JURASSIC WORLD: FALLEN KINGDOM Continues Trend Of Big Budget Films Cutting Out Their LGBT Characters

The recent entry in the Jurassic Park / Jurassic World franchise joins a smattering of recent blockbuster films that have, at the last minute, edited out scenes that included LGBT representation...

While our cinematic landscape is changing for the better in terms of onscreen diversity for previously unrepresented groups, particularly women and people of color, there still exists a noticeable vacuum when it comes to LGBT representation in modern mainstream cinema.

In fact, more than simply not including Queer characters from the get-go, many films of late have pro-actively been removing them in the editing room. Most notably, two of Marvel's recent outings Thor: Ragnarok and Black Panther both originally had acknowledgments of LGBT characters only for them to be cut from the final edit.

There are also franchises that have long promised LGBT representation but failed to do so textually on screen, recent examples being Star Wars with Solo: A Star Wars Story co-writer Jon Kasdan revealing outside of the film that Lando Calrissian is pansexual and Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, which will not depict its antagonist and protagonist as queer despite the two being former lovers and that element playing an integral part in their dynamic.

Now, you can add J.A.Bayona's Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom to the listIn a recent interview with Yahoo! Entertainment, Daniella Pineda, who plays Dr. Zia Rodriguez in the film, detailed a scene that would have revealed her character to be a lesbian, which was left on the cutting room floor.

I look at Chris and I'm like; "Yeah, square jaw, good bone structure, tall, muscles. I don't date men, but if I did, it would be you. It would gross me out, but I'd do it." I love that I'm looking at Chris Pratt, the hottest guy in the world, and I'm like, "It would gross me out, but I guess I would do it!" It was also cool, because it was a little insight into my character. But they cut it.

While the manner in which this information is given may be seen as problematic to some, the reason Pineda gives for the removal is even more so and also typical when it comes to cut LGBT representation in cinema as The Originals actress explained that the moment was cut because it was deemed not “relevant to the story".

This is often the reason given and serves to do little more than exhaust a community who are constantly told that the acknowledgment of their existence in a film is "extra" or "needless" unless the entirety of the movie is built around that. It's obvious that we still have a ways to go before LGBT individuals are be able to exist in all forms of media without being deemed political or forced and not just permitted in depressing adult dramas about how their lives are a struggle due to their identity.

Still, with this summer's Love, Simon delivering one of the best romantic comedies in recent years and centered around a gay main character, that landscape might be slowly changing too.

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom is in cinemas now.

They want the movie to make money don't they

@MasterMix - Yeah...because one throwaway line Fromm a side character would cost the movie millions, I'm sure..
mastakilla39
mastakilla39 - 6/20/2018, 11:11 AM
@Rpendo - It would for conservative countries. Beauty and the beast had scenes with Josh Gad and Luke Evans cut, edited, or re-dubbed in other countries to be less gay.

Can we stop this crap yet? We dont need to include everyone, or make a role just to highlight LGBTBBQWTFEVER. If the character fits, it fits, if it doesnt it doesnt. And how would that line have made sense with the film, its a line that really isnt needed to push the story forward. This is the cancer of intersectionality

@Gizmoduck - I used to think like that kinda still do but the bigger point is from the other side is whys it cut for not serving the story if it’s such a minor point the movie doesn’t have to revolve around it but if it’s inconsequential to the movie why cut it? They leave a lot of other things in that are inconsequential and needless

noahthegrand - 6/20/2018, 10:49 AM
@Gizmoduck - still, when you take the population of earth and pick out 3.8 percent, it is a lot of people. Like a very large number of people. In my daily life I see lgbt+ people all the time, maybe it’s because I’m young and have a lot of friends, but I meet lgbt people all the time.

@noahthegrand - actually on a global perspective, the percentage of LGBTETC will drop tremendously. There’s a bigger world out there. And they pay for the movies.

Not saying I agree with this for every movie (although The Jurassic franchise is aimed particular at younger people so I’m happy it wasn’t there), but you need to take into consideration that if a movie is out to make money (and it is, studios are not charities) they have to appeal to wider sensibilities.

@noahthegrand @tunasmelt - majority rules and always had. just because some countries let people mutilate themselves and allow them to choose their own gender or recognize homosexuals doesn't mean everyone has to accept it. 3% loss is more justifiable than a 97% loss don't ya think?

@ShimmyShimmyYA - When you have a movie, and your feedback says that it feels too long, and you are tasked with making cuts to the film, without sacrificing pacing, do you cut an action scene, a scene that explains an important plot point, or a throwaway joke from a minor character?
CaptainElrond
CaptainElrond - 6/20/2018, 11:35 AM
@Gizmoduck - Yeah...i was actually semi agreeing with your point, but apparently my joke comment triggered people and was filling up the thread.
ShimmyShimmyYA
ShimmyShimmyYA - 6/20/2018, 2:20 PM
@RealNimbus - I completely under that I’m just saying there’s unnecessary stuff still left in those movies even with all the cuts I understand both sides of the issue. If I was personally writing if a character is gay then ok I’m neither gonna draw attention to it or take away from it unless it’s crucial to the plot. People are upset though because what’s the point in bringing it up if you cut it out the movie anyway it sounds disingenuous is all

@Gizmoduck - You just gave the reason why all this hubbub about LGBT representation being necessary is hypocritical at its finest.

Seems like a nice lady but her character is a little annoying in the film.

Still better than the nerdy guy though.....god i wish he was eaten.
Mjolnir215
Mjolnir215 - 6/20/2018, 10:36 AM
What a character chooses to do in the privacy of their bedroom has nothing to do with the plot.
So it’s unnecessary to have a character in a film that’s gay just to have them there.
noahthegrand
noahthegrand - 6/20/2018, 10:44 AM
@Mjolnir215 - it adds to the character. And in movies we see stuff that would be private all the time so I don’t see what your problem is.
TheBigLebowski
TheBigLebowski - 6/20/2018, 11:18 AM
@noahthegrand - It doesn't, really. Sexuality doesn't equate character, and I feel like having flat side characters defined by their sexuality instead of personality does no favors to people they represent. Moreso, just putting the film to a hault to have this minor character essentially turn to the camera and explain to the audience: "by the way, I'm a lesbian ;)" seems like a sleazy studio attempt at pleasing sjws and the LGBT community instead of a genuine gesture of diversity. It would be fine if Chris Pratt was gay and had a male love interest, since that Owen/Claire relationship is a major part of the story anyway (but that won't happen, it wouldn't be good for the Chinese markets, now would it).
noahthegrand
noahthegrand - 6/20/2018, 11:27 AM
@TheBigLebowski - it isn’t explaining to the audience. It seems to be a joke line, and in a movie with comedy elements it could have worked:,
BB8ANG
BB8ANG - 6/20/2018, 2:11 PM
@Mjolnir215 - Do you also think that Jake Johnson's character in the first one should have been taken out? We're you taking to the comments to explain why they should have removed the main teen's scenes expressing his sexuality in the first one? What do you have an issue with really? Characters expressing their sexuality or the inclusion of sexualities other than your own?

Who says this? One of my roommates is gay (and has a real sense of humor) and I can't imagine her saying anything like this. Its a BAD line.

You couldn't come up with soemthing better to illustrate or hint at the character's sexuality?
