My Choices For THE PUNISHER

My Choices For THE PUNISHER

As a change of pace from what I usually write, I want to give some ideas as to who could handle The Punisher. I give a few ideas as to who could do The Punisher justice in the MCU.

Showrunner: Adam Wingard
Star: Dan Stevens

Why? If you've seen You're Next or The Guest, then this should be a no brainer. Adam is an excellent writer, who really does a good job of blending horror elements with the pacing of a thriller. The results are explosive, terrifying, and encapculating to watch. Dan might be a bit young to play Frank Castle, but that said, Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) tends to skew more towards younger actors for their roles. Dan is also a very intense person, and can turn on a dime.

Showrunner: Pete Travis
Star: Karl Urban

Why? Dredd was a great film, and Karl Urban made for a great Judge Dredd. That said, I don't see a sequel happening anytime soon, and these two could partner together for an excellent take on The Punisher. Especially with how violent and action-packed Dredd was, it would translate well to The Punisher.

Showrunner: Graham Yost
Star: Timothy Olyphant

Why? Graham is known for a few well known action movies (Speed, The Last Castle) but he's also well known for collaborating on Justified with Timothy Olyphant. I think the blend of action and humor could make a great mix for Punisher.

Who do you want to see take on The Punisher? Let me know!

Dan Stevens as The Punisher is an inspired choice. I like it. Great choices overall though, man.

Nice choices, but I think Dan Stevens would be better suited to Iron Fist.

Karl Urban for sure.

@TheBritAvenger He's going to be too big-time for TV right now with his movie career blowing up.

Apparently Dredd was awesome because Alex Garland played a larger role than just writing the script...so Alex Garland as the showrunner for that example.

As much as I enjoyed The Guest, Wingard would need to bring his You're Next
A-game if you wanna see a good-great Punisher flick/show.

I have no views on the last one cuz' I haven't seen Justified, Speed, or The Last Castle.

Showrunner: James DeMonaco
Star: Frank Grillo
Damn if only Grillo wasn't the MCU Crossbones because Purge: Anarchy was a straight-up Punisher flick.

Dan Stevens seems a bit weedy to me but I haven't seen THe Guest and he bares a resemblance to one of my old colleagues who used to annoy me so I think that plays a part.

Karl Urban for the win.

Other Options are:

James Caviezel, Jon Hamm or maybe Owain Yeoman.

Personally I'd like them to cast a bit older for the Punisher than the actors you have suggested, but interesting selections nonetheless.

I think going older has two distinct advantages - firstly it allows the character to stand apart from most of the other male protagonists within the MCU, having him more as a grizzled veteran of the vigilante business with a lifetime's worth of bitterness built up (think Clint Eastwood in Gran Torino or similar, though not as elderly) and secondly it means they can just about still make the Vietnam backstory work, pitching the character in a similar age bracket to Samuel L Jackson's Nick Fury. Of course they could change this up to any more recent conflict if they so wished, but I think it would be fun to explore that era in the MCU if they have the chance.

Dan Stevens is badass but not Punisher.

Karl Urban is good but over casted something special.

And no.

Manu Bennett for Frank Castle.

I like Joe Manganiello for Punisher but I think they might cast him as Deathstroke, dammit.

Anyone but Frank Grillo or Manu Bennett or the guy who plays Don Draper. I'm especially tired of seeing [frick]ing Frank Grillo cast as Caste with his high-pitched voice and his short & slim frame.

Bradley Cooper as The Punisher maybe? Watching American Sniper made me really, really want to see Clint Eastwood direct a Punisher film at some point. Plus, if Cooper's cast, maybe they can have a fun little Raccoon & Castle encounter come time for Infinity Wars. Jake Gyllenhaal could make for a great Punisher too the more that I think about it. There's a part in Nightcrawler where he looked completely unrecognisable to me, kind of reminded me of Jim Carrey (but in a very good, creepy sort of way that worked for the film very well). End of Watch and Prisoners would be good starting ground for seeing how great Gyllenhaal could be in the role.

Mark wahlberg would actually make a pretty good Punisher, or Gullenhaal, I was thinking about this today. Olyphant could do pretty good, I don't like Urban's face for the Punisher.

I mean c'mon are we running that short on italian American actors? The punisher doesn't have to be pretty, he's a strong jawed, black haired Italian from New York City with a noose crooked as a lightning bolt from being broken so many times. He's big and buff, not some pretty little nancy boy with nice cheekbones.

You're gonna have to change the background of Frank Castle to make him more contemporary. I like Dan Stevens.

John Wick is the punisher movie we all wanted but never got. No way Disney would ever allow something that hardcore!

Gerard Butler is my choice for the Punisher. He is perfect for it. Dan Stevens is too young and not tough looking enough. The other choices are good especially Karl Urban.

Watch the documentary about Showrunners. It takes a hella lot more than being able to direct a good movie to manage a show.
