Why no love for TV series?

There have been many quality comic based TV series, so why a push for films only?

I do not understand why the push to ONLY make films based on comic book characters. I mean, if you want multiple stories, and at a faster rate, TV series is the way to go. True, TV does not usually get the budget that film does and therefore does not come off with the best effects, but that does not make it impossible to deliver a solid story that is aesthetically pleasing. Take AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D. for example. The shows are pretty good storylines, and the effects are excellent. They do not need to be all effects, as ARROW proves. ARROW is one of the best shows currently on TV and the effects when needed are spectacular. Granted, the leveling of the Glades was quite obviously CGI, but even big budget films are obvious CGI when you watch them.

Now, I know there has been a huge uproar for a WONDER WOMAN film and she is my favorite character and I would love to see her given her due. However, I also would love to see a bunch of stories quickly, which TV can provide. I would like to see a return to the ways of old, when you did not have to watch each episode as it built upon itself and episodes stood alone. By the same token, I very much enjoy the continuity and storylines that build in a series, as if you are truly following along with the character. Either way they would like to do Wonder Woman would be fine with me, as long as they make her.

I will also say I do not like the reported version of AMAZON that is in planning at the CW. Following the young version of the character worked for Clark Kent, but I do not see it being interesting enough for Diana. She lives on an island of Paradise where there is no real conflict. She has to get off the island and go into the world as Wonder Woman to fight battles with the villains. A popular misconception of Wonder Woman is she has no quality villains. That is simply not true. She has tremendous foes in the Silver Swan, Circe, Cheetah, Giganta, and Villainy Inc. (the first group of villains to ever appear in DC Comics). She also has her share of mediocre villains as all heroes do. However, if you are ever stuck for an enemy to battle her, she always has the gods and goddesses to fight as well. You can't get much more powerful than actual deities.

Anyway, as much as she deserves to be on the big screen, I would be plenty happy with many stories quickly then one every 3 years. However, the best of both worlds, set a film in present day and do a TV series maybe called WONDER WOMAN ORIGINS or something setting her in World War II and showing how she learns her way through the ways of man and the new world she has come to. They could even make it 2 different universes with the same or different actresses, but I very much doubt anyone would go on big and small screen at the same time, not that it has never been done though.

In conclusion, Wonder Woman has proven staying power, her animated direct to DVD film was a very high seller (even beating out some Batman titles), and is one of the single most ignored characters in the DC Universe. There is no female character more recognizable in all of comics and she is barely eclipsed in recognition by some of the men in comics. She has staying power and would obviously make ticket sales at the box. She does not need to be introduced in a Batman or Superman film and definitely needs her origin told BEFORE a Justice League film is released. Why WB/DC keeps not making anything is beyond me, but when they do, it is so unfaithful to the comic, no one wants it. The animated film and the Lynda Carter series worked because they had the essence of the character, the 2011 pilot did not. All it takes is a faithful interpretation and we are all over it, mess the storyline up too much, we won't buy in. This is proven time and again...

I'm all for animated TV shows, especially when it comes to superheroes. It's probably the medium that they thrive the best outside of comic books.

However, live action TV gets criticism because it just can't handle the elements needed for this particular genre. Special effects and other stuff are way to expensive for TV to provide a budget for in order to give the audience the fullest "superhero" experience. Movies, on the other hand, can handle such stuff.

And please stop bringing up the idea of a Wonder Woman live action TV show. Let that idea die out. It worked in the 70s, but it wouldn't now. Wondy only deserves animation and a big screen adaptation.

Wonder Woman can thrive on both. My wish is for her to get the recognition she deserves with big screen treatment, but with production values as they are, if the right network gets it and puts the effort into it. By that token, CBS would be better to foot the bill for WW than the CW as they have a higher production budget. The CW has done well with the effects they have used though. YES, I want a WW film, but I would be happy just to get a live action rendition of the character again...

I think it's good for Wonder Wonder to appear in Batman vs Superman because that'll get people more excited for her own movie which is definitely coming. I'm also glad that they put Amazon "on hold" because that premise is awful for TV. Finally, we're starting to get a good mix of CB TV and movies with all these new shows DC is coming out with (Flash, Constantine, Gotham, etc), The Walking Dead is getting a spin-off, and hopefully Marvel will give us good TV soon because AoS just doesn't cut it for me personally, anyways, superheroes seem to be taking over TV as well as movie sands that's fine by me:)

AGENTS could definitely be better, but I was not truly expecting a phenomenal series to begin with. Not sold on CONSTANTINE or GOTHAM yet, I will hold judgment for after I see a few episodes. As fir ARROW, it gets better every week and is one of my favorite shows on TV. I also enjoyed SMALLVILLE, but the best episodes were the team-ups with other heroes, and the ep with Lynda Carter. I am just saying as much as she deserves the big screen and could EASILY carry her own weight without being introduced in another film first, I would not rule out a TV series as long as it was FAITHFUL to the source material.

I keep bringing up how good the street level Marvel heroes would make excellent tv shows, and if produced well, I'd find that preferable to a movie every 3 years or so. Daredevil, Heroes For Hire, and Punisher would all work well for FX, or even HBO if possible. Plus you get to do a big crossover every year with the season finales.

I also feel a tv show is the best way to reintroduce audiences to Daredevil, rather than another movie.

What's wrong with a Daredevil show? I'd rather get something big and fantastic on the big screen, and it doesn't mean he can't STILL have a movie later. But a Daredevil budget would be soooo tv-friendly. And the drama, crime element...it's seriously perfect.

@SotoJuiceMan

That's true, but it's MUCH easier to pitch a show to a network, even if you work for Disney, when the budget isn't huge.

@ruadh, that is what I was basically saying, every 3 years is a long wait and not enough stories when you REALLY love the character and they are done right...

As well as better networks.

Right on. Yeah, it just makes sense to me. And it'd be nice to have a solid super hero show, or a few, to get into. I've never tried Arrow, just not my thing. But it's nice for the people who are into it.

Also, when I said, "I'd rather get something big and fantastic on the big screen," I was basically saying that I'd rather have something fantastic, like the Avengers, on the big screen, meanwhile something like Daredevil could be truly amazing on tv.

Well...they aren't doing Punisher, yet, but I'm pretty damned satisfied about the announcement today. :)
