AVATAR Is Getting Another Re-Release In China, Furthering Its Lead Over AVENGERS: ENDGAME

It's been confirmed that 2009's Avatar is getting yet another re-release in Chinese theaters, a decision that's going to further increase the 3D blockbuster's lead over Avengers: Endgame. Check it out...

Avatar: The Way of Water finally arrives in theaters this Friday and in news which has proven incredibly fortuitous for the sequel, it drops in China the same day as the rest of the world. Only a handful of Hollywood movies have been released in the Middle Kingdom in recent years, putting a significant dent in the box office hauls of several huge titles.

In 2019, Avengers: Endgame was able to do what many thought impossible when it passed 2009's Avatar to become the highest-grossing movie of all time. However, a re-release during the pandemic (and again earlier this year) has ensured the 3D blockbuster has retaken the top spot, giving it a healthy $120+ million lead.

Now, the movie should only further its advantage, as Avatar is set to receive yet another re-release in China this week according to Deadline (via SFFGazette.com). It started rolling out there yesterday, and is said to include an "exclusive Easter Egg" for local audiences.

This is said to be similar to the remastered version that was released back in September, and we're sure it will add even more millions to Avatar's already record-breaking box office haul. Helping its cause is the fact that the upcoming sequel makes use of the Chinese Cinity cinema system that presents 3D, 4K, and high-frame-rate imagery in groundbreaking new ways.

In 2010, Avatar earned over $200 million in China, with a 2021 re-release netting an additional $58 million. That helped push it past Avengers: Endgame before this year's remastered version increased the sci-fi blockbuster's stronghold over that #1 spot.

Set more than a decade after the events of the first film, the upcoming sequel begins to tell the story of the Sully family (Jake, Neytiri, and their kids), the trouble that follows them, the lengths they go to keep each other safe, the battles they fight to stay alive,  and the tragedies they endure.

Avatar: The Way of Water splashes down in theaters worldwide on December 16.

I don't understand how re-releases can legitimately factor into rankings for highest grossing film of all time. To me it should only factor in initial box office totals for its first run, and the time frame of its initial run should be limited as well so it's fair. If the film is still turning out huge sales then it can extend its stay in theaters to make as much money as they want to meet demand, but the initial run tallying ends the same for all films.

I think there should be 2 rankings, initial gross and total gross.

Because isn't Gone With The Wind still the highest grossing film of all time adjusted for inflation because it was released during a time in American history (I won't pretend I remember the history) when everyone was going to the movies in mass? And like no film would ever catch up so they had to make some arbitrary rule about inflation or something so modern films could have a ranking system.

Re-releases on anniversaries here and there is one thing but once you start doing just to keep squeezing money out it’s ridiculous. It shouldn’t be able to keep being factored into the original box office run

@GhostDog - ...or maybe it's to get people caught up for the sequel, since the first movie is more than 10 years old?

@Origame - two things can be true.

@Origame - this is true but one does have to think why it was re released so often. Shortly after Endgame came out wasn’t re released then?

@GhostDog - I genuinely don't see the problem here. How's this any different than just keeping it in theaters for extended periods of time? Nothings stopping every other movie from re-releasing.

@Arthorious - it was re released that often because people were willing to pay. And it wasn't released all that soon after endgame. It was years later when marketing started for the sequel.

@Origame - oh yeah I see, there was going to another release back in 2020 in China, along with Inception and few other movies but China shut down their theaters. I stand corrected

Avatar's haul in China compared to the size of the market at the time was insane. They simply had to secure the release there, I'm sure the entire project had that as a taken-for-granted cornerstone of everything.
