Charlie Hunnam Is Hoping For Fewer Visual Effects And More Focus On Story In PACIFIC RIM 2

Fans of the visually stunning Pacific Rim were happy to learn they would be receiving more of the same in a sequel due in 2017. However, Charlie Hunnam, would like to see more focus on story

It's hard to gauge whether the first Pacific Rim movie was a success or not. Financially, the movie did fine, taking in over $411 million at the global box office - which was clearly enough to convince Legendary Pictures to greenlight a sequel, anyway. However, while it did provide great entertainment value (in the form of monstrous kaijus battling giant robots), there were elements of the movie's story that didn't sit particularly well with some audiences and critics alike.

While talking to EW about his next role in Guy Ritchie's King Arthur, Pacific Rim star Charlie Hunnam acknowledged these narrative issues, and claimed he'd like to see the sequel rein in some of the special effects, and instead put more focus on story and character.

"When it becomes very technical, those technical aspects create a rigidity to the process. Then all of the sudden, you have to find where your little place to fit into that process is, as opposed to the whole thing being about you... I think world creation and monster creation and all of that stuff is exciting as a secondary element of storytelling. When it becomes more important than storytelling, I get very nervous, and you sort of lose me a little bit."

"Although we tried very hard on Pacific Rim to marry those two elements, I do feel like ultimately it got weighed heavier on the side of spectacle than storytelling.
Not to say I wasn’t proud of the film. I really liked it, and I felt like it delivered exactly what it was supposed to. But I do feel like we could have maybe plumbed the depths of the character and the storytelling a little bit more."

Some may argue that these sorts of movies were only designed to be 'mindless entertainment'. However, given Guillermo del Toro's prowess as a filmmaker, and the film's exciting concept, it shouldn't be too much to ask for an engaging story to accompany the visual brilliance onscreen. Throw in the fact that the existence of Hellboy III seemingly hinges on the success of Pacific Rim 2, and comic book movie fans should all be hoping for a fantastic sequel!

Pacific Rim 2 is scheduled to hit theatres August 4, 2017.

Well Pacific Rim was awesome because of the special effects, action, and over the top characters. It was NOT because of the story, PR is purely a spectacle piece and it does that way better than most summer blockbuster movies.

He peaked with Green Street Hooligans.

Is Hunnam actually confirmed to be coming back for the sequel?

I read a comment a little while back about how the biggest problem with Pacific Rim was that Hunnam's character was the lead, rather than Mako. Not only was she a much more interesting character, but it would've made more narrative sense since she was the one who actually had an arc. Instead of having Hunnam and his brother be the opening of the entire movie (the whole subplot with his brother dying really gets dropped pretty early on anyway), imagine if Mako's flashback as a little girl was our first introduction to that world and then we only later find out about Hunnam's brother when they drift together.

Despite that, I still really enjoyed the movie. At worst, the character work and story itself is a bit forgettable. But in terms of action and visuals, it was incredible.

Man, I love everything about this scene. So moody, so atmospheric, and it just has so much weight to it, even when it's completely out of context.

Also, this piece was tough to write without editorializing it slightly - something I usually try to avoid. If it feels like I've thrown my opinion in it too much, my apologies :L

@DrDoom Haha! Wilding won't like that comparison at all...

But yeah, it's sort of like how in Mad Max, Furiosa was pretty much the main character. I totally see your point, but I just wish GDT would've made it more "official" that Mako was the lead, instead of having the movie bookended by a flashback to Raleigh's past and then ending it with him saving the day completely by himself. That ending also bothered me...it went 100% against the entire damn theme of the film, which was about teamwork and uniting in the face of bigger threats.

I'm still pretty psyched about the sequel though.

Nope. Keep the visual effects.

Charlie is right. It's insensitive to use cgi when we have all of these out of work monsters and robots, just looking for something to do.

The ungodly stupid concept that two pilots had to dance around next to eachother side by side Dance Dance Revolution style was so lame.

Couldn't even stand to rent the film.

Pacific Rim Is purely meant for fun and a hint if campiness. Idk about him wanting more story. It's the repitome of a summer popcorn dum down blockbuster and I love that

The first one sucked BECAUSE of its focus on stories and VERY annoying and shitty main characters (ironically the supporting characters were WORLDS away better) and not focused on the MONSTERS VS [frick]ING ROBOT story that most people went to see it for.

@Pathogen it must have been footage of their training run, their Jaeger seems a bit wobbly.

Pacific Rim is like an action anime, very boring and a little dumb when nobody is fighting. People watch this things exclusively for the eye candy.

I miss the 80s action movies, is annoying how everybody wants to transform simple hero adventures in social commentaries and character studies. This is a monsters vs robots movie, please stop trying to make sense.

Focusing more on the story and characters would be great, as long as he does a better job of acting.

Wish they hadn't killed Idris off in this one, would have liked to seen his character in the sequel.

Right...right...because they can worry about the special effects needed to make 'giant robots'! fighting 'giant monsters'! later.

OK, I'm definitely with him on the story thing...for sure for any movie. However if there's any movie dependent of spectacular CGI, it's this one. So brother Benicio, let's please not do the opposite and end up with Shakespeare but have the special effects look like 1950's Godzilla. Muchas Gracias mi karnal!

If only Godzilla would have given us the level of beast battles this did. I wasn't a huge fan of Pacific Rim, but Godzilla broke my heart pulling away from the city crushing monster fights not once, but twice, to follow the less interesting human story arch. Know you role. Story needs to be there and be tight, but come on Charlie. This is all about the kaiju.

What I've always liked about Del Toro is he swings for the fences. He doesn't play it safe and takes chances. Sometimes they just don't work well, but he won't change and that's a good thing. The studio gave him some more money I'm interested in seeing what he does with it.
