Let's get to the basics.

Kick Ass stars Aaron Johnson as the films title star Kick Ass. Chloe Moretz Stars as the films true superhero Hit Girl aka Mindy Macready. Christopher Mintz (McLovin) Plasse as the films Costumed villain and mob son, Chris D'Amico aka the Red Mist. Mark Strong stars as the Red Mist's old man and mob boss, Frank D'Amico. And who can forget Nicholas Cage as Damon Macready, Hit Girls mentor and Big Daddy. Mark Miller wrote, and produced, while Matthew Vaughn directed this movie.

I loved this movie right from the start. The opening scene of the guy jumping from the roof top trying out the capabilities of his new flying suit, only to find out the ultimate reason why normal people DO NOT become super heroes, was great. The only thing Fly boy achieved was totaling some suckers car as he dived face first into it from 100 or so stories above. It was great foreshadowing for the entire movie.

Aaron Johnson showed us Kick Ass. Aaron captured the Human side of being just a normal nobody and he would keep turning in Movie Moment after Movie Moment throughout Kick Ass. Aaron really did a great job with the title character and he answered the films question of choice: To be a Super Hero or not to be a Super Hero and why. The way Mark Miller and John S. Romita wrote Kick Ass as a character was brilliant! Kick Ass's Mom died not from a nuclear explosion or fried on a dying planet but from a Brain Aneurysm while eating breakfast. This type of thing happens in normal every day life, opening up the possibility for a lot more fans to relate to the film now on a more personable level. The best part about Kick Ass was that he wasn’t trained in martial arts on top of a mountain for 4 years or lost his parents to a crazed lunatic in a back alley. Kick Ass was just a normal guy who said enough. He wanted to stick up for the greater good and become a super hero despite not having Superman's powers or Batman's money.

I enjoyed Chloe Moretz and Nicolas Cage as Hit Girl and Big Daddy the most out of Kick Ass. I actually like Nicolas Cage as Big Daddy more then I liked Nicolas Cage as Johnny Blaze in Ghost Rider. Nic made Big Daddy have a lot more depth in his character then the entire Ghost Rider movie. I thought it was great that Big Daddy was modeled after Adam West's Batman, however, the same campiness could not be said for Hit Girl (no Robin comparisons here, in fact Hit Girl would have beat the sh#$ out of the 60's Robin, um with ease). 11 year old Chloe Moretz turned in what people in the movie business call an Unforgettable Performance. Meaning whatever role she takes in the future she will ALWAYS be remembered first as Hit Girl. Compare this statement to what Claudia did for Kirsten Dunst. I said Hit Girl was the films true super hero purely from the standpoint of that she was trained all her life by Big Daddy to do just that, be a super hero. On top of that Hit Girl was simply bad ass and ruthless. Her first scene as Hit Girl left you wanting more and Mark Miller did not disappoint.

I like how the film developed McLovin into the villain that he would eventually become. It was not cheesy. There was no automatic reason why The Red Mist became The Red Mist. No vat of chemicals no Red Meteor Rock (Gay) no one stop over the top reason at all. Red Mist was simply the son of a mob boss that was trying to help out in dear old dads business when he saw an opportunity to step up and he took it. I thought Mark Strong did a good job as the Red Mist's father and Kick Ass's main adversary. But I also felt like anybody from The Sopranos could have played that role as well. As I said up above, Spoilers but I won't delve too deeply into this only saying that these two set the sequel up beautifully.

Mark Miller and Matthew Vaughn are now the Dynamic Duo of Super Hero movies. I almost wish Joss Whedon would take a step aside and let these two handle The Avengers. No, after seeing Kick Ass, I demand it!!! Hey, at least they have a shot over at DC/Warner, no one has been charged with the feat of getting us a Justice League movie yet. I say let Mark Miller and Matthew Vaughn take on the project with Nolan Godfathering it. Kick Ass is a good example of what these two guys can do with a team ensemble flick and MAKE IT GOOD.

Every kid who ever read a comic book wanted to be a super hero in some form or capacity. That’s the beauty of this movie; Kick Ass gives us realistic reasons why normal people do not become super heroes. Kick Ass also shows us the consequences that can happen when a handful of people do get Froggy and start screwing around in costumes clipping people or just kicking their ass.

The only downside to Kick Ass was the money it generated. $19.75 Million is a joke. How to train you’re Dragon, which has been out for 4 weeks, made more at $20 million this weekend. Hey ComicBookMovie fans, where were you? How come you didn’t show up to this movie in droves? Kick Ass was made for you. This was an Adult oriented movie (meaning this movie was made for the Comic Book readers that have grown up) that had kids Kicking Ass, foul mouths and a solid story. If you ever wonder why major tent pole movie blockbusters don’t care about the fan boy community or what you have to say it's because you don’t pay to go see the movies you demand! You bitch and moan when a director doesn't put in the fan nods you want but more then likely you don’t go see the movie anyway, you download it or you arm chair critique it.

Kick Ass to me is NOW the movie of the year. I am making that statement so Gtrman can sleep better at night now. It had a better plot then Clash of the Titans, the story flowed better then 'The Wolfman' and had way more substance then Percy. So Kick Ass is the movie of the year SO FAR. I want to clarify so Gtrman doesn't go into other threads and miss quote me AGAIN. Movie of the year SO FAR! That is until Iron Man 2 comes out in a few weeks. That's 2010's Comic Book Movie money shot.

Now that the review is officially in the books I want to introduce you all to a new way for me to gauge movies. Gtrman has called me out. Which is fine. When you’re filming a movie review you don’t have time to express or get everything on tape that you might want to. Especially if John is going on or spinning off in a different direction then what was first intended. I'm sure Gtrman has never attempted this but somehow he knows all about it. So to improve and make our future movie reviews better and more informative I am incorporating Jman's Movie Meter:) Jman's Movie Meter is as long as the movie is good. It includes Marks on how good the:

Plot
Special Effects
Acting
Screen Play
Directing
Originality
Source Material
& Movie Moments

are! For instance, Kick Ass had an excellent Plot, no Special Effects really to speak off, the Acting was memorable by Hit Girl and Kick Ass, the Screen Play solid, the Directing remarkable, and the Originality was obviously there as we have never seen a movie like this before. I did not give this movie a mark for Source Material because I have never read the comic book. My bad but I wanted a fresh take on Kick Ass. That's what I got. (Relax Comic Book faithfuls; Casey at BuymeToys.com has already added this to my pull list file).

I also note note worthy movie moments.

Movie Moments are like when Hit Girl put that bladed staff right through the heart of that goon in her opening scene as Hit Girl. That’s a movie moment. Or when Kick Ass first appears on screen to face those jack holes trying to boost a car and gets stabbed. That's a movie moment. Or when Jack Nicholson looks at the camera and says 'Wait till they get a load of me'! That’s a movie moment. In this case it was the Red Mist at the end of the movie who earned that Movie Moment. Jman's Movie Meter came in at the mark of 13 for Kick Ass. Gtrman, just so you know Clash earned a Jman Movie Meter of only 5. I gave it 2 marks for Special Effects, 1 mark for the Director, it did not earn any other marks in other categories except for a couple Movie Moments.

We all want to improve whatever it is we do Dailey, or at least you should. So I want to take this opportunity to thank Gtrman for helping me improve as a critic. Jman's Movie Meter will reflect why Jman and Johnny Love say the movie is cool or why it is poo! The higher the mark, the better the movie!

So Gtrman, don’t take offense to this you helped me improve so a big shout out and thank you goes to the bald guy looking in your bedroom window. Thanks Bro!

Hopefully there will be a sequel! I want more KICKASS!

Great Review, finally someone who seems to actually like the movies they review! lol, kind of refreshing! I absolutely loved this movie and can't wait for Kick-Ass 2! You can tell from interviews and how she handled this movie that Chloe Morentz is going to be a force in the movie business for years to come and the other new faces were great too. It was hard not to like Aaron Johnson as Kick-Ass, he was so believable in that role and his buddies were hilarious too. Reminded me of my friends and how they would act. And Nick Cage was great as usual, I loved his adaptation of Big Daddy. He was a freakin bad ass when he took down that lumber warehouse! I am definitely going to be seeing this one again!

Great stuff Jman. I've seen it twice, and will probably go again since my semi GF wants to. Its just the nature of the beast, I don't think any CBM fans are not going to see this, its just that an R rated film is always going to make less that something the kiddies can drag their parents too is all.

Shaman, what did you think then? Not you cuppa tea?

I... like jman have already purchased the book but held out to see the movie. I took my 15 year old son and two of his freinds to the midnight preview and i compliment jmans review as it is "spot on". I have been a fanboy for more than 25 years now and I hold Millar up there with Moore and Miller. I was blowm away.

RorMachine- Hey bud! Well, i do kinda have this review thingy there in the review section thingy there LOL I just didn't want to pimp it that much on Jman's review. It's his show :)

But yeah, my opinion on a few of these details kinda differs from Jman's. Not much though but some ;)

Good Review. I really enjoyed this flick, and I'd never given the comic a full read.
But in answer to your comment concerning the lack of ticket sales, a movie like this was destined to do poorly at the box office. It's advertised as a teenage super-hero flick, but it's rated R. The R-rating means children can't see it, and the marketing puts most non-comic fan adults off as well. I saw the movie with 3 other adults (non of whom read comics), they all liked it, but they wouldn't have seen it if I hadn't been so enthusiastic.

What kinda douche bag gives this review a thumbs down? I thought the review was great and I enjoyed the hell out of this movie. I have the comic, but I was waiting to read the comic until I saw the movie so I didn't go in with preconceptions. I hope the comic book can live up to the movie.

@hescian- yeah but then you got parents like myself that want his kids to experience more out of the cinema than "Free Willie" and the "Princess and the Frog" , and to add insult to injury his freinds parents let me take their kids out on a school nite to see these movies. I love it.

Great review!

I've already seen this twice. It's easily one of my favorite movies ever.

I think this movie did so crappy because the previews kinda made it look like a spoof along the lines of Superhero Movie. The trailer didn't even come close to reflecting how good this movie was. Also, no one that didn't follow the movie online even knew that Nick Cage was in it. I was telling 3 of my friends about how good I thought the movie was and they all said "Nick Cage was in it...?"

P.S. For the record, I liked Super Hero Movie... it was hilarious...

**SPOILER ALERT**
Saw the movie last friday and loved it, it was a blast, would highly recommend it to most people. That being said, there was one aspect that was slightly dissapointing, not huge, but for me turned it from what could have been a cultural and socially meaningful movie into simply a highly entertaining one.

Bear with me, I will explain. The premise for the story rests on the "what if" of a normal everyday schlub in the real world trying to be a superhero and the consequences thereof. In the second half of the movie, they completely cop out on this message. When Kick-Ass confesses to his love, she almost immediately forgives him and they hook up. Nice nerd fantasy wish-fulfillment but one hundred percent unrealistic. Entertaining(and hot!) but at cross purposes to the stated premise at the beginning. Also the final confrontation at the bad guy's place, while hugely entertaining and awesome in so many ways, the jetpack with the gatling guns again took the movie away from the original premise of being "this is what would happen in real life".

Like I said, highly recommend the movie and it is an absolute blast, but I understand where Roger Ebert was coming from.

Just read your review Shaman, yeah, pretty much in agreement with you. I recommend the comic, it does NOT cop out in any sense on the realism concept. Other than the somewhat changed ending (in detail, tremendously changed, not much in basic concept), there are a few other differences. He doesn't get the girl, she considers him a total perv and jackass after the confession and it's revealed at the end that Big Daddy was actually just an accountant(the ex cop story does get trotted out earlier) and Mindy goes back to live with her mom, not "Marcus". I understand it wasn't quite finished when they started making the movie, but I can still see the studio not liking or thinking they could do well with the more depressing second half. Oh yeah, and Kick-Ass gets a nice long torture session with his balls hooked up to a car battery. All kinds of fun!

Very nice Review! Very detailed and thorough! If i wasn't such a lazy bastard, I'd attempt to write a review this good myself!

And yes, Chloe will be known as Hitgirl FOR THE REST OF HER LIFE. That's just how entertaing and well done her perfomance was.

@mwmcintyre

I definitely enjoyed the comics more than the film, and if they had waited until Millar had actually finished with his comics to make the script, I think the movie would have been LOADS better.

Great movie, just not the five star film that so many reviewers make it out to be.

And HOW COULD THEY LEAVE OUT THE TUNK!!!!

I think I need to see this movie again.....was I the only one a bit disappointed?

I thought Aaron Johnson and the chick who played his girlfriend were atrocious!, and it certainly didn't help matters that he was narrarating (which i generally dislike). The movies saving grace was CHLOE MORETZ, NICK CAGE, & MARK STRONG. Whenever the story pulled away those characters, my intrest just seemed to tank. In short: Kick-Ass seemed like it would've been much more Kickass without him and his dumbass friends. Maybe you guys got me too hyped up.....IDK, i think i'm gonna go see it again.

BTW....the scence where HITGIRL comes back to save her dad was f*ckin EPIC! HID strobe attachment on the gun???? Coolest. Sh!t. Ever.

Haha. I know what Multi wants for Christmas!

Great review! I agree with basically everything you said, so, obviously I loved the movie. I do, however, have a complaint about your movie meter... you say there were no special effects in "Kick-Ass", yet you mention Hit-Girl stabbing the man through the chest with the bladed staff. Now, if you mean "spectacular visual effects", then no, there were none, but as a pseudo-special effects artist, I feel that the best effects are those that look so natural that you don't even notice they are effects.

Also, an observation. I think "Kick-Ass" has a chance to become this decade's "Goonies", and I'm almost 100% sure that the reason How To Train Your Dragon's ticket sales skyrocketted this weekend is because kids were buying the tickets to sneak into Kick-Ass.

MarkCassidy - 4/19/2010, 1:50 PM
Talontd, I wouldn't say atrocious by any stretch, but I also said in my review that he was the weak link. Still very good but out-shined by the rest of the cast, and when your the main character, thats a big drawback.
Talontd
Talontd - 4/19/2010, 2:06 PM
@ROR

Well maybe "atrocious" was a bit strong, but i really disliked his delivery, then when you combine that with the fact that he was constantly yapping in my ear (narrating), i began to dislike the MAIN character. I'm not alone in this either, EVERYONE i went with (5 people) hated that character. None of them are comic fans but all of them said same thing, if not for MORETZ, CAGE, & STRONG, the movie would have blown.

I know thats a lot of characters, but it's a weird feeling when the main character and the people surrounding him (his friends); even Clark Duke whom i normally find funny & ESPECIALLY Lyndsy Fonseca who i really thought was atrocious, are the weak part of the film. Like I said, i'm gonna go watch it again with my expectations in check. I didn't think it sucked, just that it didn't live up to the hype.

@Contrast - The only reason How to Train your dragon made more money is that 3D tickets are more expensive...

Jet packs are real.

Its H202 they last only a few seconds and are expensive. But they are real and work. Its only a matter of time before something is made that can be a better sustainable, cheaper fuel that can make these puppies last longer in the air.

@Con yes I actually watched kids buying clash of the titans tickets to get into kick ass. So sadly kick ass isnt getting the sales it deserves.
