Guillermo del Toro is well known for taking on movies with pretty dark subject matter, and while
Hellboy and its sequel may have been based on comic books, they were really more like monster movies than your typical superhero adaptation.
Years ago, we learned that the filmmaker was working on
Justice League Dark, but the DC Comics adaptation never became a reality. Now, Del Toro has revealed what it was about
Justice League Dark (or
Dark Universe as it was once called) that made him want to dip his toes into the world of superhero movies.
"Well, I co-wrote a whole screenplay on Justice League Dark for Warner Bros., so that's your answer," he said when asked if he would like to work on another comic book adaptation somewhere down the line. "I love Deadman, I love Demon, I love Swamp Thing. Zatanna. That's a universe, is one thing. I'm very attracted to that side of the DC Universe."
"But I'm not a superhero guy," he continued. "For me to like a superhero, the superhero needs to be a monster. I'm not into those things, I've never been. I'm always in favor of monster narratives. That's what I like. Or, I love noir. I love police, crime dramas. I love science fiction."
Unfortunately, unless Warner Bros. changes its mind about Justice League Dark, it seems as if Del Toro is never going to tackle a superhero movie, which is a real shame. There are plenty of monsters in both the Marvel and DC Universes, of course, so who knows if he'll be tempted somewhere down the line.
