Screenwriter David Lindelof has issued an apology via his twitter page concerning the scantily clad appearance of Alice Eve's character in J.J. Abrams' Star Trek sequel. Hit the jump to find out why.

David Lindelof tweeted this apology via twitter after the backlash received from female viewers and fans of the series for reducing the character to a sexual object.



He also relayed the following statement via an email to MTV.

Why is Alice Eve in her underwear, gratuitously and unnecessarily, without any real effort made as to why in God's name she would undress in that circumstance? Well there's a very good answer for that. But I'm not telling you what it is. Because... uh... MYSTERY?

It made no sense what so ever and the horny side of aint complaining but it was just [frick]ing random, just like the whole character of Carol Marcus. Seriously wtf did she do in the movie?

He needs apologize about the stupid magic blood. Also if I remember correctly Bones 72 [frick]ing Super soldiers with the same super blood at his disposal yet he wanted Khans.

Shia was in his underwear in the first Transformers movie for no reason at all. Did Michael Bay have to apologize for that? No. So neither does Lindelof. How much do you want to bet that if Carol Marcus was a fat, ugly chick, there would not have been any complaints? This hot girl hate crap has got to stop. Yes, it was gratuitous. And?

hey..i'd be really shocked AND disappointed if they don't have ANY gratuitous scene with her, either in her panties or a REALLY super SKIMPY outfit. i mean..this is ALICE EVE we're talkin bout! c'mooooonnnn....

and what good sci-fy flick u know that don't have a SEXY scene?? Alien..Deep Blue Sea (the one bout those smart sharks)..Terminator (the first one)..Avatar (sure, she's animated, but, hey!)

so, yeah..as a matter of fact, that particular scene IS one of the main reasons i wanna and am gonna watch this movie on the big screen.

Look, I have no problem with seeing a gorgeous half naked woman in a movie, but the scene WAS completely out of place and made no frackin sense. If they wanted to show Eve in her undies, great..stick a love scene in there between her and Kirk, or have him walk in on her unexpectedly as she's changing (even that would have been gratuitous but at least made a bit more sense).

Why in the hell is it that other women complain about something like this? I don't complain every time I see a guy on-screen in his undies and shirtless. She was in the middle of changing her outfit and asked Kirk to turn around as to not see her. He looked because he's a pervy man (but who isn't? :P), that's what he saw. Were women expecting that it was going to be an oiled-up Channing Tatum instead? Jeez...

Get the hell over it, people. There are more important things in the world than a woman in her bra and panties in a [frick]ing movie.

Okay, not that I don't like seeing Alice Eve in her underwear (damn, do I ever), but seriously, they likely could and probably should have made a "look, it's Alice Eve in her undies" scene that had ANY purpose at all besides presenting her body.

There is gratuitous and then there's gratuitous and lazy. ;)

@Moohika - You obviously never been to a Star Trek Convention in your life, women Trekkies make up at least 30/40% the attendance. I was at the recent Destination UK convention and out of the 5 of us that went, 2 were female.



Stripping to underwear for no reason in this Star Trek is not surprising because this isn't Star Trek. Its just action movie template crap to pull in non Star Trek fan. Your average action movie viewer gets bored if there isn't a fight, a one-liner, a joke, an explosion, a sex scene or at least some gratuitous unclothing like this every 5-10 minutes of a movie. These guys are just playing the numbers.

You can count on one finger the amount of times a main character stripped for no reason but to please a neanderthal crowd in ST:TNG. Real Star Trek is supposed to be lot more intelligently written an purposely driven than his crap they've regressed to doing for easy money. Lindelof knows, and that's why he's apologizing for selling out the integrity.

And Carol Marcus was never a Star Fleet officer. She was an independent scientist who's research like many others was part funded by Star Fleet, retard writers!

@Ceejay I agree with your assessment of there being plenty of female Star Trek fans, however I do disagree about this film not being Star Trek.

Remember this is an adaptation of the first series, where in Kirk lost his shirt regularly during commercial break, he bedded all types of alien women, and enjoyed engaging in fisticuffs with anyone who looked at him wrong. It's true that TNG and beyond was much more of a thinking man's show, but the original series had many of the elements in it originally that you are now criticizing.

Also I found this scene in the movie incredibly random, and a little annoying. I'm glad he apologized for it. I have no problem with nudity in films when it fits, but when something like this is in there for the sole reason of giving 13 year old boys erections, and holds no narrative value, it mildly irritates me.

We should be use to these shenanagins. For year feminist have complained about the depiction of women in comics. We hear things like"why are all the women in comics six foot, busty, and in a bikini" and "not all women are built like models". I think they skipped the first hundred pages of all the men built like gods, running around in spandex and underwear. If they want to talk about personalities and other real problems with female comic characters, I'm all for it. As soon as they get into the way they dress or look, I have to tune them out. Sex sells and there is nothing wrong with that. It is just the way it is.

Its funny how people let their kids watch all the violence in the world, and then get up in arms when a breast pops out at the superbowl. It's funny how I see kids in a r rated movie with their parents and anorld wielding a shotgun blowing people away is fine, but cover there kids eye when the sex scene pops up. So worried about your thirteen year old [frick]ing, but not that hes in his room beating hookers with baseball bats in GTA. Then you wonder why when he turned sixteen he murdered his whole class, when he should have been out chasing tail.

@fortycals: The reason he murdered his whole class was because of self-esteem issues coupled with bullying and a lack of friends (i.e., someone he's comfortable talking to). A healthy person doesn't play a violent game or look at violent images and then suddenly turn into a monster. That's not the way it works.
