Can Tron be the next big movie franchise?

With Tron: Legacy reaching it's estimated domestic production cost, does the fact that the Worldwide Gross is 300 million plus secure a sequel to Tron:Legacy?

Apparently, Disney does not want to give up just yet with their revival of “TRON” even after they spent a lot of money in reviving the movie and to start a new franchise. The “TRON: Legacy” did not much ‘wowed’ the audience; however, AICN claimed that the studio is almost close in crossing the $300 million mark in worldwide box office grosses.

“TRON: Legacy” did not make much of an impact on the audience when it hit the theaters last December. The film follows the story of the son of the designer of the virtual world who went to look for his father and end up inside the digital world that was designed by his father. The son meets his father’s creation who turned bad and a unique ally who was born inside the digital world of The Grid.

It does make sense. If we try to look at it, “TRON: Legacy” introduced the audience of the new generation in a fun and unique world to play around with. This is quite similar to what George Lucas did to “Star Wars.” Disney plans to launch an animated TV show entitled, “TRON: Uprising,” which will star Elijah Wood and will be shown in 2012 in order to keep the franchise alive until the next film, which will probably arrive in 2013 or 2014.

However, the hanging question remains, can “TRON: Legacy” be the next big live-action franchise of Disney? What do they need to do in order to catch your attention and to make you a devoted fan?
