GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Star Chris Pratt Reflects On Failed AVATAR And STAR TREK Auditions

Chris Pratt became a bona fide action star in Hollywood after starring in Zero Dark Thirty and Guardians of the Galaxy, but he's now reflected on failed auditions for Avatar and Star Trek. Check it out...

While Guardians of the Galaxy star Chris Pratt frequently stole the show in Parks and Recreation, the actor didn't exactly appear to be what many would consider "leading man" material. However, after being cast in Zero Dark Thirty, Pratt underwent a physical transformation that broke the internet and suddenly put him on the radar of major studios.

That's seemingly the power of a six-pack in Hollywood, and while there was never a real reason why Pratt shouldn't have been considered for big roles, losing that weight and getting fit helped transform the actor into an action star.

During an interview with Smartless (via SFFGazette.com), the Jurassic World Dominion star explains why a lack of self-confidence may have been his biggest issue for a time. As a result, Pratt ended up dropping the ball during auditions for both the Star Trek reboot and James Cameron's Avatar.

"I know I’ve made light of actors feeling rejection or whatever, but I didn’t come close [to getting the role]. In fact, I came, it was so not close that it was really demoralizing and made me actually truly question my potential or what I should be aiming for as an actor. For both of those," Pratt remembers. "I remember that the role was written like ‘He comes in,’ it was maybe the Avatar."

"I just remember reading this character description and it was like ‘he walks in and he has the it factor.’ So I was feeling, you know, a little bit overweight, I wasn’t really taking care of myself physically, I was in a relationship where we were, you know, drinking a lot," the actor continued. "I walked in, and I started sweating immediately, and it was a casting assistant. She just looked at me and she just pressed record and she just started doing her stuff while I was reading with her other casting assistant. I saw that there was literally nothing about my audition that was compelling at all."

While Pratt would miss out on those roles, he's since become the face of multiple franchises, including those we've mentioned above and the likes of The Tomorrow War and The Terminal List. After recently starring in the final chapter of the Jurassic World trilogy, the actor has The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 on the horizon.

I wanna see Chris do more serious grounded roles.

Gotg launched him into leading hero man but can we get a indie movie out of this man?💁

@AmazingFILMporg - I hope Terminal List is just that. I don't know the book, and although it feels action-based, I think this might up being a departure from the leading man stuff we've seen in him before

I remember his role in Zero Dark Thirty was pretty small but I believe that he got into shape prior to that because he also had landed the role as Star-Lord and was preparing to shoot that. And before that and even his comedic role in Parks and Recreation he was fit in the drama Everwood back on The CW.

IMO Guardians suits him best where he can mix his comedy chops and add depth as well, helps that James Gunn also knows how to write a script that lets the cast do that.

I gotta watch The Terminal List too.

He'll literally do any movie and that's the problem

@bobevanz - Considering those auditions happened before GOTG, he really wasn't in conditions to be picky.

"I was in a relationship where we were, you know, drinking a lot"

Why did he have to throw in this subtle dig at his ex? Why not just say I wasn't taking care of myself and was overweight and drinking without throwing shots?

@DalekCraigWasson - ikr, not like she had a gun to his head.. what a weak man shifting the blame. The more I know about this man, the less appealing he gets. Gross.

@DalekCraigWasson - but he didn't mention her name or anything. I think he was just stating he was in a mutually toxic relationship. I mean it looks just as bad for him as it would for her

@abd00bie - I don't see how he's shifting any blame. He said "we were drinking a lot". As in, they were both complicit in abusing alcohol because they weren't happy.

He'd be good as Jack Burton in a remake of Big Trouble in Little China.

Back around when I watched Parks and Rec, Lego Movie, and Guardians close together he was my favourite Chris for a short while. I even watched Jurassic World mainly because of him.

Nowadays he's the least of the Chrises for me. I hope I'll enjoy his further appearances as Star-Lord, but beyond that I can do without him.

Yeah I like him as Star-Lord, but he is NO Captain Kirk. Pine was good, but Shatner is the one and only.
