Comic Book Movies No More... At least in Indonesia

In Indonesia, that is, as new tax imposed on foreign movies. Click to read more...

Yes, it's nationwide panic and violent looting right now in Indonesia... well, no, not really. LOL! People just got angry at the government for what they thought was a stupid decision. Well, the latest of a series of stupid decisions, some might say.

With the reason to boost the development of the national film industry, the Indonesian government imposed new tax on foreign movies. New tax that was supposedly off the roof that the Motion Pictures Association were not willing to accommodate. They preferred to pull distribution out of the country instead. The decision took effect last Thursday, 17 February 2011, local time and the last of the remaining foreign movies will be screened in theaters next Friday, 25 February 2011.

Ironically, Indonesian filmmakers felt that this regulation was counterproductive to the development of the national film industry. They said the theaters could not live by local titles alone. They need foreign films to survive. If they went out of business, where would local titles be screened?

So, that's it. Until the Indonesian government decides to cancel this new tax regulation, or at least modify it to be more managable by the Motion Picture Association, people who live in Indonesia will not be seeing the likes of Green Lantern, Thor and Captain America.

Definitely not the brightest day. Sucks to be me. LOL!

Thanks, guys.

There's no need to promote it. Everybody's been saying, that's exactly what would happen. DVD pirating would blossom like mushrooms in the rainy season.

I don't usually download. It's not my thing. I like to pay for their hard work of giving me these great comic book movies and I like to see it in gigantic screen with awesome sound around me. And in 3D where available.

But now, what choice do I have? Guess I'll have to pick up the new habit of downloading then.

@ spock No Sharia has nothing to do with it. Indonesia is relatively secular.
This is just them trying to even the playing field (in obviously an ineffective way). We do something similar in Canada with the CRTC. It mandates that a minimum 30% of tv and radio programming on Canadian channels (Foreign ones are not affected) must be Canadian in origin.
Hopefully everyone can enjoy these movies everywhere, good luck Orehrepus!

I am in Indonesia now and it sure sucks to be here. Not only will I not be able to see the CBMs, but Hollywood movies in general. I would have wanted to see how Harry Potter 7 part 2 works out.

The government is looking for ways to increase revenues by imposing taxes, but it seemed that they are sticking their head in unusual places. Many people here don't buy that idea because of the corruption and tax scandal taking place every so often. People here don't want to pay taxes anymore because they are afraid their money will go to a cartel or a tax mafia.

I guess I have to wait for the DVD versions, which I hope don't get too censored and won't have the same tax imposed.

Happy viewing to those who can view those CBMs. (insert deepest sighs here)

Very interesting article, my sympathies to all Indonesians, let’s hope your government rectifies on time for you to see Thor otherwise you will have to invent your own superheroes pretty soon. I can’t wait to watch Captain Indonesia.

@daniellantern I only stay in Indonesia...work/business related

So now what we will be watching here are horror films of very low quality tsk tsk

And I don't think the government will change its mind, considering how stubborn they are to realize that they have corrupt officials all around them...

Indonesia is a great country ... get cought with drugs they will kill you. Commit murderous acts of terrorism they let you go. Have a home made sex tape stolen from your house they lock YOU away. Sorry just wanted to point out how corrupt the political and legal system is over there. On the up side most of the Indonesians ive met a pretty cool :P

@orehrepus, Thanks for bringing this up, bro. Now at least the world knows that we, the Indonesian moviegoers, especially CBM fans are grieving. I've been waiting for a live action Green Lantern movie since I was a kid and I think I might even go out of the country just to see it (been thinking of S'pore or KL). Let's just hope and pray that the government could change their mind. I just can't get it over my mind. Those people in the government, how can they be so... evil...

Thank you, all, for the sympathy and good wishes for us, Indonesians, and people like Mok, who happen to live in Indonesia.

I, too, hope the government will change its mind. Theater is not just watching movies, it's an experience. DVD and TV screen is just not the same thing.

And for your information, I and fellow Indonesians like daniellantern, mbembet and PieFace, we do not take offense of whatever bad things you guys said about our governement. Simply because it's FREAKING TRUE!

@Ghola: LOL! You know my country well, dude!
@Oscuro: Everyone but you, apparently.
