One of the many complaints I hear people say on this site is that some CBMs are not especially faithful to the source material, Im here to tell you why that’s an idiotic complaint.

Faithfulness to the source material is a complaint I hear often from comic book fans. Many of them complain that CBMs in particular fail to capture the magic of the classics or are just changing things for no good reason. Now this is true in some cases and on that I do agree. But, comic books by their very nature are about establishing a character, and as the years go by, experience different takes and/or version of that character. Some are good, some are bad but mostly it’s all just based on opinion and personnel preference.

This way of writing is what has allowed comic book characters to remain fresh and to evolve as the years have gone by. It has also allowed for some truly spectacular stories to be done with characters like Batman, Superman, Iron Man, Thor, Justice League, Avengers and so on.
However I have to ask why is it so hard to accept this for comic book based movies?

The way I see CBMs is that they are alternate universes from the comic books, hell the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been officially designated in the Marvel Multiverse as Earth-199999, so it technically exists in the comics as well. But what I don’t understand is why is it so hard for many so called fans to accept it when CBMs and the creative teams behind them do their take on a character when they can (usually) accept it in comic books?

For example let’s take the Fox version of X-Men, it’s still the same characters you know from the comics, it’s just the Bryan Singer take on them and it’s an alternate universe so why can’t you just accept that certain things are different? So they don’t have the colorful, flashy costumes from the comics and have black suits, so?

Just because those bright, flashy costumes can work in comic books does NOT mean they can work in live action. Wolverine’s costume, in my opinion, would look stupid as hell in live action. They tried to do Captain Americas default suit in the comics and I burst out laughing because I couldn’t believe that anyone in their right mind would wear that, let alone want a guy who dresses like that to be your team leader. But in the comic books I can accept this.

Do you guys really want to see a midget in yellow spandex, with a big black spiky mask, blue shoes, gloves with metal claws sticking out of his hands, a cigar in his mouth and a bad attitude who says bub all the time? I don’t, it would look absolutely horrible, and does that mean we can’t have the X-Force costume as the default one? Of course not, does it mean we HAVE to have it? Not really.

But where this really bothers me is with Spider-Man, people often complain about the new version of the character in the Webbverse. Now I know people are already typing Z0GM U LI3K AN DRU GARPHAIL?!?!? U R T3H SPUPIDAST P3RS0N 3VAR ADN U N33D 2 KILL UR S3LF LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL. Well like I said, this is just my [frick]ing opinion and im not passing it off as fact. That’s the point of a goddamn editorial, a person’s opinion on something, you don’t like it? Then leave and read something else, no ones forcing you to be here but I digress.

People often say they want a 100% faithful adaptation of Spider-Man, heres the problem with that, which take do you want to be done 100% faithfully? Do you want the Todd McFarlane Spider-Man? The JMS version? The original Stan Lee version? The Dan Slott version? See heres where this whole complaint makes no sense, every character has hundreds if not thousands of different takes and versions. Just classifying all of the runs from writers I listed above as 616 Spider-Man does NOT work. While they follow the principles setup by Stan Lee in the early days, all of them are different and have their own voice and take on the character.

So it’s impossible to try and be faithful to all of these different takes in one series, hell you can make a million Spider-Man reboots and base them off of every different run on the character. Ultimate Spider-Man is a bit different, it’s been mostly written by one guy for most of its existence and it can be pulled off 100% faithfully, 616 Spidey can not because of all the different runs and versions of the character.

And this is what I don’t get, every CBM is like a new writer coming on to a character and doing his AU or take on that character. The best ones manage to find their own voice for that character while drawing inspiration from other runs and adding them into to enhance their own, why is this so hard for people to accept for CBMs?

You want a 100% faithful to the classics Spider-Man movie? Alright then, that means its going to be a 60s period piece where everyone sounds the same because it’s the Silver age and everyone is an archetype, there are no real characters and every piece of dialogue will be lifted straight from the comic.

I would love it if some one actually did this just too see how well it would be done just so I can see it crash, burn and kill off this idiotic complaint along with it. On a side note, if you don’t like what a company is doing to a hero on the big screen and you dislike it that’s fine. But then don’t go around passing off your opinion as a fact, an opinion is not a fact, you know what is? 2+2=4, that is an undisputable fact of life, an opinion is NOT!

Hell even this editorial is not a fact, this is just me voicing my opinion on this IT R NT0 FAITH FULL 2 DA C0MICZ complaint I keep seeing everywhere and me voicing my frustration with the whole thing. If you agree with me that’s fine, if you don’t that’s fine too, in both cases convey your opinion in a proper manner instead of coming off as an asshole and attacking others for thinking differently than you. Because you are the center of the whole [frick]ing universe and everyone who does not follow the same beliefs as you is sub human (sarcasm).

Seeing as how some people on this site get those opinions across they deserve to be called out on it.

you can deviate from source materaial to enhance the story and as long as it doesnt make the character unrecognisable. Good deviations are the xmen movies with the costumes to something believable rather than the silly comic book outfits, bad deviation is Mandarin in Iron man 3

I still say the mandarin twist was not that bad. It made sense in the context of the iron man trilogy. The actual mandarin would have been completely out of left field. Im 1, tech hero, tech villain... Im 2, tech hero, tech villain... Im 3, tech hero, 10 magic rings??? Or even 10 alien tech rings... Would have really made for a better movie, hell no!

And who knew the mandaring had SO many fansbefore this contraversey...

@MoonDoggyX

Technically the twist does indeed work, the Mandarin has been done differently in every appearance and thus he has no status quo per say. But still I thought the whole terrorist angle was much better than making him some pretty boy whose whole motivation was that Tony was a dick to him once.

HISHE said it perfectly when they described him as Syndrome from Incredibles.

I completely agree with this editorial. The exception of The Last Stand and X-Men Origins, I love the X-Men movies. I really enjoyed Iron Man 3 and I thought their interpretation of the character is what's best for The Mandarin in making it work so it never came across goofy or anything. People on this site just bitch too much.

I hate that they constantly kill the bad guys at the end of CBMs these days, how can you setup a rogues gallery if the rogues are all dead 4 or 5 movies in?

Now that you mention it yeah Tony is going to fall into a coma once he sees Thanos and the rest of the cosmic guys coming lol.

Yeah I like that Webb wont be offing bad guys in his Spider-Man take, especially with the Sinister Six rumor. Once Raimin announced that he wanted to them I just kept wondering why he decided to kill off everyone but Sandman if that was his plan all along.

Anyone a fan of The Mask? I am. Love that movie. But has anyone ever read the Mask comics? So I'm alone in that eh? The Mask in the comics and film are completely different. The Mask in the comics were extremely violent and a lot of dark horror. Imagine if you combine Joker, Zsasz, Loki, and Carnage into one character. Very, very violent.

The director of The Mask is no stranger to horror. He after all directed the best Nightmare On Elm Street in NOES3. So he can make The Mask work, he decided to make it less violent and horror and more comedical. In the end it worked. The Mask turned out great.

My point is its alright to change source material if your goal is to better the movie and the character.

@LEVITIKUZ

I read the comics as well and I thought the movie made it clear that its not an adaptation of the comic, its a comedy that happens to use it. Although a Mask comic book style movie would be scary as shit.

@ekrolo - that may have been one of the funniest HISHE yet! You are definitely right about killian. They also should've done more to show that he was involved with the 10 rings since iron man 1. I just think that the absence of the magic rings didn't make a difference...

Vulture is going to need a bit of a redesign but I think the Spectacular Spider-Man version can be done in live action and work well.

Faithfulness is MUCH MORE than adapting the aesthetic.
As far as that is concerned, the concentration needs to be on the ATMOSPHERE, rather than overall appearance of a character or characters.

Much as I love the X-Men movies, Mystique (particularly in First Class) was so far away from the Mystique of the comics that you could really only accept her if you decided that Jennifer Lawrence's Raven was just another identity she assumed. It's not about how she looks - ESPECIALLY with a shapeshifter, but the presence she commands - the essence of the character. FC's Mystique is like that cute girl you've known for years in high school whose just decided to try out a new group of friends. Whereas the comics have her as a cold-hearted bitch who always has an agenda, won't hesitate to literally stab you in the back, and is inherently evil.

Matthew Vaughn wanted to put the three, Charles, Raven, and Erik together as being roughly the same age - so their origin story would have them as growing characters who shouldn't really resemble their comic book counterparts AS THEY ARE DEFINED until perhaps the end, if that even. With that in mind, and knowing that it's going to be different, I was able to thoroughly enjoy the movie twice in the theater.

---

The Dark Knight Rises does something else that quite a few (like me) find pretty much unforgivable, no matter the direction Nolan chose in Batman Begins. It's the finale, the close of the trilogy. Batman should already be an established character.... but he's not. Nolan made Gotham into a city without organized crime, so Batman wasn't needed. In short, the director tried too hard to set up a retirement plan for Batman - and this character who never gives up (in continuity) spends the entire trilogy trying to quit. It doesn't make the character more relateable, instead, it just annoys fans and makes people wonder why the movie was even necessary in the first place. My biggest issue was that it was a waste, not an exploration of the character, not even a true exploration of Knightfall, but laziness.

But anyway, I'll agree that it's something of a coin-toss.

@tainted - so, how exactly do you feel Darl Knight Rises??? Lol... I personally loved it. Just like Iron Man 3 i kis tried to enjou it for what it was. Just anoter version of the character.

Take superman for example. Even in the comics, theres how many versions are there...? There's new 52 supes, There's the one that becomes Golden Superman Prime... The one that gets Sun poisoning in All Star Superman... The one that ends up secluded because Lois dies then hooks up with Wonder Woman in Kingdom Come... So on and so on. And i'm able to enjoy them all. All of these

Look at Watchmen... Incredibly faithful compaired to most other cbm's, but didn't work well as a movie. Whick one is more important???

I hated TDKR, loved Watchmen.... both for almost completely different reasons.

TDKR wasn't Batman... Talia was so far away from the one who calls Bruce "Beloved", her motivation was also stupid and even five years too soon to be closing a trilogy with misguided revenge that the audience doesn't really care about (Green Goblin....); Selina was forced in there with the expectation ALSO forced upon the audience that we would like her because people underestimate her, but really, she's just meh. The rest of the supporting cast is just bland and dull, even John Blake is just boring, completely lacking personality. I liked Bane though.

I just wish it was a mixture of Hush and Knightfall.

Watchmen was art. Not perfection, but the scenes they got right - they were masterful. One of my favorites is below...

@drdoom - i saw the movie before i read the graphic novel. Ozymandias was in the movie for like 5 minutes and the the end comes, and he's the bad guy like we're supposed to care when the movie focused on comedian, ror and manhattan 90% of the time. Great visuals but the story lacked proper structure like the rest of snyder's work.

I get what they were trying to do and say with the movie but for the uninitiated it didn't quite work.

MoonDoggyX - 6/9/2013, 6:30 PM
@tainted - i agree with u about watchmen. It had some GREAT scenes. But what its was all said and done, it did not work as a film. As a whole. Structurally. It was like this happenes, and this, this, this ,this, he's the bad guy by the way, the end... Yes it had great scenes, but so did X3, but no one sings its praises...

My favorite scene in Watchmen is Rorschach's death. He's my favorite character and Jackie nailed that scene. The thing I love about it is while comic book deaths are meaningless nowadays, Rorschach'sdeath actually means something. This guy will never come back from the dead. There will never be a sequel. He's gone for good. Don't see that in comics that much.

Loved Snyder include Nite Owl in it. In the comics no where was there watching Ror and Manhattan go at it and the Doc kill him. In the film Nite Owl was there and in a way it showed that someone actually gave a [frick] about Rorschach. Great scene.

If they can make if work, go ahead. I loved both the Mask movie and the comics, too. However, I would love to see a Mask film that is more like the comics. That being said, I also wish they would make the Mask 2 with Jim Carrey.

I completely agree with your article. My favorite example is organic web shooters versus mechanical web shooters in the Spiderman movies. I know I'm going to get crucified for this but personally I find the organic web shooters from the Rami films work much better on screen. I know that people say it down plays Peters intellect as well as deviating from the source material. Honestly it just works much better. Besides I always thought that web spinning should have been included in Spider-Man's super powers. I'm ok with changes in the source material as long as its an improvement over the source material or if something just doesn't work on the big screen.
