We haven't heard much lately from J.J. Abrams concerning the highly anticipated sequel to his Star Trek film. That's because he was so busy with his latest project, Super 8, that he hasn't had time to commit to Star Trek 2. In a recent interview, however, he talked about how the script was being handled, with Damon Lindelof having a stronger hand in the script writing. From Movieweb.com:

"Damon is working on the script for this one. As busy as I've been with Super 8, I remember that when we did the first one, Damon was that busy with Lost. So it's going to be very cool to have him on board as a writer. There are some amazing ideas. These are not just great friends of mine, but they're great writers. I'm thrilled and very optimistic that it's going to get to where it needs to get to."

Says his main focus right is finishing Super 8:

"The truth is that my focus has been so much on finishing Super 8 that it's been something I'm looking forward to getting to, but with an incredibly compressed post schedule, there hasn't been a whole lot of time for me to be working with the writers. Now that Super 8 is drawing to a close in terms of this post schedule, I'm looking forward to jumping in and hopefully getting that ready as soon as possible."

Star Trek 2 hits theaters June 29th, 2012!

@WittySupername

Stale maybe, but it didn't compromise on the story telling to get out a solid plot, like this weak offering.

Oh, and yer Mom already gave me hers, but thanks :)

If the writing weren't so shitty, I might too.

Pretty much anyone who didn't work on the first script would be a welcome addition to the next one. I enjoyed the Trek revamp, but it has one of the most appallingly lazy scripts ever.

I grew up with TNG...i really enjoyed the 'Star Trek Enterprise' series despite what many complained about it...'Deep Space 9' not so much.

I watched some of TOS before...and I gotta say...the new movie had way cooler Romulans.

Just saying, people can trash the new JJ-Verse for Star Trek all they want but JJ did resurrect Star Trek for a NEW generation of viewers and he actually made all the Star Wars fans get into Star Trek because of his film.

As "itbegins2005" put it...he is owed gratitude for bringing back Star Trek in a really fresh and exciting way.

"...now that Abrams has made the series popular again, maybe-- just maybe-- they might put out some more decent stuff since there's, you know, demand for it now."

It still doesn't excuse lazy writing. They had the opportunity to build a great story with recognizable branding and turned out a shiny turd that doesn't even qualify as escapism. The script insults your intelligence, then grind it's boot into your forehead. I even briefly chatted with that Orci guy on another site and he offered up the *dumbest* excuses for his story failures.
The story insults Trek and non-Trek fans alike with lazy plot advancement and ridiculous dialogue. I cold swallow the Enterprise that looks like a Weight Watchers for Starships ad , I could buy the Old Navy uniforms. Bad dialogue not withstanding nor the forced in-jokes, but the producers and writers played the public for their pocket money, and they *continue to lap it up*!!!

boborci: "Our Jim Kirk made captain so quickly because it happens just like that in real life."

I doubt anyone at Annapolis would agree with him.

To owe JJ gratitude is to offer thanx to the guy that stole your wallet and made it look like your idea.

A shiny bad story is still a bad story.

RIP Intelligent thought provoking drama, hello shiny blockbuster crap designed to do nothing more than separate you from your money.

"...new unrealistic popular Trek".

...your words. I may be a Trekkie, but at least I'm not someone who flocks to the shiny object because I'm blinded to it's true nature.

While I didn't cheer over the last three Trek movies, but at least they were handled with integrity and respect for the characters and philosophy.

As for my bad taste, that'd be the one Lindelhof and Orci left in my mouth with such thought jarring dialogue like:

UHURA
Was I not one of your top students?

SPOCK
Indeed you were.

UHURA
...and did I not, on multiple occasions, demonstrate an exceptional oral sensitivity?..........

Uhura reduced to manipulative Vulcan squeeze toy. How clever...

@thereverendjonnynemo- On many occasions I've pointed out the problems like- blowing up Vulcan, the spock/uhura relationship and basically the origin of Kirk. But aside from that, the film was very good. The action was great, the actors were all really good and spot-on especially Karl Urban- he was a SPOT-ON Leonard "Bones" McCoy.

But you have a right to your own opinion. I just feel that the simple fact that JJ Abrams actually got a lot of my friends to like Trek is amazing in itself

@LP4

...if only the problems ended there. I'll give you Urban... I like him a lot too as well as Pegg, but definitely cheated out of my cash for the rest of the movie.

Abrams is really good at pulling the wool over peoples eyes. That's why there were so many lens flares.

itbegins2005:

As a life long Star trek fan (since 1972) whose seen every Star Trek film on opening weekend and every series since the original from day one, I have to say you hit it on the head when it came to rebooting the franchise. Your assessment of the state of Star Trek leading up to JJ Abrams taking over is spot on. Star Trek had become too much inside Baseball that required a flow chart to keep up with.It seemed as if many trekkers saw Star Trek as almost a religion. Something that if you were not willing or able to dedicate your life to mastering, you shouldn't bother coming around. This regulated Star trek to being written off by most popular culture as a franchise for fanatical nerds and not to be enjoyed by casual fans.I had my doubts going into the reboot. How could anyone match Shatner as Kirk? But you know what sold Pine as Kirk to me? Two scenes.one, the scene in the bar when Kirk is hitting on Uhura. She talks about Iowa guys having sex with animals.Pine made a face that was part smug, cocky and charming that made me say to myself "that's Jim Kirk" second, the scene at the end of the film where Kirk, now Captain of the Enterprise, walks on the bridge, pauses, makes another face that seems to say "This was always gonna happen"then strides to his command chair oozing with self confidence. With those scenes I knew the future of Star Trek was in good hands.

@reverend- To be honest, the thing i liked most about the new movie was Urban...he really embodied the role perfectly from DeForest. Like you- I've BEEN a trekkie. But the difference is- i walked into the movie not expecting it to be exactly like the original series. I already figured they'd take Trek but then add their own spin to it. That's what Hollywood does to a lot of franchises they resurrect.

Even as a fan i gotta admit...Trek did grow stale after a while. Last time i really felt for it was when i watched Kirk team up with Picard but then die. I mean...Trek needed a fresh, new start.

I walked into the theatre with an open mind too. I walked out feeling like I just watched a good movie that reinvigorated the series.

Then I started thinking about the plot holes... then the plot advancement, then the corny dialogue... then I felt violated.

This Jim Kirk wasn't a cocky swaggering cadet, he was a douchebag who cheated on a military exam and was then inexplicably given command of a flying weapon.

Not probationary.

Not field commission.

Full ranking CO, because Orci's an idiot who unfortunately set the tone for the franchise to come.

...yep. All flash.

LP4 - 5/6/2011, 4:04 PM
@reverend- True. Like i said earlier, Kirk's origin was altered...like everything else was. But changes were expected.

As for him getting command of a giant flying weapon...yeah i see your point there. But hey...that is a rather small nitpick. I mean, the movie as a whole was a fresh, reboot that reinvigorated the once-stale franchise.

For THAT I am thankful to J.J

All in all, The dialouge was cheesy.. The effects were amazing.. The plot had more holes in it than your mother's favorite underwear.. Karl Urban WAS Deforest Kelly... They phoned it in with the time travel bit..

I can go back and forth all night about this. I could argue both sides. But ultimately - The film had enough nods to it's predecessors to keep the old school fanboys (like myself) entertained, And enough flash and bang to bring in a new generation of viewers. I say let them run with it - I've seen every film (At least since i was old enough) since ST V: Final Frontier in theatres on opening night.. I loved "First Contact" and hated "Nemesis". They all have their flaws. I've been a die-hard fan of the TV series for years.. Again, they all have their flaws.

But they were fun to watch.

So I say let JJ & co. fly with it. I can deal with the flaws if they're still entertaining from a moviegoer's perspective.
