Pretty much anyone who didn't work on the first script would be a welcome addition to the next one. I enjoyed the Trek revamp, but it has one of the most appallingly lazy scripts ever.

It still doesn't excuse lazy writing. They had the opportunity to build a great story with recognizable branding and turned out a shiny turd that doesn't even qualify as escapism. The script insults your intelligence, then grind it's boot into your forehead. I even briefly chatted with that Orci guy on another site and he offered up the *dumbest* excuses for his story failures.
The story insults Trek and non-Trek fans alike with lazy plot advancement and ridiculous dialogue. I cold swallow the Enterprise that looks like a Weight Watchers for Starships ad , I could buy the Old Navy uniforms. Bad dialogue not withstanding nor the forced in-jokes, but the producers and writers played the public for their pocket money, and they *continue to lap it up*!!!

RIP Intelligent thought provoking drama, hello shiny blockbuster crap designed to do nothing more than separate you from your money.

@thereverendjonnynemo- On many occasions I've pointed out the problems like- blowing up Vulcan, the spock/uhura relationship and basically the origin of Kirk. But aside from that, the film was very good. The action was great, the actors were all really good and spot-on especially Karl Urban- he was a SPOT-ON Leonard "Bones" McCoy.

But you have a right to your own opinion. I just feel that the simple fact that JJ Abrams actually got a lot of my friends to like Trek is amazing in itself

Your assessment of the state of Star Trek leading up to JJ Abrams taking over is spot on. Star Trek had become too much inside Baseball that required a flow chart to keep up with.It seemed as if many trekkers saw Star Trek as almost a religion. Something that if you were not willing or able to dedicate your life to mastering, you shouldn't bother coming around.This regulated Star trek to being written off by most popular culture as a franchise for fanatical nerds and not to be enjoyed by casual fans.I had my doubts going into the reboot. How could anyone match Shatner as Kirk? But you know what sold Pine as Kirk to me? Two scenes.one,the scene in the bar when Kirk is hitting on Uhura. She talks about Iowa guys having sex with animals.Pine made a face that was part smug,cocky and charming that made me say to myself "that's Jim Kirk" second,the scene at the end of the film where Kirk,now Captain of the Enterprise, walks on the bridge,pauses,makes another face that seems to say "This was always gonna happen"then strides to his command chair oozing with self confidence. With those scenes I knew the future of Star Trek was in good hands.

I walked into the theatre with an open mind too. I walked out feeling like I just watched a good movie that reinvigorated the series.

Then I started thinking about the plot holes... then the plot advancement, then the corny dialogue... then I felt violated.

This Jim Kirk wasn't a cocky swaggering cadet, he was a douchebag who cheated on a military exam and was then inexplicably given command of a flying weapon.

Not probationary.

Not field commission.

Full ranking CO, because Orci's an idiot who unfortunately set the tone for the franchise to come.

All in all, The dialouge was cheesy.. The effects were amazing.. The plot had more holes in it than your mother's favorite underwear.. Karl Urban WAS Deforest Kelly... They phoned it in with the time travel bit..

I can go back and forth all night about this. I could argue both sides. But ultimately - The film had enough nods to it's predecessors to keep the old school fanboys (like myself) entertained, And enough flash and bang to bring in a new generation of viewers. I say let them run with it - I've seen every film (At least since i was old enough) since ST V: Final Frontier in theatres on opening night.. I loved "First Contact" and hated "Nemesis". They all have their flaws. I've been a die-hard fan of the TV series for years.. Again, they all have their flaws.

But they were fun to watch.

So I say let JJ & co. fly with it. I can deal with the flaws if they're still entertaining from a moviegoer's perspective.
