Hasbro CEO Confirms Plans For More POWER RANGERS Movies In The Future

While the recent Lionsgate-backed Power Rangers movie was far from a box office hit, it looks like Hasbro, who recently acquired the entire franchise, has plans to bring the heroes back to the big screen.

Despite a strong opening weekend, Lionsgate's Power Rangers reboot failed to make its mark at the worldwide box office last year and ultimately finished its run with an extremely underwhelming $142.3 million ($85.3M domestic; $56.9M foreign) on a reported $100 million production budget. While sequel talks did seem to resume after the film debuted on Blu-ray, those talks quickly fizzled and the focus quickly shifted back to the hit television series and the upcoming 25th Anniversary celebration.

After that, Saban remained fairly quiet on the Power Rangers front until this past February when it was reported that Hasbro had acquired the master toy license for the franchise. Then, the whole situation got a whole lot more interesting when the top toy company announced last month that they had acquired the entire Power Rangers franchise, including the film & tv rights, from Saban Entertainment for $522 million.

Since the deal isn't expected to be finalized until the end of this month, there hasn't really been much information regarding the future of the franchise. However, while speaking at the Hasbro Strategic Decisions Conference on Thursday, Hasbro Inc. CEO Brian Goldner shared the following statement in regards to the company's high-profile acquisition of the Power Rangers franchise and their plans moving forward. “The fact that we can acquire Power Rangers brand and plug and play that right into our strategy where we activate it in entertainment, motion pictures in the future and then of course across toys and games and consumer products and do so globally. We felt the brand was very under leveraged and undervalued. We feel we can exploit it to a much greater extent and it was a great opportunity to acquire the brand.”

While continuing the series on television is likely a given, it appears that we've finally received confirmation that Hasbro does intend to bring the colorful heroes back to the big screen sooner than later, but it remains to be seen whether it will be a continuation of the most recent film or if it'll be an entirely new set of heroes embarking on an all-new cinematic adventure. However, considering that Hasbro does have a highly lucrative partnership with Paramount Pictures, it seems increasingly unlikely that fans will get a true sequel to the Dean Israelite-directed film that was backed by Lionsgate. With the little information we have at the moment, a reboot seems more probable.

The first one played it pretty much by the book but laid a solid foundation. Bring in Tommy, have him as the villain, and see where it can take you.

Side note: I see some similarities with Tommy and venom.

what a joke of a movie the last one was.

starts off with a jerking off a cow joke. hahahahahahahaha then the most ridiculous teen drama ever till the last 20 mins where the power rangers movie starts. and a couple mins into getting the suits they wear no face visors for the rest of the movie. when the megazord transforms for the brief amount of time it is in the movie it trips immediately as a joke.

cant believe the original pink and green ranger actors wanted to cameo in the ending of this thing.

terrible movie period.

even tf5 the last knight was better.

A new reboot with the producers of Pacific Rim 2 and Rinko Kikuchi playing Rita Repulsa.

@BloodyBed - I like some moments that remind the Power Rangers. The final battle, for example.

@Repian - besides a few action shots, I thoroughly hated it.

The teenage actors reeeeeeally rubbed me the wrong way.

I had no idea the movie focused on kids, or I definitely wouldn’t have seen it.

@BloodyBed - In the case of Power Rangers, focusing on kids is a plus point.

I'm totally cool with this. I still believe that the Power Rangers have a LOT of potential to do extremely well on the silver screen if handled correctly.

The film released last year wasn't bad but it was just neutral. It took wayyyy too long for the team to become rangers and Rita Repulsa was just whack, same for Goldon. (If that's the correct spelling) I don't think that the heart was truly felt in that film. I'd hate to say it but the 90's movie costumes were way better than the ones we got in the film. No Iron Man repulsor

i liked the movie from last year, but yeah this may be a chance to do it better. Tho i hope they keep the cast, i loved the cast and their chemistry tho i get it if they wish to reboot, anyway i hope for the best i am one of the few who believes Power Rangers has great potential for the silver screen lol

Power Rangers has so much potential on the big screen, but the Lionsgate movie was a massive letdown. It wasn't Power Rangers so much as it was a bunch of kids get trained to fight an approaching threat and get given alien armour to fight in. It deviated way too much from what Power Rangers is. A Power Rangers movie should be a love letter to the TV show. Just look at Boom Studios comic! It has immense success because it's simply a serious, more mature take on the television show. I'm quite glad Saban and Lionsgate will have nothing to do with any future Power Rangers movie, the clearly don't know how to make it work. They distanced themselves from the TV series so much that it backfired.

I always assumed this was the case. That last movie didn’t make too much at the box office but it sure did sell some toys and that a toy company owns them they are poised to really profit off any movie. I doubt it’s a sequel though. Hasbro has that deal with Paramount so I bet they will make a new series and maybe even connected to their Hasbro universe of films.

That last one took itself way too seriously. For PR to work, they have to embrace how [frick]ing stupid it always was.
