Will Smith Recalls How Steven Spielberg Convinced Him To Make MEN IN BLACK

Following 1996's Independence Day, Will Smith didn't want to make two alien movies back-to-back. However, Steven Spielberg proved very convincing.

Will Smith was a recent guest on Kevin Hart's Hart to Heart talk show, and the two comedic action stars touched on the starting point of Smith's turn as one of the biggest blockbuster actors of the late '90s.

Smith's Independence Day was released in 1996, which was followed by Men in Black, which hit theaters in 1997. However, Smtih revealed that he initially didn't want to make Men In Black.

"I didn't want to make Men In Black- that was the next year after Independence Day. So, I didn't want to make two alien movies back-to-back.

When Kevin Hart asked him how did Steven Spielberg convince him, Will Smith replied, "Steven Spielberg sent a helicopter for me. I was in New York [at the time].  The helicopter landed at his house...He flew me in, and he said the coldest sh**."

"He said, 'Tell me why you don't want to make my movie.'... And there was the dot, dot, dot on the end. If he would have continued, he would've said, 'Joker, you know I made Jaws. Or, you know I made E.T.  I walked in his house and he had the Jaws poster, the Jurassic Park poster. He had everything, so I would know. "

It obviously all worked out for Will Smith, as Men In Black was the top-grossing movie of 1997, earning $250,690,539 million for Sony. The Lost World: Jurassic Park was the second-highest-grossing domestic film of '97, grossing $229,086,679 million for Universal Pictures.

While '97 was a good year for Will Smith, it was an even better year for Spielberg.

Men In Black was based on the 1990 Malibu Comics series by writer Lowell Cunningham and illustrator Sandy Carruthers. The comic inspired three live-action films starring Tommy Lee Jones and Smith, as well as a 2019 spinoff film that starred Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson.

Men In Black Official Synopsis: Men in Black follows the exploits of agents Kay (Tommy Lee Jones) and Jay (Will Smith), members of a top-secret organization established to monitor alien activity on Earth. The two MiB find themselves in the middle of the deadly plot by an intergalactic terrorist (Vincent D'Onofrio) who has arrived on Earth to assassinate two ambassadors from opposing galaxies.

Dammit Will, wtf happened to you? You were so cool back in the 90's. Now you're a cuckold clown.

@MaxPaint -

Internet transparency happened. It's not particularly Will's fault.

My bad. I mean, it clearly is, at least a big part of it all, but it's mostly our fault as audiences for glirfying pop culture and putting people on a pedestal, treating them as role models. Will might as well have always been this way. Thanks to the internet and its transparency, however, we now have grown to demystify a lot of things, and a lot of people.

Smith never changed. We now just know better.

@DrReedRichards - That's true, I didn't know back then when I was a kid watching him in fresh prince of bel-hair to bad boys to enemy of the state, that I was admiring a man for his acting and not for who he truly was. But still, it was sad to see how he allowed his wife to be so open about her "infidelity" with another man (I don't think she needed to be that transparent). And then the whole thing at the oscars that eclipsed what should've been a celebration for his performance as King Richard. But yeah at the end its all about expectations vs reality. And it goes for athletes and politicians as well. But it is the kind of stuff that you learn through the years I guess.

@MaxPaint - That's one of the least of his issues. Being violent is the real issue. As Jesus Christ through The Holy Bible says to turn the other cheek.

@dagenspear - God is the worst serial killer in history if you believe in the bible, and in Christian religion you are allowed to beat your wife and sell your daughters into prostitution. It also tells you to love thy neighbor, unless they are gay in which case go ahead and be a bigot. You can't pick and choose what to preach.

@MyCoolYoung - Yes, he seems so happy about it.

You really are gonna try to push a narrative now that him being cheated by his wife doesn't affect his personality or doesn't affect his job? Cause nobody is going to buy it, so just save it.

@UncleHarm1 - Completely false. God created all life, our lives are His. He is the only One who decides whether we should live or die and the only One who decides morality. You have no right to make any human judgement.

God worked through Jesus Christ in the Holy Spirit to save our souls. Believe in your heart and confess with your mouth that Jesus Christ died on the cross for your sins, and that God raised Him from the dead, repent of your sins, accept God, Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit into your heart and you will be saved.

God saved my soul, changed my heart, changed my mind, made me better, helped people through me. Not long after I got saved I prayed to God for help understanding the Holy Bible, and that same day someone knocked on my door asking me if I wanted to understand the Bible.

@JonAwesome - Spielberg was the producer and basically convinced Smith and Tommy Lee to do the film after they initially declined.

I have to admit that I’ve lost more respect for Kevin Hart.

He already whores himself to every show and product but make your bucks. That I can accept, but to give ANY audience to Will Smith after he assaulted one of your fellow comedians on stage in front of an international audience…..that’s pathetic.

Will Smith should be blacklisted permanently by all comedians.
And Hollywood revealed how disgraceful they are by giving that clown a standing ovation after that.

Yet another reason why I don’t have ANY sympathy or respect for the Hollywood cult.

@TyrantBossMedia - There's only one way you get blacklisted permanently in Hollywood.

Dave Chappelle said, “I learned that there are two words in the English language that you should never say together in sequence. And those words are ‘the’ and ‘Jews.’”

@GhostDog -

He did slap him, and then proceeded to walk off-stage with a clearly smug expression on his face. Not enough people talk about this one specific detail, and even fewer give it the attention it deserves.

@DrReedRichards - I think he has some mental issue (which I can’t entirely excuse him for because he chooses to be with a psycho) and will never understand why he won’t divorce Jada but the actual act didn’t really shake me after a while. A lot of these celebs have done far worse it just wasn’t televised.

Man y’all act like that smack was the worst thing ever. Who cares? Who cares about celebrities personal lives either. None of y’all know will or Jada personally stop trying to psychoanalyze someone from the brief 2% of their lives that you see.

Furthermore, Chris Rock has been disrespecting black women for years. Then proceeded to do a Netflix special and disrespect them again on a global scale. Fck dude. I don’t know where y’all from but where I’m from it’s simple

People can say what they want but I think people forgot words have consequences. Also, Chris rock did that special talking about white people can’t use the n word then “allowed” Louis CK to say it. Pandering ass

Anyway, cool story. I didn’t know Steven had anything to do with men in black. Also, always in forever men in black 3> the other two
