what was the point of this chase scene ? Was this scene really needed ? I know that later on Spock went to Pike to report Kirk, but still ...

@avatarang, not not at all cause thats pretty [frick]ing stupid. this scene just felt like a rip off of raiders of the lost ark to be honest. production design was awesome tho, will give them that

Cool concept art. It was a good solid film not as good as the first but still a really good film.

Although i do agree as to what was the point of that opening sequence?

@racoonwithrockets

i think they just needed the reason to write the scene where Spock is reporting on Kirk to Pike. Although the opening scene was kinda cool, it wasn't really related to the story whatsoever. They should just show young Khan and his "family".

It was definitely a popcorn movie, and I think that pisses off a lot of Trek fans because it abandoned philosophy in favor of fun.

There was a poll I saw the other day where hardcore Trek fans ranked Into Darkness as the worst Trek movie.... even below that one Shatner-directed mess where Spock nerve-pinches a horse.

I personally think it's a pretty good movie. I watched it again tonight, with the family, and the big Khan reveal was a surprise to those who hadn't seen it... and I think that's the audience JJ was aiming for: casual viewers who've seen Star Trek before, but don't revolve their lives around it.

How does it relate to the story itself ?

@santoanderson When Trek fans start talking about philosophy they are usually TNG Trek fans. I think that JJ's Trek sticks pretty close to what Trek was with the Original Crew.

@jerryblake: My friend, the opening sequence opens the discussion of the entire movie - "what would you do for your family".

Kirk goes to the vulcan and saves Spock, even knowing that was going against the fleet laws and that Spock would never do the same for him in that situation.

But, along the movie, with all of Khan backstory, Spock finally changes his mind and end up doing everything he can to capture Khan and save Kirk.

And it was also a homage to Raiders of the Lost Ark, evidently.
