Is the new Star Trek cast, girly?

Is the new Star Trek cast, girly?

The first impression I thought of the new Kirk and Spock was, "Oh my God, they are...Girly?!"

I will never forget my facial expression when I first found out that they were making a new Star Trek movie redoing the original Star Trek. I remember telling my dad and he was equally excited.

So I waited and waited for the trailer with actual footage (not that lame trailer with the logo of Star Trek and saying coming 2009). I saw the trailer and was like oh NOOO, they chose the wrong actors to play Kirk and Spock...THEY ARE GIRLY. When I think of the original Kirk and Spock, I think of the man and vulcan...not girly man and vulcan with blush. I mean this was only first glance. I saw a movie with Chris Pine (who is playing Kirk) and I didnt think he was that good of an actor, but you know minds can change, even mine. Now the second trailer that came out I took back my "girly" complant and felt better that I saw Spock putting someone in a vulcan death grip, I felt a smile upon my face. Now I need to be convinced the Chris Pine can pull off Kirk.

You know I could just be a little paranoid because I want this movie done well...I mean really well. I won't to come from this movie and want to put it in my list of my favorite movies. I want my father and I to quote this movie for years to come, just like we do the original series. I have faith in the people of this film, for my sake I want at least 3 stars.

I would LOVE to be right there with ya on the "wanting to quote this movie..." and "...want to put it in my list of favorite movies."

But i'm not sure that's going to happen. I mean, I don't even know why the hell they're letting JJ Abrams REBOOT a franchise that actually DID WELL. Not just well, but REALLY WELL. I mean, 10 movies (6 original, 4 Next Gen) and they couldn't keep it going? I don't get it.

Now, that trailer (the real trailer) looks fantastic, and I have some decent hopes for this movie doing very well. I like JJ Abrams and I think this could be an awesome retelling of the series. I don't think it's going to spawn 9 sequels however. I don't even think they'll make 1 sequel, i'm seeing this as a completely stand alone movie. That's just how it strikes me.

As for casting choices...You're right, they did look awful "girly" to begin with...John Cho as Sulu? REALLY?! Yea, Harold and Kumar was funny...But Sulu? I don't think I like that very much. Maybe it's just me typecasting John Cho, oh well, I don't like it...Until I see it.

I don't know, I just don't see the point in rebooting something that has had SO much success. It's not like one of those 10 movie franchises (Freddy and Jason) where it got really goofy towards the latter parts, I think it just kept getting better and better. Generations was an AWESOME movie that tied the original cast to The Next Generation (my favorite) cast exquisitely. They took off from there and all 4 Next Gen movies are freakin' awesome. I would really like to know why they didn't keep that going...

I too, hope for this to be 3 stars, heck even 4 stars, 10/10, 2 thumbs up and "3 snaps in a Z formation", but I have my doubts. Not as many doubts as for GI Joe, but there's doubts. I just hope JJ does the franchise justice and doesn't make this a series killer.

Nice work ComicsMan.

It's been said time and again Star Trek isn’t trying to totally reboot the Trekverse just make the classic series accessible to a younger audience, and breathe new life into a dieing franchise.

Nowadays, the "younger audience" you are refering to doesn't give 2 shytes about the Trekverse. They want Bey Blade and whatever the hell those little fighting ball things that morph into creature like things are called. Bhudokan or some crap like that. I don't know. Goodness, I sound like i'm in my 60's or something; "damn whipper snappers get off my lawn" as I stand on my front porch in my underwear waving my cane at a couple of 10 year olds trying to play tag.

Anyway, if the younger audience is truly interested in the classic series then CHECK OUT THE CLASSIC SERIES. Don't just do a half-assed reboot to make it seem more likeable to the kiddies. Besides, the OC age group their going for here isn't going to see this movie. Ya know who is? The 25+ age group that grew up on this stuff and is enamored with it. Including the 52 yr old that lives in moms house (because she died and he inherited it and finally moved out of the basement) who have been watching the show for 40 years and won't let it go and who says "What the hell is this garbage? What have they done to you Uhura?!?!"

That's whos going to see this movie. I doubt almost completely, that any self respecting teenager is going to (with free will) fork over the cash to see this flick. I just don't see that happening. It's possibly the dorkiest set of fans ever to be created...Trekkies. No self-respecting teenager wants that stigma.

I have it, and I like it. So i'm going to see it. I'm not going to drag my woman or children along. Just me, and maybe my dad and brother. Because we like this stuff. But other than that, little kids, teenagers and 21 yr olds who don't know anything about Star Trek (which, nowadays is unbelievable, unless you live in a hovel) don't give a crap about this franchise, and probably never will. Unless you grew up watching this, or were introduced to it at some point in your life enough to follow along, I doubt you'd see it.

yep this movie is for the fans. I still can't wait.
YA they made a horrible choice for Sulu. I have a feeling that will be the only character that I will laugh at just b/c its the wrong actor to play Sulu.

I am glad Nimoy is there. He's freakin' awesome. Ya know, Nichele Nichols once said that she spoke to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and he was big fan of the show. I thought that was freakin' awesome. Martin Luther King Jr liked Star Trek, and Patrick Stewart digs Beavis and Butthead, freakin' sweet.

I fell in love with Trek two and a half years ago, with the old school Kirk. If they ruin this for me, I'll be so upset. I think their Spock will be good, but I'm pretty sure that new Kirk is going to suck more hardcore than a ship full of tribbles! Thats right....I took it there...

TRIBBLES! YaaaaaaaaaaY! God that sounds awful when I read it. The Trouble With Tribbles is classic. I'm not toally against the original show, it was absolutely groundbreaking, and is STILL a good show, even 40 years later. But TNG just cemented my fanhood for me.

Going to conventions in the late 80's Early 90's and meeting the casts of both shows plsu the movies was awesome. There are only a hand full of people I haven't met, including Shatner, Nimoy and Johnathan Frakes. But other than that, I actually got to spend time with a good portion of the casts. Most of them were pretty awesome people with the exception of Koenig, he's kind of odd, and Marina Sirtis, she was just a total douche nozzle. Couldn't have been more of a bitch if she tried. Whether that's just her demeanor and I was like 12 yrs old or whatever, but she just came off as snobb as can be. Ah the "perks" of having your dad be the "Captain" of the U.S.S. Columbus and doing security detail for old conventions here in the city. Was quite nice at the time. Then fans just got more and more wierd, so we stopped going. Oh well, it was fun while it lasted.

i have high hopes for the movie
i think Cho has some hidden talent that we are going to see come out, because the serious parts of Harold and Kumar were done very well and both of them are great actors (check out Kumar on House)

i would have to agree that this movie is also for the younger fans and new fans. I personally know people who hate Star Trek who want to see this movie for the simple fact of seeing whether it will be any good or make their hatred justified (to them). But it is obviously also for the fans, why else make it

however, from the trailer i got the impression that a lot of focus would be on Kirks early life, which sorry to say i dont really care about seeing. spock's maybe, but not Kirk's. I also think the choice for Scotty is brilliant and will be absolutely hilarious. Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz are two fantastic comedies.
