Cameras began rolling on Star Trek: Discovery last week, and CBS All Access has released our very first behind-the-scenes look at the upcoming small screen return to the final frontier.

Though none of the main cast are featured, we do get a few intriguing glimpses of some ship concept designs, alien makeup, a brief hint at how the new uniforms will look, and finally a shot of the redesigned captain's chair. Check out the video along with an official press release below:

Star Trek, one of the most iconic and influential global television franchises, returns to television 50 years after it first premiered with STAR TREK: DISCOVERY. The series will feature a new ship, new characters and new missions, while embracing the same ideology and hope for the future that inspired a generation of dreamers and doers. The series will premiere on the CBS Television Network with all subsequent episodes available on CBS All Access, the Network’s digital subscription video on demand and live streaming service, and will be distributed concurrently by CBS Studios International on Netflix in 188 countries and in Canada on Bell Media’s Space channel and OTT service CraveTV.

STAR TREK: DISCOVERY is produced by CBS Television Studios in association with Alex Kurtzman’s Secret Hideout, Bryan Fuller’s Living Dead Guy Productions and Roddenberry Entertainment. Alex Kurtzman, Bryan Fuller, Heather Kadin, Gretchen J. Berg & Aaron Harberts, Akiva Goldsman, Rod Roddenberry and Trevor Roth serve as executive producers.

Star Trek: Discovery will star Sonequa Martin-Green in the lead role, as well as James Frain (Sarek), Doug Jones (Lt. Saru), Anthony Rapp (Lt. Stamets), Michelle Yeoh (Starfleet Captain Georgiou), and Shazad Latif as a Klingon officer named Kol.

Love the Blue.
Looks like a natural progression from

ST: Enterprise to ST: The Original Series

A Klingon Officer? I thought Worf was the first Klingon to join Starfleet or is this Klingon not a Starfleet Officer.

The cast sounds pretty good. I've never been much of a trekkie when it comes to the shows, but loved the movies.

Hmmm. I want to watch this, I've never really watched a Star Trek series before, but I don't know, a whole streaming service for one show, maybe if I had watched The Good Wife. Maybe once they have other shows that interest me.

Not really into Star Trek but is this supposed to take place after the 3rd one?

@TheRealMandarin - different timeline...this takes place 10 years before the Original series, the movies are an alternate timeline/universe.

I only started enjoying Star Trek after watching the original series on Netflix a year ago. I'm excited for this, yet sceptical. I'm not sure how long it will last since probably only a low number of people will pay for the service. I won't be. I'll be checking it out online like I do everything else.

Please be the new Next Gen and not the new Enterprise.

I will give it a go, but I really dislike the ship design. The one we see in 3D Blueprint Form looked a lot better.

Okay... against better judgement I'm starting to get excited.
