AVATAR Has Been Removed From Disney+ Ahead Of Planned Re-Release In Theaters Next Month

Disney is coming under fire after Avatar was quietly removed from its streaming service ahead of a remastered version of the movie being released in theaters next month. Read on for further details...

Earlier this year, we learned that Avatar will be re-released in theaters on September 23. With remastered visuals and effects, the studio is giving fans the opportunity to relive James Cameron's 2009 3D blockbuster on the biggest screens possible, but what if you'd rather watch it at home?

Well, you'd best hope you have a Blu-ray copy sitting on your shelf!

Avatar has mysteriously vanished from Disney+ with no explanation. What's On Disney Plus (via SFFGazette.com) was the first to spot the change, and there's been quite a bit of backlash online.

Subscribers weren't notified in advance, and the change has taken effect across the entire world. The cynical explanation for this is that Avatar may have been taken down to ensure as many people head to theaters as possible to watch the movie again, thereby increasing its chances of box office success (it's already the highest-grossing movie of all time).

If so, that's a little shady, as it comes across like Disney not wanting to spend all that time and money hyping up Avatar's re-release, only for people to watch at home rather than pay for a ticket. Ultimately, that's their choice, as remastered visuals and sound don't mean as much to some as others.

However, there's another possible explanation here; it could be that Disney+ plans to upload the remastered and improved edition to the streaming service, ensuring people can watch the best possible version of Avatar. Though we can't see that happening until after the planned theatrical release.

This December's sequel, Avatar: The Way of Water, is set more than a decade after the events of the first film and it begins to tell the story of the Sully family (Jake, Neytiri, and their kids), the trouble that follows them, the lengths they go to keep each other safe, the battles they fight to stay alive, and the tragedies they endure.

Directed by Avatar helmer James Cameron and produced by Cameron and Jon Landau, Avatar: The Way of Water stars Zoe Saldana, Sam Worthington, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Cliff Curtis, Joel David Moore, CCH Pounder, Edie Falco, Jemaine Clement, and Kate Winslet.

Avatar: The Way of Water arrives in theaters worldwide on December 16.

While I like the promotion of the film in theaters, considering much of the hate for the film came when it was released in home, it's pretty greedy removing it from streaming so we have to see it in theaters.

The hype around Avatar the first time was the 3d tech. In present day, 3d tech is almost completely shunned by modern audiences. So it'll be interesting to see how the re-release does. Will it entice people back into 3d viewings (via nostalgia) just in time for the sequel? Or will it shed light on how mediocre Avatar is without the tech hype? If it's the second one, what will that do to peoples interest in the sequel?

it's quite a unique place to be in for a movie franchise.

As for removing it from D+, that is just a dick move.

@TheManWithoutFear - I agree, I don't enjoy 3D at the theater. I wear glasses so it's both uncomfortable and a strain on my eyes. Recently though I bought an Oculus 2 (Virtual Reality headset) and have been watching 3D movies in VR and absolutely loving it. I even watched Avatar not long ago that way which was first time I saw it in 3D.

Dune 3D in VR basically had me shedding a tear as it was so beautiful, it was like I was watching in IMAX

@WarMonkey - i did not even know 3d in VR was a thing. I will have to give that a go for sure

@TheManWithoutFear - There is an app called "Bigscreen" that simulates watching in a theater at it's amazing. There's even a social aspect where people share their stream of movies, shows, or games for others to watch, a lot of the movies are in 3D. Even hangout places just to chat, can also turn on/off others in the theater. It also has a selection of 3D movies to purchase or you can stream from your PC/media server or just copy the movie directly into the device.

I watch like 80% of my entertainment in there now

@WarMonkey - So it's a screen, and on the screen is a room, and in that room is a screen, and on that screen is the movie...?

Sounds like a trip! Don't knock it til you try it i guess.

Makes sense from a financial point-of-view, but it also makes sense that it would piss some Disney+ subscribers off for giving them no warning.

That's summy, I particularily subscribed to D+ BECAUSE it was supposed to be a perpetual library for Disney/FOX films without a revolving door like Netlflix.

Glad I have my bluray collection to fall back on. This makes me question wether I want to keep being subscribed...

Disney wants people to pay to see it in theaters, so they removed it from their streaming service? I'm so (yawn) SHOCKED (/yawn).

Still, regardless, Physical Media > Streaming in instances like this.

Nth reason why streaming sucks. You don't actually own a copy to enjoy for yourself, just a revokable permission from a distributor.

I don't even care about avatar, never seen it. But the mere idea of this is incredibly scummy.

@xfactor - I mean....I get it. However if you seen it, you've seen it. If not then why now all of a sudden you wanna see it? The [frick] lol?
xfactor
xfactor - 8/19/2022, 10:37 AM
@MachinimaMan - exactly. Movie is over ten years old already and has been played countless times on cable and streaming. Why the [frick] would anyone pay for this shit again? Man I hope this sequel flop’s (doubtful I know) but I hate that this is Cameron’s most celebrated work.
MachinimaMan
MachinimaMan - 8/19/2022, 10:40 AM
@xfactor - I did like Avatar though, however I think it is an experience best saved for film than DVD or streaming. But the magic is gone.

I am excited for the sequel though, because of it being an original IP, the only thing that isn't original is the story but the world of Pandora is really cool and something that is fresh to see something original and not based on a known comic book/novel/game/nostalgic franchise.

I did watch T2 in theaters when it was re-released, that was WAYYYYYYYYY better watching in a theater than at home.
xfactor
xfactor - 8/19/2022, 10:48 AM
@MachinimaMan - I could watch T1 and T2 all day in theaters. Same goes with aliens, true lies and the abyss. The first avatar I couldn’t get into. The massive hype at the time surrounding the film had me going until it was time to watch the film. Granted I didn’t see it in cinemas which more than likely botched the experience altogether, but I’ve tried three times with this movie and I could not make it through. I definitely felt the ambition going for it, but it just didn’t wow me. And my expectations for the sequel are much lower
MachinimaMan
MachinimaMan - 8/19/2022, 10:52 AM
@xfactor - Oh man you missed out, it looked SOOOOOOO GOOOD in theaters. Idk if you did see it in theaters later on, but when I saw it, I was fully immersed in this world. It did look a little too unreal. Granted the theater at the time had 20 screens. The screen Avatar was playing on was 1, but this wasn't a premium screen or updated theater section. This was the old ass rickety, move your big [frick]ing head out the way type of seats, and it STILL made me feel totally immersed into the movie.

I will say the story is the only downfall but I feel like now they got this origin and intro out the way, I feel now the story is going to go uphill for me...................I hope......

I wasn't aware of this. However I seriously doubt that there has been as much online backlash about this old decade movie being quietly removed compared to the mass removal of more than 40 titles from HBO Max that happened between Tuesday and Wednesday and among them were a LOT of Max originals scripted content.

I think Josh is mixing up some things. The one that has been under fire this week and continues to do for getting out their content is WB Discovery, not Disney.
