Doug Liman Says EDGE OF TOMORROW 2 Could Be His Next Film; Scheduling Issues All Sorted Out
It sounds like Edge of Tomorrow 2 may actually go into production a lot sooner than many of us expected, as director Doug Liman has now revealed that it might just be his next film. Come take a look!
Last October, we reported that an initial draft of the Edge of Tomorrow sequel script had finally been completed, but that there were scheduling issues that would likely push the film's production start date to 2019 at the earliest. However, according to a new interview snippet, it appears as though those aforementioned scheduling issues have now all been sorted out.
While speaking with Collider, director Doug Liman, who is returning to helm the sequel, offered a pretty major update regarding the eagerly-awaited project, admitting that while the scheduling conflicts between him, Tom Cruise, and Emily Blunt have now all been worked out, they're still working on finalizing the script. Read his comments below:
“We’re just working on the script… [We’re no longer working on scheduling issues], now it’s down to we have a window where we could go do it, and we’re frantically working on the script. It’s one of those movies that we’ll only go make if we love the script. It’s not one of those things where the studio is pushing us to make it and they don’t really care if it’s good or not. If the movie happens, it will be because Emily Blunt, Tom Cruise and myself are passionate about making it, which is a great place to be. She doesn’t need this movie, he doesn’t need this movie, and I don’t need it. We’re gonna make it if we really believe in it. We have story that the three of us love, so we’re working hard on the script.”
The most recent screenplay was penned by Race scribes Joe Shrapnel and Anna Waterhouse, both of whom were working from a story idea from the mind of Chris McQuarrie (Mission: Impossible 6), who also played an integral role in developing the original film's script.
Now, with the screenplay nearly complete and shooting schedules sorted out, could this actually mean that Liman may actually be ready to roll cameras before the end of the calendar year? When pressed on whether Edge of Tomorrow 2 would be his next film, he coyly replied, "It could be. It has the possibility of being my next film.”
Liman recently wrapped the dystopian sci-fi adaptation Chaos Walking, which stars Tom Holland (Spider-Man: Homecoming) and Daisy Ridley (Star Wars: The Last Jedi), and is expected to be in post-production on that film for the majority of the year, meaning he likely won't be free to film anything new until at least the end of the year. Coincidentally, the film's star, Tom Cruise, will also be occupied during this time frame as once he wraps Mission: Impossible 6 in the next few weeks, he's expected to head straight into filming Top Gun: Maverick and if a deal closes, could potentially be filming Quentin Tarantino's Untitled Manson Family Project this summer with Leonardo DiCaprio (The Wolf of Wall Street) and Margot Robbie (Suicide Squad). Blunt's schedule looks relatively open at the moment, especially after she wrapped Mary Poppins Returns and A Quiet Place, but considering she's one of Hollywood's most sought-after actresses, it's increasingly likely she'll sign on to something, if she hasn't already, relatively soon.
With all that information, it's probably a safe bet that cameras won't roll on Edge of Tomorrow 2 until at least the fourth quarter of this year or early 2019 once Cruise, Blunt, and Liman have all fulfilled their current obligations. Regardless, it seems like an Edge of Tomorrow sequel is now closer than ever to being a reality.
