Background:
In 2009 JJ Abrams and Co. released the critically acclaimed reboot to the film series, based upon Gene Roddenbery's acclaimed tv series, aptly named 'Star Trek.' And while it was a big hit with the critics, fans were feeling a little isolated due to the films lack of fan service. If that is a concern of yours heading into this movie, you need not to worry, you guys are covered.
Story:
As far as stories go, this one seems pretty straight forward. Bad guy attacks, goods guys go get him. But, that is not simply the case. There are multiple aspects to this movie and multiple twists that make it almost impossible to predict. The film starts off on a high note and it never wavers, delivering a satisfying mix of action, humor, and drama, while still maintaining its sense of suspense.
Characters:
All the actors from the previous film appear, and they are as good as ever. The frontrunners this time around are Kirk, and Spock (Obviously), John Harrison, and, to my surprise, Scotty. All of whom are at their best. Some gripes with this film were that the rest of the crew are underused. I find that to be only true with Uhura, she is barely in this one, and it is a negative. John Cho and Anton Yelchin are both utilised, and in very creating and surprising ways. While newcomers Peter Weller, and Alice Eve are both good in their respective roles, they are overshadowed by the main cast. My real big complain about the movie is that I wish the Klingons were used a bit more. Im not a hardcore Trekkie, and didn't grow up with them, but they seemed pretty badass.
3D & IMAX:
The 3D in this film may have been and after thought, but it does feel like a forethought. It is mostly used to add depth, much like 'Prometheus' last year. is isnt distracting, and adds quite ab bit to the drama. And IMAX is a must for this film.
Verdict:
'Star Trek Into Darkness' boldly goes where most sci-fi action films have gone before, but with the added benefits of unsuspecting twists and a fantastic cast.
