Is Rise of the Planet of the Apes director Rupert Wyatt the actual frontrunner for Star Trek 3 despite reports that G.I. Joe: Retaliation director Jon M. Chu is the top choice?

Collider via Cinematallica, reports that director Rupert Wyatt (Rise of the Planet of the Apes) is the actual frontrunner for the Star Trek 3 directing gig, despite an earlier report from Latino Review that G.I. Joe: Retaliation director Jon M. Chu is Paramount's top choice. Steven Weintraub of Collider corroborates the report from Cinematallica that Wyatt is indeed the frontrunner. This new report also comes on the heels of Jon M. Chu's reps informing the Huffington Post that the director has had no discussions with anyone from Bad Robot or Paramount about Star Trek. Of course, when it comes to Abrams and co., denials mean absolutely nothing.

On January 25, 2013, The Walt Disney Studios and Lucasfilm officially announced that J.J. Abrams would direct Star Wars: Episode VII. The announcement led many fans to assume that Abrams would not be returning for the third entry in the Star Trek reboot franchise. Abrams is confirmed, at the very least, to be a producer on Star Trek 3, with no official word yet on whether he'll be back to direct. Star Wars: Episode VII is currently set for release in summer 2015 with principal photography set to commence in early 2014 in the UK.

RotPotA was a good drama that built up the an action climax.


If they decide to go with the 5-year-mission, explorer-based story this time, I think this guy would be good at helping build that narrative.

Whaa??? I seen em suck! Tell me how Storm Shadow clearly dies in the first one and then comes back in the 2nd all fine? Plus G.I Joe fans hate those movies and they both got negative reviews! Yeah, real winners right there!

Plus, in the 2nd one, How dumb is that that u delay that movie 9 months just to make it in 3D and alsoadd an extra minute to Channing Tatum's screentime in the movie? Can you say Derp?

am I the only one who liked G.I.Joe 2 ? Not to say it was definitely better than this forgettable Planet of The Apes reboot ... Say what you want about Chu, but this guy know how to make action ...

Anyway, Stat Trek 3 is already dead for me. I don't think they can redeem themselves after part 2. So BAD.

I thought Rise of the Planet of the Apes was one of the best movies of 2011. It caught me completely by surprise at how good it was. This guy is not a bad choice for the next Star Trek movie.

If a director can get you to sympathize with a CGI ape and then wish that all the humans died at the end that director is doing something right.

lol getting M.Chu's to replac J.J.Abrams would b very stupid move from the producers. The same thing that happened to X-Men would certainly repeatwith StarTrek. First 2 movies from both series were good and directed by two good directors(Brian Singer and J.J.Abramsthen third time comes andthe directors leavebut unstead f bringing somebody good they get Brett Ratner or in this new case M.Chu.

Bt the way I heard Singer loves Star Trek and hewould like to direct a Star Trek movie someday. 2016 would probably be possible for him because he would be done by md 2014 after Days OF fFuture Past. However I thiknk Rupert Whyat seems a betterchoice for right now because he wont be as exhausted as Singr would be after directing a super big time travel movie with Xmen movie besies that Whyat did a really good job with PLanet of the Apes and I think he could nail Star Trek.
j.Chu s good for G.I.Joe because he does action with no substance and Whyat is a good fit for the usual character driven with action for Star Trek.

Scotty killing the guard, Scotty having a bigger role, Spock having no role at all, Scotty sneaking into Enterprise (that's some lame writing, right there), no action in the third act, Chekov accent was becoming ridiculous, first scene wasn't even related into the movie, Kirk death scene. Uffff

And I must say, that i've found that the only people who found this year's Star Trek movie to be great, are people who never seen Star Trek 2, The Wrath of Khan, which is still the best Star Trek movie ever. Followed by Star Trek 6: The Undiscovered Country & Star Trek 8: First Contact.

Paramount is going to want a Star Trek film in theatres by 2016 for the franchise's 50th anniversary, and it just doesn't seem likely Abrams will have the time to do Episode VII and Star Trek 3. The choice of Rupert Wyatt, if true, would be inspired. He did such an incredible job of grounding Rise of the Planet of the Apes that his attention to character and story would be a tremendous boon to Trek.

Just finish this bullshit so you can get another team on Star Trek to get back to some good shit story telling about what it means to be human. This Star Trek is a parody, all the characters are portrayed as over-exaggerated donkeys. The original writers of Star Trek were well versed in classic and great literature and were referencing them in Trek all the time. These writers are well versed on the Saturday morning funny papers - nothing wrong with that, just not right for Star Trek.

Hopefully Rupert Wyatt can wrap this up in a nice and respectful way. Really enjoyed Rise of the Planet of the Apes.
