AVATAR Director James Cameron Comments On How THE TERMINATOR Reboot Will Differ From The Original

Following the last two relaunch misfires Terminator Salvation and Terminator: Genisys,  the Terminator franchise is again set to reinvent itself this time with Blade Runner 2049  actress Mackenzie Davis as the new face of the franchise, co-starring Columbian actress Natalia Reyes, singer and actor Diego Boneta and Agents of SHIELD actor Gabriel Luna as a new version of a SkyNet's eponymous killing machine.

The film will also see the return of franchise stars Arnold Schwarzenegger and Linda Hamilton as the T-800 and Sarah Connor, respectively, and will be helmed by Deadpool director Tim Miller with the involvement of franchise creator James Cameron.

In an interview with Collider Cameron spoke about how his approach in developing this reboot has differed from when he originated the franchise, stating:

"We’re developing a new Terminator film. And The Terminator films are all about artificial intelligence. But I would say we’re looking at it differently than when I wrote the first story in 1982. That was just your classic ‘technology bad, smart computers bad’ kind of thing. Nowadays though — it’s got to be a much more nuanced perspective. So its ‘Smart computers bad… BUT…’ That’s the new motif."

Just what this "but" and ellipses is and how it will manifest itself in the film's narrative remains to be seen, but in a new age of technology, transparency, and surveillance could we expect a more socially pertinent Terminator film than previous entries? We'll have to wait until 22nd November 2019 to know for sure.

What do you think of Cameron's comments? Where would you like to see the Terminator franchise go? Are you looking forward to this new film? Leave your thoughts below.

Glad to see Cameron involved in the Franchise he created, again.
For me he will always be the GOAT because of the films he made, which were not only a Spectacle but also made you care about the characters in the film.

Is he outspoken? Yes, and for some reason he has taken his aim at the Comic Movie Genre but has made some of the best movies of all time.

Looking forward to another Terminator film where there is tension but also each character in the movie are the most compelling part of it.

@SimplyAz - I think Cameron is a bit hostlile towards the CBM cause he sees movies like BladeRunner 2049,Annhilation not getting the attention they deserve

I don’t care if I’m reusing my comment because it still holds up

James Cameron: [frick] Avengers films, I want other sci-fi films made
Also James Cameron: I'M MAKING ALL THESE AVATAR SEQUELS ON THE LEVEL OF GODFATHER AND ALSO MAKING A NEW TERMINATOR SERIES

I got a great idea instead of more squeals how about something original.

Complains about the Avengers effect then talks about his Terminator and Avatars squeals as something new.

James Cameron is hypocrite

They should introduce the theories of ‘Friendly AI’. Not just a re programmed Terminator but perhaps a whole different line of Cyborgs to preserve organic life.

Take a page out of Planet of the Apes. A scientist who creates a baby AI and as it grows it can analyze and learn the value of humanity so when the that AI has grown up it “births” other AI that combat the threat of SkyNet and Terminators.

Perhaps even include how the friendly AI and humans formca symbiotic relation in the future with the two merging. Humans with AI components and that strengthens the bond.

But you have AI that wants to only be strictly AI.

Technology is our ally.

@WilliamHMacy - It's running an Amazon Prime and I still can't get passed the first 10 minutes. As soon as Reese travels to the past, everything falls apart. Nevermind, that he couldn't be that muscular in the first place.

You know, this guy picked a really bad time to pick on the avengers. I’m usually not this feverish about the mcu, but I am today, and Cameron is now on my shit list. He’s getting ripped apart in the comments.

Personally, this shit today might be enough for me to skip his movies at the theaters. Might not have seen them in the first place, I’m not exactly dying for more terminator and avatar. I can definitely avoid them without losing a wink of sleep.

The difference will be....

The old ones were great and the reboot will stink.

*Talks about "avengers fatigue"

*Passes on a new project (Alita Battle Angel) for 4 Avatar sequels and a Terminator reboot that now has more bad films in the franchise than good ones.

Makes total sense James.

I really don't get the people jumping the gun at James Cameron when he is partially right. Movies like BladeRunner 2049,Annhilation,Edge Of Tomorrow and other underrated sci-fi films don't get the traction they should. From his perspective I understand that.

We still getting capeshit movies so why the fuzz??

Kyos
Kyos - 4/22/2018, 7:23 AM
@Nicklander - But would people getting less interested in superhero movies lead to people getting more interested in cool sci fi movies?

Also the very existence of movies like the ones you mentioned kind of goes against his "other stories to tell" demands. There are other stories being told.

While he works on Avatar sequels and Terminator reboots.

Comicbookart - 4/22/2018, 7:28 AM
@Nicklander - It's his fault. He's the one who promoted the big budget takeover of hollywood. Still is actually, with the development of more Avatar sequels and a Terminator reboot. He's a hypocrite.

Talking about "Avengers fatigue" when he puts his support behind trash like Genysis.

Cool story bro.
