ZATANNA Movie Also Scrapped At HBO Max; J.J. Abrams Trying To Find A Home For That And CONSTANTINE

We've already heard that Warner Bros. has pulled the plug on HBO Max's Constantine, but it sounds like Zatanna can now join the Hellblazer on the scrap pile. Find more details on that after the jump...

It's become apparent that some big changes are currently taking place at Warner Bros., and that's proving to be good and bad news for the DC Extended Universe. While all signs point to Henry Cavill returning as Superman, for example, there are a number of exciting projects that now look set to fall by the wayside.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Emerald Fennell's Zatanna movie is among them.

That had been in the works for HBO Max, though the second Batgirl was cancelled (due to the new Warner Bros. Discovery regime wanting to move away from movies produced for streaming), we did wonder if this might be the case.

J.J. Abrams was producing that and the Constantine project starring Ṣọpẹ Dìrísù with an eye to build to a Justice League Dark crossover. Apparently, the prolific filmmaker is looking to shop those to other streamers, so HBO Max clearly has no place for them at this point in time.

Whether another streaming platform will want them remains to be seen, but these are two high-profile DC Comics adaptations that can likely be added to the list of those to never happen.

The trade notes that the hunt for the DCEU's own Kevin Feige has been an "utter failure," with current executive Michael De Luca now the likeliest candidate to take charge of what comes next. He and Pamela Adby are said to be keen to get a number of movies and TV shows in development, taking what sounds like a "throw it at the wall and see what sticks" approach.

Alas, Zatanna won't be among them.

The character has been portrayed on screen before, but not in her own movie. However, now that Constantine 2 is in the works with Keanu Reeves reprising the role, perhaps a new version of the hero could be introduced there instead.

What do you guys think?

One of my top fave characters ever. I want a Zatanna movie so bad.

@Arrows - I get it but I also can’t see the GA clamoring for this. It doesn’t mean it couldn’t be done but still.

If ain't Batman,Superman or Wonder Woman then there is a good chance it will be scrapped.

@marvel72 - And those are not safe either, unless their movies have a small budget.

@TheHumanSpider2 - Batman is safe has houses.
The other two yeah are debatable.

@marvel72 - The only three DC movies that are safe are The Batman 2, Joker 2, and Constantine 2...what do these movies have in common? they are sequels to succesfull movies, and more importantly, they are cheap.
Because I dont think Discovery is giving Matt Reeves another $185M for the sequel...
"keep them cheap" seems to be the first (and probably only) rule under Discovery.

I got some thoughts on what’s about to happen with WB / DC movies, especially Superman, based on Zaslav’s goal for WB but a certain side of this website will be feeling like hit dogs hollering

@DCasAhobby - my first question what do you know about zaslav’s plans for Wb that he’s already started on with CNN?

@ShimmyShimmyYA -

I doubt we'll see a Superman movie before WBD is sold. They can say anything they want right now, but once WB is sold again, it ain't their problem. Universal doesn't have to honor any contract with anyone.

@ShimmyShimmyYA - He's reducing the stock and value of WB for an easy sell.

@Battabingg - not where I was going with that but I can def see them trying to sell it off very very soon

WB has been wayyyyy too far down in the dumps for me to complain about them crawling back to the Trinity (and the Rock) again after all this time, but it's crazy that the post JL years they spent aimlessly developing characters that weren't in Justice League limbo has produced almost zero films about none Justice League members, including a Batgirl movie they actually managed to fully shoot

I mean did anyone think Zatanna was really going to happen…
The1st
The1st - 10/18/2022, 3:07 PM
@GhostDog - Nope. My only question now is did JJ take so long because of WB, or did JJ just do the usual JJ move and essentially take the money and run.

@GhostDog - For real. Have to be a pretty hardcore fan to be asking for a Zatanna movie. Always disliked the cheesy slutty magician look she had/has in the comics. Can't imagine a whole movie about her being very successful with the GA regardless of what she is wearing though.

WB is completely becoming like Sony pictures
DCasAhobby
DCasAhobby - 10/18/2022, 2:53 PM
@Blergh - far worse actully. But literally in the sense of wanting to make a whole run of Batman villian movies without Batman(Sonyverse)

WB has proved to be completely lost...still

The thing about a "Throw shit at the wall and see what sticks" approach is that shit sticks to the wall.

@Reeds2Much - I've heard rumblings from my contacts in the industry (i.e. "Mr. Sock Puppet" and "Mr. Sock Puppet with a Mustache") that WBD is eyeing Ezra Miller as their new "Kevin Feige" because they like his "spunk" and "go-get-her" attitude. Wow, that got kinda gross pretty quickly.

Just a few weeks ago

DC/WB was looking for their very own Kevin Feige

Now everybody gets to do what they want

Gunn, The Rock, JJ Abrams , Matt Reeves AND Ezra Miller

Battabingg
Battabingg - 10/18/2022, 3:39 PM
@WakandaTech - There was never a 10-year plan. Don't believe a thing Zaslav says. He can't even get anybody to replace Hamada at DC.
WakandaTech
WakandaTech - 10/18/2022, 3:50 PM
@Battabingg -

That was the plan

They just figured a few weeks later that it would not work

so they turned to the Rock and said fvk it let everyone due what they want
