J.J. Abrams' sequel to his critically acclaimed reboot of the Star Trek franchise is set to begin filming early next year, but one of the biggest questions concerning the film that have yet to be answered is who will be the villain(s). Recent rumors suggest that the infamous Klingons will be making an appearance, but the following may give a huge hint concerning the direction the film will go in. Variety is reporting that Benicio del Toro (Sin City, Savages) has met with Abrams about playing the primary villain in the sequel. An offer is expected to be made soon, possibly by the end of the weekend.

Though no offer has been delivered, sources close to the project say Benicio Del Toro is expected to be offered the part soon, maybe by weekend's end.

Insiders say Del Toro has met with Abrams but doesn't know what the role is, in order to keep in a secret. Par and Skydance had no comment on the casting.

Who do you think Del Toro should play, should he accept the role? Sound off your thoughts below in the usual place.

J.J. Abrams' untitled Star Trek sequel will begin production next January, and will possibly be out late 2012 or summer 2013.

Personally, I wouldn't be surprised if he ends up being a Klingon. He looks quite a bit like one IMO.

Yeah right Benicio doesnt know what the role is.

AGENT: Hey JJ Abrahms wants to meet you to play the villain in Star Trek. He wants to meet with you and convince you you should sign on the dotted line. Oh but part of his pitch is to not tell you the role cause your (notorious) big mouth would spoil it. So just sign whatever contract he gives you okay? Done.

DEL TORO: Right...

khan for sure.. But one problem with Khan.. They have to go through the Space Seed episode, and wait 15 years for him to actually become Kirk's nemesis.

Either a Klingon or Khan...although I'd prefer him bein a Klingon to Khan...I'd like a thespian type actor for Khan...I think Del Toro is more a menacing dark type actor...Khan is kinda dramatic in his speech and has a bit of swagger that I don't think Del Toro really brings across but he's a great actor so who knows what he can pull off.

The whole Klingon thing is a ruse.Del Toro will be Gary Mitchell Kirks academy friend who gets godlike powers after the Enterprise passes through the galaxy's barrier in where no man has gone before.
