Disney+ Scrapped A TRON TV Series From 12 YEARS A SLAVE Writer John Ridley

After TRON: Legacy underperformed at the box office, the chances of a sequel have always seemed slim, but it's now been revealed that we very nearly got a continuation of the franchise on Disney+...

According to an in-depth look at the future of Disney+ from The Hollywood Reporter, the newly launched streaming service recently pulled the plug on TRON TV series from Oscar-winner John Ridley (12 Years a Slave). Specifics about what it would have entailed haven't been revealed, but it being some sort continuation of TRON: Legacy (or an expansion of this world) is likely.

Ridley has an ABC Studios deal - which is why he was producing a still unrevealed Marvel TV show once upon a time - and that's why he was working on TRON. However, despite him devoting several months to the project, it was never officially given the green light from Disney.

Muppets Live Another Day and the Disney villains-themed Book of Enchantment were also scrapped, and while a number of projects have been moved to Hulu due to their non-PG-13 nature, it sounds like TRON won't be moving forward. That doesn't mean things won't change down the line, but the studio clearly didn't feel like Ridley's take was a good match for the streaming service.

The TRON franchise remains beloved among moviegoers despite the fact that there's only actually been two movies, and Disney+ does seem like a good fit for the property whether it's a film or TV show.

It's certainly a shame this didn't happen, but considering Ridley was also responsible for the terrible Ben-Hur remake, there's a possibility fans may have actually managed to dodge a bullet here.

What do you guys think?

@JonC - PS: i could still see Tron Disney+ happening... just not right now... could be a timing issue with Olivia Wilde... but it is not like Disney+ is going anywhere... we will likely see something down the road... also for The Last Starfighter, The Black Hole, Flight of the Navigator, etc...
I could see a continued life for all these movies and much, much more.

What is it with Disney and just hating Tron? I remember how pissed people were that Tron 3 never happened before. Now this? People won't be happy.

Tron is such an interesting universe, the perfect franchise to go more experimental/artistic-driven. What a shame.

I’d much rather have this than half the shit they’ve developed for it.

I understand Disney makes the most per studio, but they really do need to diversify, because all they do these days are Marvel, Star Wars, animated movies and live action remakes of their animated movies.

So hearing a new Tron was cancelled isn't the news I want to hear, but I personally want to see Disney try their hand at making a new live action IP.

Make it a movie and I’ll be down for it

I would see a show starring Hackers in the Tron World and an assault on the digital fortress where Encom protects the information.

I just realized while reading this that I watch Disney+ the least out of all the streaming services I have.
A Tron series would have been fun.

@AnthonyVonGeek - D+ is desperate for content. I guess it'll pick up when the Marvel and Star Wars stuff is more regular. As to original content, forget it. It's all directed at kids and families.

Not that I'll ever know.

Just for the record, we're pretending people wouldn't complain about how unnecessary a Tron TV series would be right? I'd hate to be on the wrong side of this no win scenario.

Come on Disney, you have to make something, Disney+ can’t just be Star Wars, Marvel, and old episodes of Disney Channel shows. Give me something.

They keep trying to make Tron happen.

I think a series exploring the mechanics of an all-virtual environment would be cool, and Tron has a killer aesthetic. But for some reason Tron itself never held any appeal to me. The franchise just feels so weirdly dated and lore-heavy for being based on one kind of goofy 80's movie.

It's like someone doing a Last Starfighter series, except taking all the sci-fi worldbuilding stuff seriously that nobody even really remembers.

Are they still doing Earth to Ned? I'm invested in a revival of puppetry on television.
