For many of us growing up, the Power Rangers were the original superhero team - do-gooders fighting crime and evil space aliens, whilst trying to lead an ordinary life.

Of course, the show was anything but ordinary. In addition to being one of the only live-action superhero series around, it is also one of the first and only series to address hot topics such as diversity, multicturilsm, religion, love, bullying, even drugs, in an easy-to-understand children's TV format.

This past weekend, after 16 years, 17 seasons and 700 episodes, the long-running series came to an end, as Power Rangers R.P.M. (the then-current season) had its big finale, which also acted as the series finale.

Kind of.

Instead of continuing the series with another season, Disney and BanDai have opted to take some time-out. Of course, unlike Hasbro and the Transformers brand, these guys have absolutely no desire to kill their multi-million dollar franchise and annoy their loyal fans.

So instead, Disney have only just gone back to the original masters, and remastered Mighty Morphin Power Rangers (the 1993 season) in glorious HD.

This is a pretty big deal: very few primetime series get the luxury of being remastered in today's economy, let alone children's series. There are many rumours circulating the web that Disney have added CGI enhancements to the series, similar to CBS's remastering of Star Trek, but I'm doubtful. Either way, I'm sure MMPR 2.0 will keep fans happy between now and whenever the show returns from its break.

The action kicks off with a double-bill (in HD!) this Saturday morning/afternoon on ABC. Check local listings for exact times.

I'll be posting a review or opinion piece each week, as well as reviewing past series highlights (feel free to suggest episodes in the comments!).

Did it really last 16 years? Where have I been for 15 years? Honestly I was never a fan of the series, but kudos to the producers for keeping the fans they had all those years.

Lee777@ your new avatar is freaking me the hell out, man. Original series rocked, but to me it didn't hold up in the test of time catagory. Much like the Tick and the original TMNT series.

It's good that MMPR exists because it will give future generations an opportunity to look back in history and pinpoint the precise time at which our civilization began its humiliating decline.

MMPR sucked. It was the beginning of the end of cartoons (yeah, I know it's live action, but ...) even having any shread of intelligence or relevance. Bad acting and fight sequences, cheap Japaneese costumes, cheesy voice overs and bad action sequences in rubber costumes. Give me GIJOE/Autobots vs. Cobra/Decepticons and red vs. blue lasers anyday. Good ridance.

When your a kid everything seems cool, but as I got older I started to realize just how much this show sucked. I wondered when it would finally end, too bad they're not putting the nail on the coffin with this one. 'Nuff said.

@LEEE, it had the TMNT in it? do you have an episode number? lol i'd like to check that out to say that i've seen it.

This show was a pivitol point in my life. lol not ashamed. looking back, it was poorly acted; however, it was the best acted out of all the series

17 seasons? No way. Although, every now and then I'll be walking through target and I'll see some toys of Power Rangers Time Force or Power Rangers Light Speed or Power Rangers MVP or whatever.

@The Answer: I think the original Red is in gay porn now, but what happened to Pink?

jusme6 - 12/29/2009, 6:51 AM
@DTLSinger: lol!

I love how everything played to steriotypes. The one guy with glasses was a total geek/wimp. The pink ranger is a white cheerleader. The one Asian is the "yellow" ranger. The one black guy is a cool dancer, a real smooth talker, the "black" ranger, and his dinosaur is an elephant. The leader is a tall athletic white guy who's not very smart and shouts everything he says. Way to teach kids to judge people based on their appearance Bandi!

I used to fight with a kid at school over which show was better, Power Rangers or X-Men. Both shows were fun, but X-Men was number one for me.

Like most, I liked this show as a kid, and then grew up to realize how gay it was. And at 16 years, it's long overstayed it's welcome. I mean, How many times can they show people jumping in the air with explosions behind them? How many times can they show horrible kung fu fighting with the main characters shouting "Hiya!" every five seconds? At 16 years, thank goodness it's over

When Power Rangers R.P.M. series being shown? I was looking to see the series on Disney, but it never aired. To be honest, I was glad not to see Power Rangers R.P.M. and I'm thankful that the Power Rangers series is over. I would give this three cheers. HURRY! HURRY! HURRY! IT'S OVER!
