According to Deadline, Gareth Edwards has dropped out of directing the sequel to his Godzilla reboot. Apparently Edwards, who is currently hard at work on Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, stepped away in order to pursue some of his own smaller projects, but word is the departure from Legendary and Warner Bros. was an amicable one.

Godzilla 2 was recently given a new release date of March 22, 2019, but Edwards and the studio had agreed to the split prior to this announcement.

Warners and Legendary will now begin the search for a replacement, while also focusing on their planned Godzilla Vs Kong movie, which has been set for May 20, 2020 release.

He should do the Green Lantern Corps movie or The Flash because one of them needs a director.

I enjoyed how GodZilla got the JAWS treatment. Less was more.
But for the Sequel I would like to see a new version of Big G. A bit more Toned up. He seemed to big/fat/bulky. What's the right word?

@IronGenesis - The Jaws comparison is SO wrong. It made Jaws great because : A) they didn't know where the shark was B) it built tension and C) even the non-shark stuff was great.

It failed completely in Godzilla because A) they were following Godzilla the whole movie, they always knew where he was B) it didn't build tension because half the rest of the movie is just the MUTOs destroying stuff and C) every single second of that movie that includes neither Godzilla nor Cranston is unwatchable.

@IronGenesis - The difference with Jaws, Jurassic Park, Alien and other movies with a slow tease/burn is that Godzilla didn't have any strong or interesting characters to keep us entertained.

Shame. He was passionate about the movie. The human parts of it (with the exception of Cranston and Watanabe) really did hurt the film, but he nailed the monster aspects.

I'll wait to see how Rouge One turns out before he gets 100% of my support, but I'd be interested in him helming a superhero flick. He's got a unique eye for visuals that I particularly enjoy.

Well, the only good parts of that film was every minute Bryan Cranston was in it (which was like 15 min) and the 30 seconds of Godzilla fighting and killing the one winged MUTO
