AVATAR: THE WAY OF WATER First Reviews Splash Down Alongside An Early Rotten Tomatoes Score

The first reviews for James Cameron's Avatar: The Way of Water have surfaced, but how is the long-awaited sequel faring on Rotten Tomatoes? You can find out what the early word is on the movie right here!

The review embargo for Avatar: The Way of Water lifted a little earlier today, but what are critics saying about James Cameron's long-awaited Avatar sequel? It's been thirteen years since that groundbreaking 3D blockbuster was released, and with this follow-up promising to push the boundaries of technology with dazzling underwater sequences, expectations are through the roof.

However, as we noted over at SFFGazette.com, it might be wise to temper those, even if it's just a small extent.

While the general consensus appears to be a very positive one thus far, Avatar: The Way of Water definitely isn't being hailed as a masterpiece.

The Guardian, for example, delivers a 2* verdict that concludes by asking, "[What] do we find aside from the high-tech visual superstructure? The floatingly bland plot is like a children’s story without the humour; a YA story without the emotional wound; an action thriller without the hard edge of real excitement."

Empire, however, does award it 5*, saying: "James Cameron has surfaced with a cosmic marine epic that only he could make: eccentric, soulful, joyous, dark and very, very blue. Yes, he’s still leagues ahead of the pack."

That gives you a good idea of how much opinions are currently varying, with the overhaul consensus being that, while the VFX impresses, the sequel is overlong with a hit-and-miss story.

Of course, the best way to gauge the response to a movie like Avatar: The Way of Water is with that all-important Rotten Tomatoes score. As of right now, it sits at 83%. That's an excellent score and equivalent to roughly a 4/5 or 8/10. However, it's not the one we expected for a movie that was hailed as some sort of groundbreaking masterpiece in those Tweets!

Overall, we're definitely glad to hear that the sequel doesn't disappoint, and it sounds like we're in for a fun, albeit bum-numbing, experience this coming weekend. Just like Avatar, though, we anticipate some people loving it and others not understanding what all the fuss is about.

Are you still excited to check out Avatar: The Way of Water on the big screen?

I’m so pumped for this!

Kinda bummed because there aren’t any IMAX screens in my state anymore.
Thankfully one of the novelty theatres recently got a 4K projector, so at least the picture is going to be crisp!

@Comicmoviejunki - the people who largley contributed to the 2.9 billion intake for the 2009 movie would disagree.

The people who've prebooked for part 2 leading it to an estimate of between 400 to 500mill 1st weekend would disagree.

@GetsugaTensho22 - I for one and excited to go see it. Got it booked at the best screen in the UK, opening night. Just need to make sure and empty my bladder well before hand.

I also hears there's the MI6 and Oppenheimer imax previews playing before. Even better night in store.

@UniqNo - The sequel is guaranteed to make less than the first one.

That sounds like a very big statement that I shouldn't be able to make, but it's not. It's a very, very safe thing to say.

@ObserverIO - I still imagine it will become the highest grossing since the effects of the pandemic have more or less changed the cinema and theatre business and people going elsewhere for their viewing content.

Theatrical releases are definitly not getting the same kind of love as in 1997 or 2009 or even 2019 for that matter.

I imagine it also won't make 2.9 billion, but i know that by the time they come around to releasing number 3, both the 1st and second will get another release getting part 1 closer to that number 3B

Just saw it. The VFX under water is quite something when you first see it. Very technically impressive and lushful. A very good watch, even if it doesn't blow you away with a genius story.

@alibaba3317 - ah… so pretty much the same as te first? Great SFX with an unoriginal story?

@X75 - I would say it is a little more giving than the first one, story-wise, but yeah, pretty much.

I never trust Rotten Tomatoes as it is, but I definitely don't ever trust early reviews.

Oh and disclaimer, I tried...I really tried to unblock certain people who I had blocked previously and some already have validated my need to block them in the first place.
Now they are blocked for good.

It's funny too because the discourse is quite pleasant here without them and the only ones with whom it becomes difficult are the ones who instigate....not me.
