It's Morphin' Time!

The Hollywood Reporter has learned today that Paramount Pictures and Hasbro are in the very early stages of development on a brand new Power Rangers movie with Jonathan Entwistle (The End of the F---ing World) eyed to direct and Patrick Burleigh (Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway) penning the script.

The new film will be a hard reboot of the franchise, meaning, as expected, it will not be a continuation of the 2017 live-action film from Lionsgate, which grossed approximately $142 million on an estimated $100 million production budget.

While plot details are being kept locked away at the Command Center for now, the film is said to involve time-travel and will see the teenagers with attitude transported back to the 1990s - coincidentally the golden age of the franchise - where they'll have to work together to find a way to get back to the present. This is also likely where we'll see them obtain their powers and meet the villain of the picture.

With a '90s setting, it remains to be seen whether the new movie will tie into any of the Zordon-era series, namely the original Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, but it's a possibility that can't be ruled out just yet.

apparently it involves time travel to the 90's, which seems kinda forced just by hearing it. but hey, not many things are worthy of 90's nostalgia pandering as is MMPR.

@Spidey91 - I know a lot of people like me that love the original MMPR but kind of fell off after the new team showed up. The original MMPR, even before the green ranger, is the heart and soul of the franchise. Even if we don’t see the original actors but the original team in suits with megazords with updated graphics could be awesome. Or show up when the Jason is the Armored Red ranger, that would be the seeet spot.
I understand people hesitation about time travel but to see the original suits and zords could be awesome. I’m just not judging before even a trailer has come out.

Off-topic: watched 6 Underground. Holy shit, was that bad!

Now finally getting around to watching the Dumbo remake because I'm a masochist (and for the novelty of two Penguins acting together).

As a huge fan of the original show and the recent movie that was fairly decent, this sounds terrible

Why not just do a CW show with the original cast? That would be cooler than whatever the hell this time travel stuff is. Seriously, travelling back in time to the 90s? Who thought that sounded like a good idea?

@MisterFreeze77 - Well one of the original cast is dead, and two of them do not get along that well. If you mean the reboot cast, I guess it could work, probably wouldn't be much megazord action though and would have to have a shorter episode count, similar to Legends of tomorrow

@dracula - why though? Power Rangers is still running. Is there really a reson to have a second show running at the same time with fewer effects due to it being fully American made without sentai footage?

@shadowspider9 - just seems unlikely. At least part of the reason power rangers has lasted for so long is that they save money by using the japanese footage. Plus the toy sales.

@dracula - Yeah I meant the reboot cast. I should've put that there. My apologies

I still dont get why this couldn't be a soft reboot of the 2017 movie. Sure it may not have been the best, but it got the attention of the fans (huge hurdle for any adaptation), did reasonably well considering how other similar projects ended up, and had bryan cranston as zordon. It certainly wasnt perfect, but a soft reboot can fix the issues it has (you can get a new cast if necessary and new suits can be justified by upgrades in technology) and can start directly with the green ranger arc, one of the most well known stories in the entire franchise and introduces the most popular character.

@Origame - didn't the rights change hands? That's probably why
Origame
Origame - 12/13/2019, 6:03 PM
@MyCoolYoung - well Hasbro owns the franchise now. But when they got the rights, they mentioned they were considering a sequel instead of a reboot. And these talks were going on for a while so clearly it wasnt a rights issue.

And even if it wasnt, a soft reboot still wouldn't be out of the question. After all, most of the plot details about the original are owned by hasbro anyway. And again, the benefits of continuing the franchise in some way just makes more strategic sense.

@Origame - I liked the cast so I wouldn't be mad if they went the way of a soft reboot. They're just keen on making this happen I guess

It would be great a movie in which the Power Rangers of the original Show exist and that Jason David Frank (Tommy) returns as the father of a new Rangers.
