Yesterday, Disney officially released the first trailer for Avatar: The Way of Water, and that's now been followed by some stunning hi-res stills from James Cameron's epic 3D blockbuster.

These aren't just screenshots from the teaser (which premiered in theaters in front of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness), with most highlighting key moments and characters from the movie. Even if the story fails to hit the mark, we're expecting Cameron to deliver some breathtaking visuals, and with the filmmaker pushing the boundaries of what 3D can do, it's hard not to be excited.

Set more than a decade after the events of the first film, Avatar: The Way of Water begins to tell the story of the Sully family (Jake, Neytiri, and their kids), the trouble that follows them, the lengths they go to keep each other safe, the battles they fight to stay alive, and the tragedies they endure.

Directed by James Cameron and produced by Cameron and Jon Landau, Avatar: The Way of Water stars Zoe Saldana, Sam Worthington, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Cliff Curtis, Joel David Moore, CCH Pounder, Edie Falco, Jemaine Clement, and Kate Winslet. To whet audiences' appetites, Disney/20th Century Studios will re-release Avatar in theaters on September 23.

Avatar: The Way of Water arrives in theaters worldwide on December 16.

@DoubleD - It made money because it was a giant 3D gimmick.

@TheFinestSmack - It takes more than just a giant 3D gimmick to make that kind of money.

The whole movie was great including the story.

@Marveladdict - You're in tiny minority that thinks it's massive snore fest. WORLDWIDE = $2,847,379,794 says different.

@DoubleD - Most people saw the movie because 3D tech was an exciting new thing. People went for the spectacle of trying 3D for the first time. I know a TON of people that either rarely go to movies, or have zero interest in sci-fi films, but they went to see Avatar because everyone was talking about the graphics and 3D insanity at the time. Sure the movie made money, but stores had a hell of a time giving away the pallets of unsold Avatar merch that nobody wanted because the story and characters were not the selling point of the movie.

@DoubleD - - It made money because it was a giant 3D gimmick. Millions spent monies to see "cutting edge technology". Millions were disappointed.

@Marveladdict - The people who didn't like this movie was because America, CEO's and U.S. Marines were the villains trying to take their world from them.

Because we polluted and destroyed Earth.

Knowing how much passion Cameron has for the oceans you know he’s gonna put up a spectacle creating his own water world

@manofillintent1 - same here. Pandora was already great, so I'm really looking forward to what he's gonna do with this new added element of water

I have zero interest in this. I barely liked the first one. I’d rather see a sequel to Alita: Battle Angel instead endless Avatar sequels.

I think these stories work well because, unlike Marvel and all the other big name movies everyone is an average movie goer when seeing these movies. I don't know anymore about these characters than the people sitting next to me in the movies. Now, when my wife asks who is that character, I can finally say I have no freaking idea, and I can proceed to enjoy the movie lol🤣🤣🤣

@Waddles - going from Ocean’s 8 to the sequel of biggest original movie of all time..that’s a glow up. Sounds like he can handle the pressure

I don't really care for the characters or story at the moment, but I'm definitely looking forward to seeing more of Pandora. Especially with the added element of water.

Pandora is pretty much a character in it's own right, and probably the most interesting one at that in the first movie. So I have high expectations from water-buff Cameron.

There is no question that what was done to film this movie is incredible. So much production being underwater and what the actors endured to make this movie deserves applause. However, it sucks that I still can't bring myself to care about it...
