Disney has officially released a new batch of stills from James Cameron's Avatar: The Way of Water (via SFFGazette.com). Some of these will be familiar, but we finally have them without any annoying watermarks. There are also a few brand-new shots reminding us just how stunning this world of Pandora really is.

Cameron has been making a lot headlines recently, dismissing concerns about this sequel's runtime by saying "give me a f***ing break" and claiming trolls will have to "shut the f*** up" once they revisit 2009's Avatar. The filmmaker has also claimed he may not helm Avatar 4 and 5, though noted that those movies happening will depend on how well the next two instalments perform.

One thing we do know is that Disney will pull out all the stops to make sure they're a hit!

Set more than a decade after the events of the first film, Avatar: The Way of Water begins to tell the story of the Sully family (Jake, Neytiri, and their kids), the trouble that follows them, the lengths they go to keep each other safe, the battles they fight to stay alive, and the tragedies they endure.

Directed by Avatar helmer James Cameron and produced by Cameron and Jon Landau, Avatar: The Way of Water stars Zoe Saldana, Sam Worthington, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Cliff Curtis, Joel David Moore, CCH Pounder, Edie Falco, Jemaine Clement, and Kate Winslet.

To whet audiences' appetites, Disney/20th Century Studios will re-release Avatar in theaters on September 23. As for Avatar: The Way of Water, that arrives in theaters worldwide on December 16.

That does look pretty damn impressive.

Good thing too, because the visuals are the number 1 reason I'm gonna see this movie. Really look forward to how the oceans of Pandora are gonna be and look like.

Also, is this gonna be Zoe Saldana's fourth 2 billion movie she stars in?

In twenty years people are going to look back on the movie and say “It looks like a cheap toy commercial.” CG does not age well. Just look at the Star Wars prequels.

@santoanderson - When used sparingly and smartly it ages very well;
Terminator 2
Jurassic Park
Titanic
Lord of the Rings trilogy for example

When they make entire worlds out of CGI and rely on it too heavily is where it stops fooling the eye.

@santoanderson - Avatar’s cgi holds up greatly after 10 plus years.

"Unbelievably Realistic" is kind of a contradiction.

@HAILHYDRA - Good point.

To add to that, "unbelievable" (and its various forms) is what I call an "exaggeration" word. The meaning falls apart once it's taken literally.

Looks about like it did in 2009- blue

@PapaSpank54 - except it doesn't. Literally better in every aspect of the CGI.

more interested in this than anything Star Wars has to offer

@Dredd97 - saw the trailer in cinemas last night and it brought me back to how it felt like being 10 years old and seeing the first one in imax like twice. cameron is too good a film-maker to count on, regardless of how much the internet loves shitting on avatar lol

@tmp3 @Dredd97

People are dumb or have short memories. Avatar was made for the big screen and it’s probably the most “jaw dropping” experience I’ve ever had at the movies.

@regularmovieguy - sad state of affairs that avatar 2 is one of the few big budget films this year that looks like it has any actual care put behind it
Dredd97
Dredd97 - 7/10/2022, 8:25 PM
@tmp3 - oh same here. there's something ethereal about it. Cameron gets how to project you to another world unlike other directors or franchises out there right now. so yeah, I'm excited lol
Dredd97
Dredd97 - 7/10/2022, 8:26 PM
@regularmovieguy - I think its both, yeah lol agree with tmp3 it feels like an actual passion project. we don't see a lot of those outside of Tarantino or Scorsese

tmp3 - 7/10/2022, 8:51 PM
@Dredd97 - ethereal’s like the perfect word to describe it, haha. i feel like too many big movies nowadays feel like they can just wink and nudge at audiences instead of actually trying, so it’s refreshing to see cameron commit to fully into the mythology and universe he’s built
Dredd97
Dredd97 - 7/10/2022, 8:56 PM
@tmp3 - I agree. and treat that world with respect and, like you said, care. even Marvel doesn't seem to really care anymore.

Avatar sucks and so did the teaser trailer but the CGI is next level - if only Marvel put as much thought/work into their VFX..
