This article is the second part of my report on how CBMs have fared over the last 12 years. We begin with year 2007.

Year Rank Film Distributor/Producer Gross Earnings (M)

2007 1 Spider-man 3 Sony $336
10 300 WB $210
18 Fantastic Four:
Rise of the
Silver Surfer Fox $131
27 Ghost Rider Sony $115

2008 1 The Dark Knight WB $533
2 Iron Man Paramount $328
17 The Incredible Hulk Universal $134.8
18 Wanted Universal $134.5
42 Hellboy 2:
The Golden Army Universal $ 75

2009 1 Avatar Fox $749
7 Star Trek Paramount $257
13 X-men Origins:
Wolverine Fox $179
18 G.I. Joe:
The Rise of Cobra Paramount $154
31 Watchmen WB $104

2010 1 Toy Story 3 Buena Vista $415
2 Alice in Wonderland Buena Vista $334
3 Iron Man 2 Paramount $312
67 Kick Ass Lion’s Gate $ 48
92 Scott Pilgrim VS.
The World Universal $ 31

2011 1 Harry Potter and the
Deathly Hallows part 2 WB $381
10 Thor Paramount $181
12 Captain America:
The First Avenger Paramount $176
17 X-men First Class Fox $146
21 Super 8 Paramount $127
24 Green Lantern WB $116
32 The Green Hornet Sony $ 98

2012 1 Marvel’s
The Avengers Buena Vista $623
2 The Dark Knight Rises WB $448
7 The Amazing Spider-man Sony $262
14 Men in Black III Sony $179
65 Ghost Rider
Spirit of Vengeance Sony $ 51

From the list it indicates that the years 2007, 2008, 2011 and 2012 are banner years for CBMs and we have years 2002, 2007, 2008 and 2012 where CBMs actually became top grosser for their respective years.

Basing also on the statistic shown, Sony Pictures Entertainment emerges as the top producer/distributor of CBM and related films, followed closely by Warner Bros. and Paramount.
Will 2013 be another banner year for CBMs? Will Sony remain the top producer this year?

Comments are most welcome. More power to all!

again why do you americans think that the domestic gross is so much more important than the worldwide gross?

its impressive that the avengers took $623,357,910 domestically but the foreign box office took $888,400,000 & the worldwide gross is an even more impressive $1,511,757,910.

My idea of putting up this article is to find out which CBM's did well over the last 12 years and if they have already taken over our movie-going public. The figures need not be world wide gross, just a sampling using domestic gross to have a general idea of the trend of the CBMs. Also, with this information, we are able to find out which movie company has produced/distributed CBM hits.

Take Sony Pictures for instance. Being the top producer/distributor of CBMs meant they have invested heavily on the genre. Quite appropriate therefore, if we find out in the news that they are suffering financially, and perhaps couldn't diversify in their other investments. Thus if the news are correct, the people as Sony would want to give up their Spider-man franchise. Warner Bros. on the other hand can diversify in the movie market, and not heavily invest in CBMs (not Green Lantern). In this year's line up they only have Man of Steel as their CBM.

An understanding of the performance of the CBMs over the years, backed up by some figures would give us an idea on whether they are worht investing these days or not (we pay to watch, right? so we invest). It can also give up-and-coming writers to take a closer look at the CBMs that did not do well and suggest improvements.

Thank you for the comments.
