TERMINATOR SALVATION Director Shares His Disappointment With The Movie And Teases An Unseen Alternate Ending

Terminator Salvation was meant to serve as a post-apocalyptic reboot of the long-running franchise, but it ultimately underwhelmed. Now, the movie's director, McG, has spoken on that and an unseen ending.

Terminator Salvation was meant to serve as a fresh start for the long-running sci-fi franchise, finally taking us to the post-apocalyptic future we'd heard so much about. While a CG Arnold Schwarzenegger made a cameo appearance, it felt relatively standalone but still struggled to resonate with moviegoers.

The hope had been to take a deep dive into John Connor's fight against Skynet in 2018, better explaining how the events of The Terminator came to be. A young Kyle Reese was also a pivotal part of the movie's plot, but issues behind the scenes did little to help, and there was no saving Salvation when all was said and done.

After opening to mostly negative reviews, the reboot later grossed $371.4 million at the worldwide box office and led to another overhaul with the equally as disappointing Terminator Genisys.

Talking to ComicBook.com (via SFFGazette.com) about his new movie Family Switch, Terminator Salvation helmer McG opened up on what he thinks went wrong with the Christian Bale/Sam Worthington-led blockbuster.

"We tried hard. On that one, we brought in Jonah Nolan to write it, there was a writers' strike back then," he recalls. "Brought in Christian Bale, you can't reach much higher than that. We certainly gave it everything we had. A lot of people like that movie, it didn't quite do what I hoped it was gonna do and I've been living with that wound a long time."

"There's a cut out there with an entirely different ending, I just can't share it with the world yet. It's beyond dark."

This isn't the first time we've heard about an alternate ending as McG previously revealed, "I think the film has started to age better. And there is a different cut: I have my own cut of that film and there's people online that talk about wanting to see that cut. I think I got a lot of things right with that."

He added, "I think I got to take the punch on that one for not quite nailing the landing on the final expression of that movie and, who knows, maybe the cut that I have of that movie hidden away is the answer. It's darker! I don't know, that's for the fans to say."

Short of it being thrown into some sort of future anniversary box set, we doubt that sequence will ever see the light of day. After a few recent misses (Terminator: Dark Fate also underwhelmed despite being a major improvement over its predecessors), the franchise has been shelved with no clear sign of what the plan is from here.

...wait, but he shared it before.

Basically the ending is where Markus is brought back after destroying the skynet base. A subroutine he didn't know about causes him to kill John Connor. So in order to preserve the future they give him John's face and treat him like the new Connor.

Unless there's another darker ending they had in mind.

@Origame -
I believe it is pretty much this. The idea was that Markus and John would bond over the film and John ends up entrusting his legacy to Markus - who not only symbolically becomes John Connor leading the resistance but also due to an underlying plot-line about propaganda that was cutdown heavily becomes the new John Connor to continue to provide hope.

It'd also have created the dynamic of Terminator Vs Terminator allowing 'John' to physically fight the Terminators in future films set in the future.

@Scarilian - Whioe it does sound cool; I don’t know that ending would be better.

The entire premise of these films is that John Connor must survive to save humanity. In this world, fate and destiny are real. They can try to fight it, but only succeed in pushing it back further. Judgement Day will come.

Having a Terminator replace John is a mind f@ck, but that means anybody can replace him. It voids the first 2 (superior) films. Can someone else lead a resistance, sure. But in this story, not without bumping.

I don't really care for director's cuts. Same here. Think the movie was fine as it is. Still the best Terminator movie after the first two

@bkmeijer1 - I thought Salvation was actually pretty cool too. It was flawed, but it was not THAT bad. The newest one was pretty good too (cant remember the name of it, but it's the one with Sarah Conner in it and the blonde female terminator hybrid character).

@Shivermetimbers - Dark Fate was the last one. It was fine, but that's mostly because it took the plot of T2. Only really new thing it brought to the table was that Sarah/Carl dynamic

@bkmeijer1 - I give it credit for being the only Terminator movie to try something different.

@philinterrupted - same here. Every other sequel after T2 just remixed the same story. Salvation actually did some solid world building imo

@bkmeijer1 - I hated everything about the film. To me, T3 is criminally underrated. I also really liked Dark Fate. After Salvation being the worst to me, I like the original second, and T3 third. T2 to me is a bit overrated. Genysis was dog poo.

@lazlodaytona - I think T3 and Dark Fate weren't that bad imo, but it just felt kinda repetitive. Agree was Genysis is dog poo

@bkmeijer1 - I understand your take. I just felt that T-3 was a more appropriately shorter length than T2. I know I'm in the minority.
The chase scene was epic (and that year Matrix 2 had the "supposedly" best chase scene). T3's was better.
and the ending just broke my heart. Plus the t-850 had killed John in the future?! Just loved it.

@lazlodaytona - it definitely had some cool moments and a solid ending. I'm probably also one of the few that liked the Terminator in that movie

While I didn’t care for the story, it had the best atmosphere/design in the series besides T2 in my opinion. I think they should have tried to improve on it with sequels rather than scrap and reboot.

Always hated the fact that aside from one or 2 very brief shots, the look of the apocalyptic world from the original 2 was abandoned in favour of boring cheap looking desert. His plan for the sequel involved taking a couple of the robots from his film like the transformer and bringing them back into the modern world which sounded like back pedalling after Salvation was suppose to move away from that and focus on the actual war. Glad he didn't get a sequel. This franchise had the same affect on me as JP3 where the newer films just made the third films age better.

Still think T3 is underrated and idk why no one sees that. It’s the one that’s most like the first 2, and the ending is bleak !

T3 is seriously good man.

Also I’ve never seen Salvation in full, only parts, but it’s better than the last 2.

1 - Classic
2 - a top ten all time for me
3 - not on the same level as the first two but I enjoy it.
4 - Nothing to rave about but there are moments and aspects I enjoy. I appreciate that they brought us to the future war instead of the same time travel stuff. Definitely felt like the franchise was moving forward.
5 & 6 - trash.

Terminator: The Sarah Commor Chronicles was the best entry in the entire franchise.

Look at the Dark Horse comics, there are so many great stories to adapt.

The one thing they didn’t get right about Terminator Salvation was them walking around during the day. That bothered the hell outta me, according to Kyle Reese, you can move around at night. John should have found Kyle much earlier and just started to show him a few things, as well as giving him a new call sign DN 38416.

It shouldn’t have been about Marcus until the next film. It should have been about John and Kyle’s relationship in the very beginning. I think Bale did a fantastic job with the role, the story wasn’t all there though.
