When Quentin Tarantino's Star Trek film was first announced, fans were caught off guard by the unorthodox choice. The filmmaker, who has made his name directing relentlessly violent genre fare with unique and tense dialogue, is one of the most revered figures in Hollywood. It is no denying that a Tarantino movie set in the Star Trek universe would get a whole lot of people back into theaters after the sub-par box office performance of Star Trek Beyond.
Recently, on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Zachary Quinto, who plays Spock, commented on his potential involvement in Tarantino's vision.
You know, until deals are done and contracts are signed and schedules are cleared, nothing is set in stone, so anything can happen. My understanding is Quentin had this idea and they were shaping it and forming it and he is off to do his Manson movie. And it would be after that, that [the 2009 cast] would go maybe do one with him. Which is pretty exciting, pretty cool.
Before today there was no indication of when and where in the vast Star Trek universe this film would take place, but after Quinto’s remark fans now have a vague idea of what the movie will be. This reveal now begs the question, would it have been better to tackle a wholly original Star Trek story instead?
