TRON: ARES - Jodie Turner-Smith And Evan Peters Rumored To Have Joined Cast In Key Roles

Though 2010's sci-fi sequel. Tron: Legacy, didn't do particularly well at the box office, and wasn't exactly what you'd call a hit with critics, it, like the first Tron, has amassed something of a cult following over the years.

Fans had been hoping for a follow-up announcement after several false starts, and last year, we finally got word that a new film titled Tron: Ares is in the works.

The movie is reportedly being developed as a sequel to Legacy, while also serving as a soft reboot of the franchise. Joachim Rønning (Maleficent: Mistress of Evil) is on board as director, with Jared Leto (Morbius, Blade Runner 2049) set to play the lead (believed to be named Ares).

Now, we're hearing that two more cast members have been added in key roles.

According to reliable scooper Daniel Richtman (via Patreaon), Jodie Turner-Smith (The Acolyte) will play the female lead, who is named Athena. We're also hearing that Evan Peters (X-Men, American Horror Story) has been cast, but that report comes from the only semi-trustworthy Giant Freakin Robot.

A previously released - though unofficial - character breakdown described Athena as:

"Imposing, cold and officious, driven solely by an innate urge. Open to fulfill any directive she is given without question, Athena is a member of an elite special forces unit and second in command. When Athena senses her superior has strayed from their assignment, she reports him without hesitation and quickly assumes his leadership role, intent on destroying him and fulfilling the directive at all costs. With incredible power and the inability to fear or doubt, Athena is nearly an unstoppable force, and a tragic figure."

There have also been rumors that Legacy cast stars Jeff Bridges, Bruce Boxleitner, Garrett Hedlund, Cillian Murphy and Olivia Wilde might be set to reprise their respective roles, but we haven't heard anything solid in that regard.

Tron: Ares hasn't been given an official release date, but production is expected to commence later this year in Toronto.

@BlackStar25 - They did a Tron party at DCA in the evenings for a little bit. That was amazing, especially with the light/laser work, and the music of course. A whole land would be bonkers.

I sincerely hope this is about Dillinger accidentally creating another evil AI threat that goes Skynet essentially, and then ENCOM has to put together a special team to prevent the apocalypse. The team being comprised of new and old characters alike.

Easy, Entertaining, and effective.

Not confident in the director tbh, not confident in Leto tbh...but I love this franchise so, so much, and I'm really hoping that if this has to exist, it can at least be about as good and interesting as Legacy was.
