AVATAR Director James Cameron Jokes It's Time For Matt Damon To "Get Over" Losing Jake Sully Role

Matt Damon turned down the lead role in Avatar and ended up missing out on hundreds of millions of dollars. James Cameron has little in the way of sympathy, saying the actor needs to get "get over it."

There are times when an actor missing out on a role becomes the stuff of Hollywood legend. Leonardo DiCaprio nearly played Spider-Man, for example, while Tom Cruise came this close to suiting up as Iron Man in place of Robert Downey Jr.

Matt Damon, meanwhile, almost took on the role of Jake Sully in 2009's Avatar. Director James Cameron initially wanted a big name for the title role, and went so far as to offer the Bourne star 10% of whatever the movie's box office revenue ultimately ended up being.

The actor decided not to turn his back on the Bourne franchise, though, and then-relative unknown Sam Worthington ended up playing Jake instead (we're not sure if he secured as impressive a deal).

Damon has shared his regrets on more than one occasion, admitting that he ended up leaving "more money on the table than any actor" - it would have been around $290 million - and that "in having to say no that I was probably passing on the chance to ever work with [Cameron]."

During a recent interview (via SFFGazette.com) to promote Avatar: The Way of Water, Cameron noted that Damon is still "beating himself up" for missing out on Avatar, but doesn't seem to feel too sorry for the actor.

"Matt, you know, you're kinda like one of the biggest movie stars in the world," the filmmaker added, clearly having fun with Damon's decision to turn him down. "Get over it." After explaining why the actor couldn't star in Avatar, Cameron acknowledged that he might just give him a cameo in the sci-fi franchise "so that the world is in equilibrium again."

Damon probably wouldn't turn his nose up at the idea, especially as he showed up for a couple of fun cameos in Thor: Ragnarok and Thor: Love and Thunder as an Asgardian actor playing Loki.

It would have been interesting seeing him play Jake, of course, but it's a role Worthington has definitely made his own.

This is weird. Did Damon make recent comments about it or something?

He’s clearly joking around. Matt Damon was wanted by the studio and would have gotten a MASSIVE royalty payback from the film if he had accepted.

He missed out on about $229 million to be exact. Lol!

I would be whining endlessly too.

300 million is more than most movies make period. That’s crazy. I would act in the worst movie of all time for that and would never even call it a bad movie.

I like the fact a BIG name wasn't in the role. It allowed Jake to be an... ahem Avatar for us the viewer experiencing all of this alongside him instead of just becoming a Matt Damon vehicle. By the way, if you like big visual theater experiences, and the advancement of technology in VFX check out this film. The story is fine. It isn't groundbreaking, but some of the visuals are.

I'd say check it out if you're into big visually stunning films, and also Shout out to Zoe Saldana who is spectacular in both of these films. Her acting alone elevates these films.

@bobevanz - I don't want to give away spoilers, but there is some big emotional beats in this film, and she handled it perfectly. You really believe her here, and she's a giant blue alien. People have their complaints about these films, but none should include her performances.

Better leaving it to Sam Worthington. He’s got nothing better to do so he’s perfect for however many dumb sequels they make

@AnthonyVonGeek - considering he's entering his car, it's very likely he's being harassed by either a heckler or the paparazzi. Either way, I'd flip them off too.

It's past time for James to shut the f#ck up about almost everything, including what others should and shouldn't do. And this includes how to correctly write "strong female characters" and other things he claims he does better than others, as his way is always the right way. His ego is huge.
