Bryan Fuller, executive producer of the new series Star Trek: Discovery, has revealed some exciting information regarding casting and the setting of the show. During a panel at the Television Critics Association, Fuller discussed how the show will tie in to the overall Star Trek universe through "a specific incident in the Star Trek Universe". Fuller also went on to say that the series will focus on a female lieutenant commander, honing in on a story "about this woman's journey. In order to understand something completely alien to her, she has to understand herself."
This is definitely a departure from previous Star Trek television series, however it's interesting to note that Discovery will be "set in the "prime universe" of the original 1960 TV series...about 10 years before Captain Kirk's 5-year mission began." Fuller also disclosed some info about potential alien races, both new and some "reimaginings of existing aliens", namedropping a specific alien named Saru. Although no official casting has been announced, Fuller also stated Discovery will feature a gay character, "an addition significant to [Discovery's] gay producer".
