After taking us on a trip to a sitcom reality in Marvel's WandaVision, Matt Shakman is set to journey to the final frontier for the latest installment in Paramount Pictures' Star Trek franchise.

Deadline reports that Shakman has signed a deal to direct the untitled Star Trek movie for Paramount and J.J. Abrams' Bad Robot, with production scheduled to commence next spring. Lindsey Beer and Geneva Robertson penned the latest draft of the script. This will be the latest attempt to get a new Trek project off the ground after Quentin Tarantino and Noah Hawley's takes fell by the wayside.

Details are few and far between, but Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana and the rest of the "Kelvin Timeline" crew introduced in Abrams' 2009 reboot are expected to reprise their respective roles.

Shakman was nominated for an Emmy award earlier today for Outstanding Directing for a Limited or Anthology Series or Move for his work on WandaVision, and is said to have "chose Star Trek over several other offers."

UPDATE: Despite initial reports suggesting that Pine and co. would be back, THR reckons "it’s unknown if castmembers from Abrams’ 2009 reboot, led by Chris Pine as Captain Kirk, will be in the film."

We'll keep you updated if and when we hear more, but for now, be sure to let us know what you make of this news in the usual place.

About time, I know others dislike the new series, im a huge fan. Plus, it was smart enough to get Chris Pine to be the lead, only franchise to do so.

Another director change?

If it happens hope we get a story with Klingons.

@dracula - going Klingon is the easiest route cuz you can go Undiscovered Country and make it relevant to today’s times so it feels like real Trek. Pine deserves a sequel to Beyond.

@McMurdo - hope they give Bones more to do. Original Trek was focused on Kirk, Spock and Bones. The Abrams movies switched him out for Uhura. Beyond gave everyone a bit more to do, but was still mainly Kirk and Spock

@dracula - Agree. Bones needs more to do. I really enjoy Karl's performance of his character more than the rest of them.

Nice, I wonder if they still plan to have Chris Hemsworth make an appearance?

Whatever happened to the Tarantino flick?

@Cbmfilmjunkie - it just died out as people lost interest.

@Origame - really kind of glad. Would want Tarantino’s last film to be original

@dracula - not sure that would've counted as his last film since he wasn't even sure if he'd direct it.

Them returning seems like a stretch by this point, unless it’s another few years away, where they are meant to be a bit noticeably older (and unfortunately without the late Anton Yelchin). The last two movies didn’t seem to be as well received at the box office and critically as would have been hoped, even though Beyond felt very much like a story you could expect out of the original series.

I'm hoping that experience with wandavision helps him to understand what works and doesn't when it comes to storytelling with these massive franchises. The ending fight was just an unnecessary spectacle considering the rest was a well told suspenseful mystery masked by a comedy. And so many of those mystery fizzled out. So just if you're gonna add a mystery, make the answer something good. And you don't need a giant fight if it doesn't fit the story told.

Here’s a challenge Paramount.

For this films 1st Draft.

Only allow 2 phaser blasts and only 2 photon torpedoes.

Let’s see if yo got what it takes to tell a story.

@IronGenesis - Exactly. "Then" they can add these of sorts of thing.

Wasn't a huge fan of the first two but I loved the last one, hoping for more of that.

@JustAChillFan - Interesting, as it seems most people preferred the first two.

What I liked about the third one (more than the firs two) as that it played like one of their OG episodes.

I think if they just STOP spending waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too much on these films, they can stop being concerned if it doesn't make a half a billion dollars.

Seriously, some decent writing can make things interesting enough without having to have a one-hundred million dollar budget.

@LSHF - they'll need that budget just to get the old cast back.

@clornelas - That's a very valid point. Lol.

Also in the boat who hopes they bring Hemsworth back, that story sounds good even in half a sentence.

And bring the same cast back, those were casting decisions.
