CBM'rs Unite for Japan!

An article regarding the recent events in Japan...

The country has brought us comic fans in North America so many cherished characters, Manga and films. I use the images of two of Japan's most beloved characters worldwide, Astro Boy and Godzilla. Both have thrived in comics. Now just think of how many other comics and films they've given the world, and that we're grateful for. Likewise, Japan cherishes characters such as Batman and Wolverine, and both have been given the Anime treatment.

There's been a strange backlash of people saying the tragic tsunami is "karma" for Pearl Harbour or the nation's Dolphin and Whale hunting practices. Pearl Harbour was seventy years ago, and since we've made peace with Japan. They suffered through the A-Bomb, I believe we can consider that dispute settled. Japan is one of North America's greatest allies.

The Whaling practices issue is a serious one, and personally I believe Japan should refrain from practicing it, but now is not the time to discuss it. The country needs our support, and what better community than CBM to provide it? Let's show our friends across the pacific support and gratitude for all they've done for us in our comic exchanges. Our thoughts and prayers should be with Japan right now.

Edit: A few people have asked what I meant by supporting Japan; in my mind simply not falling into the trap of saying some of the stupid things I listed above, like saying it was some sort of payback, and being aware of where the crisis is going.

Here's a good visualization of the damage in contrast to day-to-day life:

Oh and pearl Harbour happened in the forties and Japan has changed since then. As for the whale hunting thing, I've heard about that but I always tune that subject out. I'm no member of PETA so I couldn't care less. You have also got to remember Japan isn't some third world country where things are terrible. Only 40 people died from this and I predict they will recover in less than two months.

IronicMan - 3/12/2011, 6:44 PM
The death toll is currently between 1,300 and 1,700. In one town they're missing nearly 10,000 people. That's not to mention all the others who have lost their homes and had to evacuate due to this crisis.

@ golden, wow I sense a little hate for Japan, or could care less in that statement.

But yeah, I heard it was really bad, and worse than the Haiti earthquake. I hope we can do our best to help them, and no other countries, have plans to kick them while they're down.

@IronicMan: Oh I must of heard the wrong data. Also why did you delete my first comment? Which you never answered, by the way, so I'm going to ask it again. How do you want us to help Japan?

@Manymade: I was going to write this in my last comment, but IronicMan would is probably going to delete my previous comment for bringing the question up again. Anyways I said I couldn't care less about the whale hunting not the situation. Whales are just animals that humans are superior to. Animals should be legal to hunt. It's not the end of the world that Japan is doing this. I was not saying I don't care for the people in Japan.

If anybody genuinely thinks that this devastation happening is 'karma' or an act of God or anything but a sad natural disaster is a [frick]ing retard. Thousands lie dead whether they were good or bad people and some are thinking up ways to justify this happening. I thought this was an article about 'helping' Japan? Not discussing why this was in, a strange way, fair to happen! Let's hope we are never in a position to experience such a tragedy

CraptainAmerica - 3/13/2011, 5:24 AM
@golden. There was thousands not 40. And it won't recover in two months sadly. As for humans being superior to whales...well, you jump in the water and take on a whale...you'd lose. Who's superior now?

So... Any suggestions on how we can help?

@Golden123
"People across a devastated swath of Japan suffered for a third day Sunday without water, electricity and proper food, as the country grappled with the enormity of a massive earthquake and tsunami that left more than 10,000 people dead in one area alone.
Japan's prime minister called the crisis the most severe challenge the nation has faced since World War II, as the grim situation worsened. Friday's disasters damaged two nuclear reactors, potentially sending one through a partial meltdown and adding radiation contamination to the fears of an unsettled public."
Try using the internet for something more than CBM and WOW. Oh and if your composed of what’s suppose to make us "superior" to other living things, we obviously have a long way to go.

Nice article dude.

Okay, so I got a major fact wrong and wasn't updated as much as I should of been. I still have't gotten my question about how were supposed to help. I don't see any donation box of some sort or suggestions.
I still don't see why people are attacking me on my "Whales are just animals that humans are superior to" comment. I don't know what is the deal with you guys, but last time I checked Humans are the ones who have built civilizations and are on the top of the food chain. We are the ones who have made guns and can play complicated games and work machinary. Whales haven't done any of that.

@ Golden, my mistake, didn't know what you were tryiing to say.

Golden123, apes can make tools, and construct hammocks in trees, Hump Back Whales use bubbles to herd schools of fish together followed by planning and execution of timed attacks with other Hump Backs.

Spend two days by yourself in a jungle...hell even your backyard woods and see if you're still on top of the food chain. You should have stopped before you got so behind because to say something as ignorant as, "We're the top of the food chain," proves you have no clue what the hell you're talking about.

Ironic Man,

Unfortunately, we dropped two nuclear bombs on Japan. And what's really sad is Japan's being a developed nation, you don't have any Hollywood do as I say not as I do-ers getting out there to help them or asking for donations.

Per Golden, what do you suggest we do?
golden123
golden123 - 3/14/2011, 6:52 PM
@marvelguy: That is exactly it. I don't know what to do and an article saying we should do something that doesn't specify on what, doesn't really help matters.

@Stumblin: Sorry didn't mean to strike a nerve. I didn't know about the strategy thing that you said whales do, but I did know about the apes capability. While those things may be impressive compared to other animals they aren't any of the things I have mentioned above (not including building civilizations because that can be loosely interpretated). I still hold my beleif that humans are the top of the food chain and it is our minds that have placed us there. and out of curiosity did you really spend two days in the jungle? if so where?
Stumblin
Stumblin - 3/15/2011, 7:12 AM
Ha! No, I never spent two days in the jungle alone, I would definitely be dead which was my point. It hits a nerve not because I'm an animal nut or anything but I know that we give many animals little to no credibility. We underestimate what they are really capable of because we don't understand, and for the largest creatures known in existence I cannot fathom why anyone would care less about a possible extinction. This same thought process that ended up killing the entire species of Tasmania Tigers and Dodos. I find it ridiculous to just ignore a species possible extinction based on naivety.

Basically, their is a shit ton we still don't know about whales. They have communities, they communicate, maybe they don't make tools because they don't need tools? I mean evaluation never gave them fingers so obviously it's not a necessity to survival. Of course not until we decide to [frick] with the natural balance.

We are not on the top of the food chain as I said. Spend a couple of days in the woods by yourself with zero tools mass produced and try to survive, you'll see that we're only on the top because technology and not because of our instincts and understanding of survival, because the average person hasn't a clue. We rely too heavily on technology which makes us weak compared to anything else. Because you can take a majority of people throw them into the wild; in the ocean, woods, desert, arctic and you'll see that the majority will die, by being eaten, poisoned, injured then eaten, etc.

Technology is not just man made, we perfected it, but we're far from perfect creatures. Take us out of the safety of our homes and we'd be pathetic, I mean a wild pig can threaten our lives, think about that...a freakin' pig.

@golden123 - So when the aliens arrive to earth, they have every right to wipe us silly humans off the map because they have better guns and technology?

I think your comment strikes a nerve with people not because we are animal lovers but more so because it seems ignorant to conservation in general. While we are "atop the food chain" we have shifted the balance and are causing species to go extinct with certain greedy practices. Similar practices which will eventually cause oil and water shortages in future years and screw future generations...just sayin.
