Avatar: The Way of Water is now just a week away from splashing down into theaters, but that's not where James Cameron's plans for Pandora end. The filmmaker has already shot the third instalment along with part of the fourth, though the latter will only move forward if the upcoming sequel is a box office hit.

Beyond that, we know he hopes to make a fifth film, and franchise producer Jon Landau has just dropped quite the bombshell in an interview with io9 (via SFFGazette.com).

He reveals that, if Avatar 5 does happen, we'll see the Na'vi leave Pandora for Earth!

"In movie five there is a section of the story where we go to Earth. And we go to it to open people’s eyes, open Neytiri’s eyes, to what exists on Earth," Landau teases, dropping quite the potential spoiler there. "Earth is not just represented by the RDA. Just like you’re defined by the choices you make in life, not all humans are bad. Not all Na’vi are good."

"And that’s the case here on Earth," the veteran producer continued, hinting at what sounds like a bold new direction for the sci-fi series. "And we want to expose Neytiri to that."

In the same interview, he was asked about the leaked sequel titles from several years ago. The Way of Water obviously ended up being used for the sequel, but will Avatar: The Seed Bearer, Avatar: The Tulkun Rider, and Avatar: The Quest For Eywa also crop up in the coming years?

"We have decided on titles, but I would not go by those other three titles that were out there," Landau confirms. "You know, if you roll the dice one in six times, you’ll pick the right number."

We're sure the filmmaker wouldn't have dropped that bombshell about Neytiri by mistake, and do wonder whether Avatar: The Way of Water actually lays the groundwork for her eventual trip to Jake's home. With the sequel now rapidly approaching, it won't be too much longer before we find out!

Are you excited to check the sequel out next weekend?

If The Way of Water doesn't turn a profit, The Way of Cancellation will be the sequel.

I don’t get it. I understand the major interest for the first one has to do with 3D. But the story was generic.

Do we honesty need 4 more Avatar films?….

@LilJimmy - I'm not against it if the sequel elevates the narrative.

Air, Water, Wind, Fire ("holy f*ck"), Heart....
I feel like those will be the themes for the 5 films.

@ChimiFnChangas - Damn you right I completely messed that one up. I knew the 5, but was trying to think what the first movie had to do with and the first thing that came to mind was them flying in the air. Although it should be Earth for how they connected to Eywa. Did my mans dirty, my bad.

Really cocky talk coming from the Avatar gang. I’m on the fence about seeing the second one in theaters. I’m not even considering a a 3rd 4thor 5th. Maybe just make a good sequel to the movie released in 2009 without losing us all for making us wait so long for characters we barely got invested in.

The last one was actually going to be the best. See, a family of Na'vi accidentally get vacuumed up by an unmanned explorer drone that was deployed to Pandora to collect small samples of Unobtainium, and when it was opened up on Earth the family would escape, but they would lose the youngest one that ends up hiding out in a mini van with a single mother and her two sons, one of which is wheelchair bound. Now, I don't want to spoil anything but there is a couple of really cool scenes were M'Ac is chased by a bunch of dogs while driving a little kid's toy car, and you would NOT believe the dance scene at the MacDoggles.

If they really want people to see five of these films they need to improve the characters and story, which from what i’ve heard still aren’t great in the second one. Sam Worthington just isn’t a big enough star for a franchise that big. He’s not charismatic or interesting enough. Zoe Saldana is great, but she can’t carry the whole thing.

Character is key. Giant megafranchises like the MCU weren’t big because of their spectacle, but the love for their complex and interesting and loveable characters.

What was the point of highlighting SPOILS just to say the spoiler in the same sentence?

So based on the evidence, we will be getting Avatar 5 in just over 40 years.

Let's all start holding our breath.
