Why A DC Cinematic Universe Could Be Epic

Why A DC Cinematic Universe Could Be Epic

With the notion that DC has several film and TV properties, I propose an idea that could be awesome if DC went for it.

Recently, during the San Deigo Comic-Con it was announced that there would be a Superman/Batman film in 2015. I was one of the many people who were super excited about this. This meant that we are one step closer to a Justice League film. Many people thought it was a cheap marketing ploy and done solely based on monetary reasons, and while money does play a large factor in it, I think that it could work on its own level creatively.

The DC Universe is vast and epic. It contains several characters that have their own unique worldview, powers and skill sets. Superman and Batman were the first two in the universe, and it would only make sense to team them up. I was actually more excited for this news than I was for Avengers: Age of Ultron…But that is a story I won’t get into to. The main reason is because Marvel, while they have had amazing films in the past, have played all their cards by now. Yes, they have Ant-Man and Guardians of the Galaxy, but they had their team-up film and right now are not doing new that we haven’t seen so far in film. What DC is doing however, is something completely new. We have a superhero film. While not as big or spectacular as a team film, a “Team Up” film between two characters could prove to be the freshness we need in superhero cinema. Marvel has yet to throw two of their biggest heroes into one movie. And we all know how awesome a Science Bros movie would be (Iron Man/Hulk). Batman/Superman will help establish the Batman character in a world where aliens exist. We will get the Batman we all know at love that has rogues ranging from Clayface to Poison Ivy. We will also get a level of seriousness too it being in the same universe as Man of Steel. It could also be a quick Batman origin flick, showing quick flashes of his past and boom, right into the story.

Another reason this will work is because rebooting will be super simple with DC characters. Especially since most of them are Legacy heroes. You can have 3 Flash films with Barry Allen, kill him off in a big Justice League flick, and then easily reboot the franchise with Wally as the Flash. Then you can reboot that with Bart as the Flash. Same goes with Green Lantern. Hell, you could keep the Green Lantern movie in continuity (it would suck, but it would help). Just say Hal is off Earth fighting somewhere and they need another Lantern to take his place. Get John Stewart and bam, you have a new one. Then reboot with other Lanterns. It would take away the stigma of the reboot and would also allow for quicker reboots without repeating origins and getting complaints from too quick a reboot time. I will get back to reboot ideas later.

Then we have television shows. It was recently announced that Barry Allen would be a recurring character on Arrow for a few episodes and that would spin off into his own show as “The Flash.” We also know that Princess Diana of Themyscira (Wonder Woman) is getting her own show on the CW as well. This could possibly mean a DC Television Universe. TV shows that all happen in the same universe. It's brilliant. It also opens the door to something bigger in the Cinematic universe. There have been rumors that Flash is getting his own movie soon. I heard about that and then the TV show. Then I asked myself, why are we getting both? Will they be in the same universe? That is when it hit me… DC Multiverse. The multiverse has been a consistent factor in the history of DC. So, I thought why not include it? This is what could set it apart from Marvel. The TV shows are one Earth, and the movies are another Earth. Similar things happen on these Earths, but differently. Then we have the possibility of doing a Crisis on Infinite Earths film. This is where the fun really begins.

You would not HAVE to watch both the movies and the TV show, but only be aware that there are multiple Earths with similar characters. In fact the year the movie would come out you could have several of the TV shows such as Arrow, Flash and Amazon feel the effects of the film and then have the TV actors cameo in the film. That is when you reboot the cinematic universe. It would be a really ballsy movie and I would only suggest it after a phase 3. Do a final Justice League film and then boom, a few years later Crisis on Infinite Earths happens. The end of this will reboot the universe in order to save them all and bam, you have an in story reason for reboot the series. It could be controversial but it would be the perfect thing to keep the universe fresh. And it would undoubtedly put DC streets ahead of Marvel in terms of film story telling, especially if they make good films.

Why not? Isn't that what happened in the comics? Barry's my favorite flash, but I think that's supposed to happen.

This isn't a why statement really. A DC Cinematic Universe could be epic. You don't need to explain why and how. You get me?

Ummm.....Amazon TV show has been put on hold, probably permanently. This multiverse idea is stupid, I bet they combine the universes into one (just mention on Arrow about what happened in Metropolis.) As for using different alter egos, general audiences would not understand that.

What I got out of this: DC universe can be awesome because its a comic book movie. Marvel has the balls to use somebody other than their main heroes. DC has TV shows.

The multiverse thing was already debuncked long ago. Wonder women is not getting her own TV show don't know were you made that up. Flash TV show is a rumor, its only a fact that he's going to be on Arrow. Flash movie has been rumored for about 56 years. What is wrong with these DC fans, First some guy said there was a gothom PD show, now a wonder women? By the way, technically marvel already has 3 universes, X-men, Avengers, Spider-man.

DC will be an awesome universe, heck they are DC. But this editorial pretty much was old news. Right now what sets DC apart is the fact that they own their stuff. What they need to do is start actually making movies. Why marvel is beating DC. 2 movies a year VS 2 movie in 3 years. If marvel ties in X-men, Spiderman and Avengers, DC is screwed because they would be so far behind, with less commitment to making the movies. By the time they make their first GL movie marvel will be 1 year away from their 3rd. By the time they finish their justice league series marvel will be on their 6th avengers movie... Or the comic book movie love will have died out. and 1 Avengers show is far from all the cards. A new TV show, hopefully some darker movies, and about 10 new characters on watch for movies.

As a DC fan the only thing that could have helped DC catch up to Marvel would have been to incorporate the dark knight trilogy into next Man of Steel movie. That would have given them 5 movies in their "universe" as opposed to just two. It will go down as the dumbest move in CBM history and quite frankly will cost WB hundreds of millions of dollars. This current talk about an "old Batman" makes a bad situation worse. Because that means that the Justice League movie would either feature an old Batman or YET ANOTHER rebooted one. Whoever is making decisions at WB/DC is a complete idiot. He/She is squandering the opportunity for the MOST epic films ever. The best thing I think of for DC is for Warner Brothers to sell it to a studio that can make common sense decisions like keeping intact their most successful DC films. To continuously be embarrassed by Marvel because they think fans are going to go along with these stupid decisions. It is just beyond dumb!

Exactly Forthas. Disney should just buy them up along with the rest of the Marvel universe. Think about it, Have a DC movieverse AND a Marvel universe... Plus eventually we could see a DC vs Marvel movie. how awesome would that be? Give DC their own studio at Disney and wammo they are in business.

They will reboot everything. Superman is the start of the universe. The only other MAYBE is Arrow being tied in.

The problem I have with keeping the Dark Knight Trilogy in continuity is the fact that it makes no logical sense to do it. Batman retired. It is also set in a world with no Super Powers. We also have the fact that Superman could have swooped in during the Gotham Crisis in TDKR especially if we are to assume that Chronologically TDKR takes place in 2016 and that Man of Steel Occurs in 2012 or 2013. Also, It would be stupid because we would have a Batman gargling his words all time to the justice league in that movie. Even though they will know who he is. Making it multiversal Gives the Universe so much more potential than just copying what Marvel is doing. But i guess Marvel fans love playing it safe. We can see that from most of the Marvel movies that have come out. Good guys win, bad guys lose, no one important dies. BORING. I love the Marvel movies but the DCCU is going to take time, and instead of trying make something old fit something new it is far easier to plan out something. People are so goddamn impatient when it comes to these sort of things and wrtie DC/WB off as not knowing what they are doing. At least they are taking sometime to figure out what they want to do instead of cramming so many superhero films down our throat every year. I would rather have movies tht take a little more time to come out that have higher quality then several films come out that have lower quality.
