BOX OFFICE: EDGE OF TOMORROW Earns $1.8 Million At Thursday Night Showings

Doug Liman's Edge of Tomorrow finally reached North America yesterday evening, and despite almost unanimously positive reviews, the sci-fi movie may only earn around $25 million this weekend.

Edge of Tomorrow has all the makings of a hit, but with The Fault In Our Stars poised to grab moviegoers attention this weekend, the $178 million budgeted movie looks set to debut in the $25 million range after earning $1.8 million at late Thursday night showings. However, that bests Tom Cruise's last sci-fi movie Oblivion, and some analysts believe that Edge of Tomorrow could earn as much as $35 million. It's simply too early to say at this point! However, since debuting overseas (where the Mission Impossible actor is a much bigger box office draw) in a handful of locations, the Doug Liman helmed movie has earned $33 million. Now, it looks set to also open in key territories including China, Russia, Australia, France and Mexico. Stay tuned for further updates!

Deserve more!
If good, smart & entertaining scifi films won't make money how will we get more!

Flippity flappity flop. To bad, critically praised and a good cinemascore, but summer has become overcrowded with blockbusters.

I called this. Me and someone got into it about DOFP's box-office legs, with him saying that EoT would eat away at DOFP. I told him EoT would only do $20-$25million. Looks like that's what will happen.

I'm sure I'll see it on video, but for me, Cruise hasn't made a truly great film since the first Mission: Impossible.

Its tragic when an awesome movie doesnt make the money it deserved (Pacific Rim & John Carter for example).

Its even more tragic when the actors and people who made it poke fun at their own movie and call it bad because it didnt make the money.
Not that Tom Cruise or anyone has for this...I just dont ever want to see that happen.

It's a shame they didn't push this back, it could've done well towards the end of summer.

@Gamera

Nah I don't think Tom and Emily will do that, on the interview with Graham Norton they said how hard it was to film in those heavy Exo-suits but they seem to be really proud of the movie.

@B&Y - Does that surprise you? Does it really surprise you that people who take movie opinions so personal see a ton of movies?

It'll be disappointing if it doesn't earn the box office returns it deserves. If it doesn't do well, I'll take comfort from the fact it's self contained and not meant to start a franchise so that those of us who enjoyed it can continue to do so for years to come without having to wonder, "what if?"

I give up on people and their obsession and fascination with generic tween sappy romance movies. P.S., Shailene Woodley the most average girl ever dies at the end of the movie.

@JorL

Edge of Tomorrow only did $30 million in 27 countries last weekend. But, at least this weekend he'll have China and Brazil. I would predict around $12 million in China. Not sure about Brazil, never payed attention to their recent numbers for summer blockbusters. I guess winter down there...

@HeavensWarrior actually, it's an adaptation of a japanese novel & a manga version "All You Need Is Kill", so it should be considered a comic book movie

Folks I just want to tell you - from the bottom of my heart - that I will NEVER take for granted how awesome it is that you all have me here to bring joy and mirth into your lives. It's truly humbling how awesome I am what with my sexist drunken humor and wisdom from various fortune cookies.

Just trying to bring a little sunshine - except to the albinos, but you know - the love is there.

I think that this highlights the importance of having a built in audience such as with comic books and young adult novels. The fact that Tom Cruise is getting this much competition (in apparently a really good film) from a young adult novel film with NO A list stars speaks volumes and is somewhat troubling.
