AVATAR 3: Rumor Has It James Cameron's Current Cut Of The Movie Clocks In At A Colossal NINE Hours

No matter whether you love or hate Avatar: The Way of Water, we have a feeling you'll be gobsmacked to know that filmmaker James Cameron is said to be sitting on a massive nine-hour cut of Avatar 3...

Avatar: The Way of Water is now in theaters, and the response from fans and critics alike has been a mostly positive one. More importantly, the sequel is on track to be a massive box office hit this weekend, likely ensuring James Cameron's ambitious future plans for the sci-fi franchise will almost certainly come to fruition.

Whatever happens next, Avatar 3 has already been shot, as have parts of a fourth movie (which we may or may not see depending on how much of a profit the next two instalments make).

Now, a very interesting rumour is doing the rounds (via SFFGazette.com) about the 2024 prequel suggesting Cameron's current cut clocks in at approximately nine hours! If this is even close to being accurate, that's downright bonkers, and the filmmaker has enough footage on his hands there for at least two, if not three movies.

It goes without saying that the film won't actually end up being nine hours long, and it's always possible some of the footage will be used for the planned fourth chapter.

However, we can't help but wonder whether Disney and Cameron are considering splitting this third movie into two, similar to what The Hunger Games and Harry Potter franchises did once upon a time. We're guessing decisions like that will be made after the final numbers are in for Avatar: The Way of Water, though.

We know the director hopes to make fourth and fifth instalments, while there's even been talk of a sixth. With that in mind, it feels like, after the thirteen-year gap between the first movie and this month's sequel, we'll be seeing an awful lot of Pandora in the coming years.

We recently attended Avatar: The Way of Water's global press conference, and Cameron told us all about his approach to the sequel's strong female leads. Find that by clicking here.

Avatar 3 is currently set to be released in theaters on December 20, 2024.

IDK, man. Anyone bringing in something that needlessly exaggerated is probably compensating for something... and we know it's not his income, for sure.

Sigh.

It's just before cutting out what isn't needed. Considering you praised love and thunder (and they did something similar), you'd think this is more along the lines of what you'd want.

And I'd watch it. After seeing it in Imax and Dolby Cinema, I gotta go with the latter. The atmos sound and hdr provides a better overall experience, also the chairs weren't from the [frick]ing 90's. The "15%" more didn't help, and it didn't looked framed for Imax like Dune was. Although the Dolby Cinema had the hfr in the action scenes, it worked for the most part, but I wish it kind of didn't lol. I am hyped for Titanic in her 3d, it will have to be used sparingly unless the soap opera effect will be too much.

@bobevanz - is the 3D worth it? I'm typically not a fan of it, but this is of course different.

I don't think I could devote my entire day to one film but if I had the time it definitely couldn't be an Avatar film. Impossible

@CAPTAINPINKEYE - Nah, no one cares about that here. More concerned about bashing a film that sounds like it hasn't even been edited yet, assuming it gets made at all. People tend to complain about the writing on this site sometimes, but it seems like most of the time the trinity (Josh, Hamilton, Ruby) is just catering to their audience.

Cameron should just do the crazy thing and split in eight episodes, and premiere a new one in cinemas every month for eight months straight. Now that would be something.

It was always going to have a massive opening weekend, I think we will get a true sense of how well it will do from the second weekend drop.
I haven’t seen it yet, but I remember the first one just capturing the public’s attention and this one just doesn’t feel like it is having the cultural impact of the first.
This will still make a lot, but these cost a lot to make. I would be surprised if this makes more than the first one.
