Quentin Tarantino's STAR TREK Movie Officially Enlists THE REVENANT Scribe Mark L. Smith

After being reported earlier this month that The Revenant's Mark L. Smith was the frontrunner to pen Quentin Tarantino's upcoming Star Trek project, Paramount has made it official by inking him to a deal.

Deadline is reporting that Paramount Pictures has officially tapped Mark L. Smith to write the script for Quentin Tarantino's upcoming R-rated Star Trek movie, which reportedly has Tarantino eyeing to direct and also has him set to co-produce with J.J. Abrams (Mission: Impossible 3) and Bad Robot Productions.

While plot details remain under strict lock-and-key, this decision comes just a few short weeks after it was reported that Smith had emerged as the clear frontrunner from within a writer's room that included him, Lindsey Beer (Godzilla vs. Kong), Drew Pearce (Iron Man 3), and Megan Amran (Parks and Recreation).

If Tarantino does wind up directing, the film would be his tenth and presumably final feature film if he stays true to his previously laid out retirement plan. He's currently in pre-production on his ninth feature, which is rumored to be centered on the Manson Family murders, and last we heard, he was meeting with top-level talents, including Tom Cruise (Mission: Impossible 6), Leonardo DiCaprio (The Wolf of Wall Street), Samuel L. Jackson (Avengers: Infinity War), Brad Pitt (Allied), and Margot Robbie (Suicide Squad) for key roles.

Smith is best known for his work on Alejandro González Iñárritu's The Revenant and on the Kate Beckinsale-led horror film Vacancy. His next project is coincidentally another Bad Robot production, the World War II thriller Overlord.
