BOX OFFICE: STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS Finally Crosses $100 Million In North America

It took three days longer than expected, but Star Trek Into Darkness has now passed $100 million domestically. However, with a Memorial Day weekend which includes the release of Fast & Furious 6 and The Hangover Part III, it won't hold on to #1 for much longer...

Despite a 3D conversion, Star Trek Into Darkness took almost the exact same amount of time as 2009's Star Trek to surpass $100 million at the North American box office. It was originally thought that the sequel would surpass this number by last Sunday, especially as it opened early on Wednesday in IMAX screens. Regardless, the film took $5.33 million yesterday, which gives it a current domestic total of $103.77 million. This weekend will see both Fast & Furious 6 and The Hangover Part III hit screens across the country, although it's thought that the former will dominate with upwards of $85 million. As these films roll out internationally as well (Fast & Furious 6 had the second highest opening of 2013 in the UK last week), they will more than likely make a large dent in Star Trek Into Darkness' overseas takings, so a third instalment is from from guaranteed at this point despite a strong opening so far outside the US. Stay tuned for further updates.

When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis. With a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction. As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his crew.

Chris Pine as Captain James T. Kirk
Zachary Quinto as Spock
Benedict Cumberbatch as John Harrison
Alice Eve as Dr. Carol Marcus
Karl Urban as Dr. Leonard "Bones" McCoy
Zoe Saldana as Nyota Uhura
Anton Yelchin as Pavel Chekov

:( god damn it. To think people will actually go watch Hangover instead of this. Fast 6 is at least dumb fun.

Star Trek deserves more.

Oh, stop this already.

The film's doing good, why is everyone writing like it bombed? It missed expectations but is far from a failure, and will make good profits for the studio.

I'm pretty sure we'll see Star Trek 3.

[frick]ing LOVED it. Period.

This is the second Star Trek film that I watched (first one was the '09 Star Trek) and by far my favorite. I think what really made my experience watching Star Trek Into Darkness was watching it with my old man. Seeing him enjoying the film and telling me how muh it brings back memories watching the Star Trek series as a kid really made it an amazing time watching STID. :)

star trek has never done huge box office numbers. This will prob do between 200 and 250 domestic and another 300-400 internationallly. to make it the most succesful of the franchise and it would give it similar box office performance to IM1 and IM2. Stop spinning the result like its doing badly as that is good results

JJ said the Millennium Falcon can beat the Enterprise in a dog fight . . . lol! That right there is the reason JJ should have nothing to do with Star Trek. [frick] off JJ.

I think the studio feels that if ID does less than ST09, then a STIII will do less than this. Which is fine, just lower the budget a tad on the third picture. Some of the best TOS films were the ones with smaller budgets (STII, STVI).

Sorry tonytony but Star Trek will not perform better internationally. No one said it is doing badly but it has not met expectations. Stop being a blind fanboy. JJ has lost the heart of what makes Star Trek what it is. He has created a beautiful spectacle and one worth seeing multiple times but...

Star Trek works better in the hands of true science fiction writers and on the small screen.

Its such a shame that audiences prefer another worthless Hangover sequel over this. This movie deserves alot more.
Ill admit i liked Fast Five and ill soon check out Fast 6 but too many sequels is overkill for me.

Dont know why people seem to think that Star Trek is Star Wars, as I've said many times it never can and never will be. It will never be an 800 mil franchise. This is what happens when people let their expectations get out of hand.

Though on the contrary it probably would have opened better if it came out in 2011 or last year why they waited 4 years i'll never know. Also shouldn't have been wedged inbetween the likes of Iron Man 3, Fast 6 and The Hangover 3.

@Mike89

fast 6 is a very entertaining movie, better than all of the films except fast 5

@parissun I disagree with you. The first star trek was a terrific interpretation of star trek on the big screen and made believers of lots of people.
To be honest this star trek felt a bit removed from that but its still a decent watch. and factually speaking I am confident at the end of its domestic run it will do 200- 250 mil domestic and 350-mil international. which would put it on par with the performance of the first two iron man movies.

this movie is not a flop at all, not sure why people are responding like it is.

i do feel it deserves better. its a better film than Iron man 3 was.

The release date was off a little bit. no time to gain traction.

star trek into darkness had a budget of $190,000,000 it has currently made $178,946,262,if it makes between $450-$500,000,000 that should be enough for a third movie.

fingers crossed it does,it could be one of the best trilogies.
Ryguy88
Ryguy88 - 5/23/2013, 1:15 PM
I don't think CaptainSpain understands how profits work for movies.

Simple rule of thumb is that the movie needs to gross double its budget world wide to break even. If Star Trek can gross about $400M world wide it'll break even. If it makes $500M world wide it'll bring in a solid profit.

STID is a JOKE, a BAD TASTE JOKE. 3 plotters AND FOUR YEARS for making a mindless supermix of TOS´s space seed +STII+ST NEMESIS, typical Abrams product- COPYNG AND PASTING. Not original at all

ABRAMS turns the most intelligent sci fi show ever into GIJOE.

in ROTTEN TOMATOES a lot of critics are pure MARKETING, pal

THIS IS HOLLYWOOD.

seriously, 86% is a score for a masterpiece, not for a popcorn movie...
CaptainSpain
CaptainSpain - 5/23/2013, 1:32 PM
RYGUY,

STID 190 millions -budget + 100 millions marketing<290.

If STID earns 220 millions in USA, it means, - 70 millions in USA...and not including TAXES....

HUGE FAIL STID.

captain spain the 1st star trek film grossed just shy of 400mil this is almost half way there in a week. I guarantee at the end of its run, it will have grossed about 600-650 mil. which should be enough to greenlight an epic third movie.
