According to Tuesday's announcement, Universal Studios have officially taken Pacific Rim 2 off their release calendar. Guillermo Del Toro's sequel film was originally scheduled to hit theaters Aug. 4, 2017, but now Universal has replaced it with Pitch Perfect 3, which was originally set to come out on July 21, 2017.

When it was revealed that Pacific Rim 2 was delayed indefinitely, people began to wonder if the sequel would ever become a possibility. Del Toro (while talking with EW) revealed that the project wasn't dead, it just needed time to sort out some things. However, it seems as though Legendary and Universal still haven't come to an agreement yet, therefore this film is removed off of their release calendar.

Universal's official statement on the situation is below.

“Legendary and Universal Pictures are committed to having Pacific Rim 2, the sequel to 2013’s Pacific Rim, which generated more $411 million at the global box office, be the vanguard, fully-immersive experience that the franchise deserves. To this end, the decision was made to delay the production and release of Pacific Rim 2 so that the creative team can continue in its efforts to exceed the amazing experience of the first film.”

So, it seems as though Universal is still strong on finishing the project. What's your take on all this? Share your thoughts in the comment section below!

It sounds like Universal is still doing it but they're pushing it back to 2018.

You know, for being the highest grossing studio this year (before Star Wars comes out), Universal sure are a bunch of pussies when it comes to funding projects that aren't Fast and the Furious.
