J.J. Abrams And Benedict Cumberbatch Talk 'John Harrison' In STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS

The director of next year's Star Trek Into Darkness talks in detail about John Harrison's role in the sequel, teasing a "horriffic attack" in London. Stars Chris Pine (James Kirk) and Harrison himself, Benedict Cumberbatch, also weigh in with their thoughts on the villain.

"In Benedict Cumberbatch we have a much more emotionally and intellectually challenging villain than we had in the last film," Star Trek Into Darkness director J.J. Abrams told Empire Magazine in a recent interview when asked about how 'John Harrison' will stand apart from what has come before. "Eric Bana did a great job, but Nero was a much simpler, raving sort of furious dude. The first movie was an origin story. The characters were all new to each other, so all they needed was a scary threat to face. It didn't need to be complex or nuanced. Just by default, given the number of characters and the structure of it, we could only go so deep. By necessity, it had to stop at a certain level. It had a ceiling. And now there is no ceiling."

As for what exactly we should expect from Benedict Cumberbatch's 'John Harrison' (despite him finally being given a name, speculation is still running rampant that the Sherlock star is in fact playing 'Khan'), the director had this to say about the character, making it clear just how evil a protagonist he'll make for the Enterprise crew. "He was within Starfleet and has now turned against the organisation and is hell-bent on revenge. He's responsible for a very violent, horrific attack in London and then one in the States. He believes he and others were wronged and is focused on destruction. He's an incredibly brilliant strategist who is aware of various truths that Kirk is not privy to."

Actor Chris Pine (James Kirk) meanwhile was quick to emphasise just how much of a challenge Kirk and the rest of the crew will face when they go up against the villain. "He is Kirk's shadow of death, his Achilles' heel. He is a big mirror reflecting all of Kirk's insecurities back at him. He is just as intelligent and logical as Spock, but is also one very very bad mother[frick]er." That's something which Benedict Cumberbatch seems to relish, as he describes the villain he will bring to life on the big screen next year. "He's sort of superhuman, pretty much unbeatable. Brainy and brawny. He manipulates situations. he's incarcrated when Kirk is talking to him and yet he still gets Kirk to do his work for him. He pushes him into a corner where the only route to salvation is cooperation. There is a real Hannibal Lecter quality to him. "

When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis. With a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction. As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his crew.

^ NO Khan. Give it a rest.

As for this interview...they just seem to regurgitate the same info about his character over and over in every single interview.

Alive Eve has a serious case of dead face going on....ugh.

Also, Is this another entry into the trend of "villains getting themselves captured for some crazy shit to go down"?

So what do we know about "John Harrison", so far? He's a supersoldier who wants revenge on Kirk for killing his wife and steals the genesis project?

Not Khan. Khan is a megalomaniac and would not join Starfleet because he would be a subordinate. Megalomaniacs do not take orders. Using Khan again would be pandering to the fans. Look how Star Trek Nemesis turned out - it was a box office bomb and was not made to appeal to non-Trek fans in general. JJ has said that this movie was not made exclusively for Trek fans, it was made for a wide general audience. Therefore, not Khan.

Are you insane or a fool?

"A new mechanic to give the hero and the villain a chance to talk to each other"?

Bullcrap, I say:

Freaking Austin Powers
Marathon Man, a fricking awesome film from the 70s
True Romance
Usual Suspects
Basic Instinct
Se7en
Reservoir Dogs
Brazil
Casino Royale (Craig even!)

I'm going to shut up now, but people who think interrogation scenes in films are something that DKR created or had something to do with creating are absolutely film noobs, even if they call it a 'new' cliche by saying it's old when pro- and ant- agonists have been doing it for years in Hollywood. >.<

I really don't want Khan in this movie and i honestly believe the majority of people that actually WANT Khan in this are non-trek fans because Khan is the ONLY villain they know anything about from Star Trek.

True trek fans KNOW that there are far more villains in the Star Trek universe than Khan Noonien Singh. IMHO he wasn't even the BEST trek villain. Not by a mile.

"He believes he and others were wronged and is focused on destruction."

He's Gary...

But there are "others" who were wronged.

The Khan buildup...

What If I were to tell you that there's two villains in the movie... and both of our choices are correct... have been the whole time... They just don't want to let us in on the secret that Khan and Gary Mitchell are working together in this timeline...

Mitchell is more experienced than Kirk in this timeline, hence he's been out in space for an extra year and had his own "adventures".

In that extra year Mitchell runs into and is the one to awaken Khan... however we don't find this out until the end of the film ;)

They've said Cumberbatch is a sympathetic villain...
That's because he's not so black and white, wants revenge and has been manipulated by Khan...

Khan saw him as a potential follower and weapon to use against Earth.
Eventually Cumberbatch realizes he's being used.
Taking a page out of Marvel's book Khan is setup and teased in this film, but it ends on a cliffhanger.
Khan will be the next film, but Gary has slightly altered his timeline by being the one to wake him up...

But damn that would be one hella epic story, [frick]

He's an L2 biotic! Damn, all the bright lense flares must be killing him...

So uh, yeah, there's a reason he made the Hannibal Lecter reference.... that is where the trope initially comes from. The Silence of the Lambs.

Hannibal makes a deal to be transferred to a fantastically more accommodating prison in exchange for personally helping a senator find her daughter's abductor. Once there, he gives Clarice the last remaining bit of information to track down Buffalo Bill, and makes a glorious prison break, seen below.
