Ready Player One may not have had the most innovative marketing strategy, with some complaints of the trailers and posters leaning a little too heavy on pop culture references. And then there is the source material, which didn't really get the best reviews. But even with all of that to consider, director Steven Spielberg still managed to work his movie magic. As of this writing, Ready Player One is Certified Fresh on review aggregate site Rotten Tomatoes. This is Spielberg's 22nd film to receive the Certified Fresh stamp of approval.

After it's unexpected premiere at the SXSW festival, the film received generally positive feedback, with attendees praising the film as an "old school Spielberg escapist popcorn flick." With 95 reviews collected so far, Ready Player One sits on the Tomatometer at a pretty 84%. The Critics Consensus on RT is: Ready Player One is a sweetly nostalgic thrill ride that neatly encapsulates Spielberg's strengths while adding another solidly engrossing adventure to his filmography.

These are promising words, considering Spielberg's next project is Indiana Jones 5. If nothing else, Ready Player One serves as a testament to the fact that when it comes to getting back to his roots and creating a throwback adventure classic, Spielberg is still at the top of his game.

In the year 2045, people can escape their harsh reality in the OASIS, an immersive virtual world where you can go anywhere, do anything, be anyone-the only limits are your own imagination. OASIS creator James Halliday left his immense fortune and control of the Oasis to the winner of a contest designed to find a worthy heir. When unlikely hero Wade Watts conquers the first challenge of the reality-bending treasure hunt, he and his friends-known as the High Five-are hurled into a fantastical universe of discovery and danger to save the OASIS and their world.

Steven Spielberg's Ready Player One is set to hit theaters March 29th.

@Rubbers - Yeah. Unfortunately, Cline tried the same with Armada and his take on The Last Starfighter didn't quite work out.

He went a bit dodge-ball for a while but I think its safe to say that Spielberg has returned to form.

Hmmmm i'll have to try and make plans to see this film soon. Spielberg is certainly a "Jack of All Trades" director. This guy has gone from Indiana Jones to The Color Purple to Saving Private Ryan to Ready Player One....wow.

Trying to finish the book before the weekend!
Wife read the book and then said they changed a lot after seeing the trailers... my response, "They have to for the general populous".

@KindredMac - The book is an incredible story, I recommend it for anyone, but if the movie differs in some ways, I won't complain. Unlike many book-to-movie adaptations, this one gets a pass from me to take a few liberties, so long as they're in the right direction.

@r3negade - Just found out that the movie actually starts showing tonight so I am blasting through the audio book here in my office right now trying to get through if I can. I'm only at the part where Wade is describing having Max Headroom as his apartment assistant....

@KindredMac - Ooo, it only gets better from there, but you probably already know that. I've also heard that had to alter some things because it wasn't possible. I'm okay with some alterations because the Oasis is so vast and filled with different worlds anyway.

@KindredMac - Good for you, I read the book years ago, but I'm actually listening to the audiobook now! I'm at the part where IOI offers Parzival a job.

Still very skeptical, but I'm intrigued enough to see it in theaters. Hope it lives up to the book, which I enjoyed quite a bit as a clever techno treasure hunt.

Why is Iron Giant getting so much coverage in this movie? He was mentioned once when Parzival was scrolling through the mech choices but was otherwise not even mentioned. I guess that means they weren't able to get the rights to Ultraman?

Just came out from the theatre, what a movie, absolutely stunning, great old school Spielberg, another classic to add to my collection.
