Zachary Quinto, who plays Spock in the recent cinematic reboot of the franchise, recently teased that the upcoming Star Trek sequel has up to three scripts in the works. Speaking to Entertainment Tonight, Quinto explained what's going on with Paramount’s Star Trek film series. First teasing Quentin Tarantino's in-development script:

First of all, I think there’s a couple of scripts. Because there was a script being written before Quentin Tarantino came up with his idea for a potential film. And so I think they are kind of developing more than one. So I don’t know what is going to happen. Quentin is off doing another movie. So, I feel like we are in a state of anticipation.

Quinto then confirmed that there are upwards of three scripts being written for the upcoming sequel and beyond:

All of us are really excited about the idea of working with Quentin on a Trek film, but I know Simon Pegg and Doug Jung, who wrote the last film, are writing a script and there are another set of writers writing a script. So I don’t know. I don’t know what’s going to happen.

To clarify the actor's statements; The Wrap reports that Pegg and Jung are in fact writing a potential script, as are Patrick McKay and J.D. Payne. The latter pairing wrote the initial draft for Star Trek Beyond, before Pegg and Jung came on board to give the script a final polish. McKay and Payne were announced as screenwriters for the next film in 2016. Early rumors suggested the plot centered on Pine’s Captain Kirk teaming up with his father, played by Chris Hemsworth.

Paramount confirms to IndieWire three different scripts are being developed for the next Star Trek film. The Revenant screenwriter Mark L. Smith is penning Tarantino’s script as the director gears up production on his ninth feature, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.

What do you think about the future of Paramount's Star Trek series? What would you like to see in the sequel? Check out an excerpt from the interview below:

I wasn't the biggest fan of Abrams Khan reveal in the second one, but I liked Star Trek (2009) and Beyond, I guess.

I'm intrigued to see what Tarantino's script is like. Even if he ends up not making the 4thone, I'd love to see some of that dialogue.

I can’t imagine they aren’t going to go with Taratino’s script unless it’s off the rails raunchy or something. I’m hoping this is a proper end to this series as Beyond while great really didn’t even feel like a movie. More like a 2 hour episode of the TV show that would happen in between actual movies

@Ha1frican - I doubt it will since they seemed genuinely interested in it before. And if it was raunchy, they would have shot it down pretty quickly. But Tarantino isn't the biggest name in terms of these blockbusters so I don't think he'll sell it on his name alone.

I say let Pegg and Jung's script be Star Trek 3. Still do a Tarantino Trek completely in a different universe (prime perhaps), because the sheer fact that Tarantino is writing and directing will ensure that film is checked out by millions upon millions just out of curiosity.

IMO, this has been a pretty neat franchise, I thought Star Trek (2009) was wonderful, Into Darkness was okay, and Beyond was great, so... Pretty excited for Tarantino's version.

Feel like if they didn't pick QTs they'd never hear the end of it and people would always wonder if it would have been better.

Interesting. I am more of a Star Wars person than a Star Trek person, but I've liked the last few in the Kelvin timeline.

Star Trek (2009) was one of the best surprises. Had a GREAT cast that manage to capture the essence of the originals while still making it their own. Also its pretty cool how the movies are a remake yet still somehow cannon to the og series.

Jay Sherman: Hello, I’m Jay Sherman and this is Coming Attractions. Tonight we’ll be looking at a new film starring Christian Slater and Keanu Reeves—“Star Trek: Generation X”.
[Scene: A mop-topped Reeves and a pointy-eared Slater, clad in the gold uniforms from TNG, sit in their respective captains’ chairs. The bridge of the Enterprise looks like a early-90’s college student’s dorm, messy and trashed.]
Reeves: Space...Big deal.
[Kirk and Picard enter.]
Picard: All right, you two—which of you wrote ‘Beavis and Butt-Head rule!’ on the back of my skull???
Slater (sarcastically): Not us, man!
[Slater and Reeves laugh a la Beavis and Butt-Head.]
Reeves: Hey, aren’t you the dudes from that TV show—you know, that space thing?
Kirk: Will you please...Try to stay in character????
[Back to Jay.]
Jay: WHEN will people stop going to “Star Trek” movies? Maybe after they see a bit of William Shatner’s musical number.
[Back to the Enterprise, where Kirk is on a spotlit stool as music begins playing in the background, mic in hand.]
Kirk: Raindrops...Keep falling on my, head. My-feet, are too big, for, my bed!
[Picard plays the tambourine.]

But why? It seems wrong to do it without Anton Yelchin.

How about giving The Next generation a proper send off. Nemesis sure wasn't it.

Hope they do a film version of 'Where No Man Has Gone Before' it would be great to see a smaller more confined story set on the Enterprise. I think it would be fascinating to see what Gary Mitchell would have to go through and a Star Trek film that dipped into thriller territory.
